Exploring Provider-Patient Interactions With Young Children In The Dental Setting, Kelsey R. Eackles Jan 2019

Exploring Provider-Patient Interactions With Young Children In The Dental Setting, Kelsey R. Eackles

Capstones and Honors Theses

A key element that must be addressed when striving for good overall health is positive oral health practices that begin early in life (AAPD; 2013, 2014). Unfortunately, two major difficulties are commonly faced by dental providers who try to implement these positive oral health practices in young children: dental fear and behavior management problems. The current study aimed to examine how the natural interactions that occur between a dental provider and child patient may be related to child dental fear and behavior. Dental appointments for 36 children under the age of six years old were examined, and verbal and behavioral …

First Description Of Subglacial Megalineations From The Late Paleozoic Ice Age In Southern Africa, Graham D. Andrews, Andrew T. Mcgrady, Sarah R. Brown, Shannon M. Maynard Jan 2019

First Description Of Subglacial Megalineations From The Late Paleozoic Ice Age In Southern Africa, Graham D. Andrews, Andrew T. Mcgrady, Sarah R. Brown, Shannon M. Maynard

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We identify late Paleozoic ice age (LPIA) subglacial megalineations from field and geospatial imagery of the Twyfelfontein area of northern Namibia, and present the results of a geomorphometric analysis of those data. Asymmetric 0.1–1.5 km-long megawhalebacks indicate a paleo-ice flow to the northwest. We infer that an ice stream draining the LPIA Kaokoveld ice sheet existed within the proto-Huab River valley and that was comparable to ice streams in modern Antarctica. Recognition of a paleo-ice stream in northern Namibia supports interpretations of glaciogenic sedimentary successions (Itararé Group) in southern Brazil that suggest the presence of major, terrestrial glacial outlet systems …

Comparing Abundance Estimates From Closed Population Mark-Recapture Models Of Endangered Adult Atlantic Sturgeon, J E. Kahn, C Hager, J C. Watterson, N Mathies, K J. Hartman Jan 2019

Comparing Abundance Estimates From Closed Population Mark-Recapture Models Of Endangered Adult Atlantic Sturgeon, J E. Kahn, C Hager, J C. Watterson, N Mathies, K J. Hartman

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus were listed as 5 distinct population segments under the US Endangered Species Act in 2012. At that time, only 2 abundance estimates of the Atlantic sturgeon population were available: one from commercial fisheries landings in the Hudson River ending in 1995 and one from mark-recapture research in the Altamaha River, Georgia, in 2004 and 2005. In 2013, we verified spawning in the York River, Virginia, system and initiated a multiple-year mark-recapture study focusing on spawning-run abundance. We used a Schumacher-Eschmeyer model and Program CAPTURE to produce estimates of annual spawning abundances from 2013 to 2018. …

Drinking Water Quality Impacts On Health Care Expenditures In The United States, Fahad Alzahrani, Alan R. Collins, Elham Erfanian Jan 2019

Drinking Water Quality Impacts On Health Care Expenditures In The United States, Fahad Alzahrani, Alan R. Collins, Elham Erfanian

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This paper explores the relationship between episodes of contaminated drinking water and health care expenditures in the United States. The analysis relies on panel data from the 48 contiguous states from 2000 to 2011. We use the population served by public water systems that violate health-based standards of the Safe Drinking Water Act as a proxy for contaminated drinking water. We estimate spatial and non-spatial models and control for factors that may affect per capita health care expenditures including variables that reflect air quality violations along with ability to pay plus demand for and supply of health care services. The …

Multidimensional Item Response Theory And The Force And Motion Conceptual Evaluation, Jie Yang, Cabot Zabriskie, John Stewart Jan 2019

Multidimensional Item Response Theory And The Force And Motion Conceptual Evaluation, Jie Yang, Cabot Zabriskie, John Stewart

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Many studies have examined the structure and properties of the Force Concept Inventory (FCI); however, far less research has investigated the Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation (FMCE). This study applied Multidimensional Item Response Theory (MIRT) to a sample of N ¼ 4528 FMCE post-test responses. Exploratory factor analysis showed that 5, 9, and 10-factor models optimized some fit statistics. The FMCE uses extensive blocking of items into groups with a common stem; these blocks factored together in most models. A confirmatory analysis, which constrained the MIRT models to a theoretical model constructed from expert solutions, produced a model requiring only …

Neural Processing Of Communication Signals: The Extent Of Sender–Receiver Matching Varies Across Species Of Apteronotus, Kathryne M. Allen, Gary Marsat Jan 2019

Neural Processing Of Communication Signals: The Extent Of Sender–Receiver Matching Varies Across Species Of Apteronotus, Kathryne M. Allen, Gary Marsat

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

As communication signal properties change, through genetic drift or selective pressure, the sensory systems that receive these signals must also adapt to maintain sensitivity and adaptability in an array of contexts. Shedding light on this process helps us to understand how sensory codes are tailored to specific tasks. In a species of weakly electric fish, Apteronotus albifrons, we examined the unique neurophysiological properties that support the encoding of electrosensory communication signals that the animal encounters in social exchanges. We compare our findings to the known coding properties of the closely related species Apteronotus leptorhynchus to establish how these animals …

Computer-Assisted Instruction Compared To Traditional Instruction On Letter Recognition For Preschoolers With Special Needs, Jamie Nicole Harvey Jan 2019

Computer-Assisted Instruction Compared To Traditional Instruction On Letter Recognition For Preschoolers With Special Needs, Jamie Nicole Harvey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The need to reach learners with disabilities in inclusive early childhood classrooms has grown with increasing legislative mandates. An essential area of focus is in early literacy and alphabet letter recognition. One such way to bridge the gap includes computer assisted instruction as an instructional method. A concurrent treatment single case design was used to compare the rate of letter acquisition in young children with disabilities (n=6) between computer assisted instruction program, Teach Town Basics™, and traditional teaching of concepts in early childhood inclusive classrooms. Participants received each treatment in random order and data were graphed daily on …

Multidimensional Item Response Theory And The Conceptual Survey Of Electricity And Magnetism, Cabot Zabriskie, John Stewart

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper is part of the Focused Collection on Quantitative Methods in PER: A Critical Examination.] While many studies have examined the structure, validity, and reliability of the Force Concept Inventory, far less research has been performed on other conceptual instruments in widespread use in physics education research. This study performs a confirmatory analysis of the Conceptual Survey of Electricity and Magnetism (CSEM) guided by a theoretical model of expert understanding of electricity and magnetism. Multidimensional Item Response Theory (MIRT) with the discrimination matrix constrained to the theoretical model was used to investigate two large datasets (N1=2014 and N2=2657) from …

Partitioning The Gender Gap In Physics Conceptual Inventories: Force Concept Inventory, Force And Motion Conceptual Evaluation, And Conceptual Survey Of Electricity And Magnetism, Rachel Henderson, John Stewart, Adrienne Traxler Jan 2019

Partitioning The Gender Gap In Physics Conceptual Inventories: Force Concept Inventory, Force And Motion Conceptual Evaluation, And Conceptual Survey Of Electricity And Magnetism, Rachel Henderson, John Stewart, Adrienne Traxler

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Over the last decade, the “gender gap” in physics conceptual inventory scores has been extensively studied by the physics education research community. Researchers have identified many factors that influence the overall differences in post-test scores between men and women. More recently, it has been shown that the Force Concept Inventory (FCI) contains eight items that are substantially unfair; six are unfair to women, two are unfair to men. The Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation (FMCE) and the Conceptual Survey of Electricity and Magnetism (CSEM), however, contain fewer unfair items. In this work, results from prior studies are used to further …

emperatures near room temperature are critically needed for use in dissipationless quantum computation and spintronic devices. However, such materials are extremely rare. Here, a room‐temperature FMI is achieved in ultrathin La0.9Ba0.1MnO3 films grown on SrTiO3 substrates via an interface proximity effect. Detailed scanning transmission electron microscopy images clearly demonstrate that MnO6 octahedral rotations in La0.9Ba0.1MnO3 close to the interface are strongly suppressed. As determined from in situ X‐ray photoemission spectroscopy, O K‐edge X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory, the realization of the FMI state arises from a reduction of Mn eg bandwidth caused by the quenched MnO6 octahedral …

Gnss/Lidar-Based Navigation Of An Aerial Robot In Sparse Forests, Antonio C. Chiella, Henrique N. Machado, Bruno O.S. Teixeira, Guilherme A.S. Pereira Jan 2019

Gnss/Lidar-Based Navigation Of An Aerial Robot In Sparse Forests, Antonio C. Chiella, Henrique N. Machado, Bruno O.S. Teixeira, Guilherme A.S. Pereira

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Autonomous navigation of unmanned vehicles in forests is a challenging task. In such environments, due to the canopies of the trees, information from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) can be degraded or even unavailable. Also, because of the large number of obstacles, a previous detailed map of the environment is not practical. In this paper, we solve the complete navigation problem of an aerial robot in a sparse forest, where there is enough space for the flight and the GNSS signals can be sporadically detected. For localization, we propose a state estimator that merges information from GNSS, Attitude and Heading …

Evaluation Of Frother Types For Improved Flotation Recovery And Selectivity, Qingqing Huang, Xinbo Yang, Rick Q. Honaker Jan 2019

Evaluation Of Frother Types For Improved Flotation Recovery And Selectivity, Qingqing Huang, Xinbo Yang, Rick Q. Honaker

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of nine different frother types when used in a three-phase, continuously operating froth flotation system. The frothers included several that are commonly used in the industry (e.g., MIBC, 2EH, and F-1) as well as unique frother types (e.g., F-3). The tests were conducted in a 5-cm diameter laboratory flotation column that provided near plug-flow mixing conditions due to a length-to-diameter ratio of around 50:1. Test results indicate that F-1, MIBC, and MPC (in order of decreasing effectiveness) provided the weakest performance in terms of combustible recovery while F-2, MAC, …

Automated Polarization-Dependent Multidimensional Coherent Spectroscopy Phased Using Transient Absorption, J. K. Wahlstrand, G. M. Wernsing, J. Paul, A. D. Bristow

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

: An experimental apparatus is described for multidimensional optical spectroscopy with fully automated polarization control, based on liquid crystal variable retarders. Polarization dependence of rephasing two-dimensional coherent spectra are measured in a single scan, with absolute phasing performed for all polarization configurations through a single automated auxiliary measurement at the beginning of the scan. A factor of three improvement in acquisition time is demonstrated, compared to the apparatus without automated polarization control. Results are presented for a GaAs quantum well sample and an InGaAs quantum well embedded in a microcavity

This paper describes a model of electron energization and cyclotron-maser emission applicable to astrophysical magnetized collisionless shocks. It is motivated by the work of Begelman, Ergun and Rees [Astrophys. J. 625, 51 (2005)] who argued that the cyclotron-maser instability occurs in localized magnetized collisionless shocks such as those expected in blazar jets. We report on recent research carried out to investigate electron acceleration at collisionless shocks and maser radiation associated with the accelerated electrons. We describe how electrons accelerated by lower-hybrid waves at collisionless shocks generate cyclotron-maser radiation when the accelerated electrons move into regions of stronger magnetic fields. The …

Moss, Carol E. Smith

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Heart failure (HF) afflicts 6.5 million Americans with devastating consequences to patients and their family caregivers. Families are rarely prepared for worsening HF and are not informed about end-of-life and palliative care (EOLPC) conservative comfort options especially during the end stage. West Virginia (WV) has the highest rate of HF deaths in the U.S. where 14% of the population over 65 years have HF. Thus, there is a need to investigate a new family EOLPC intervention (FamPALcare), where nurses coach family-managed advanced HF care at home.

Methods

This study uses a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design stratified by gender …

Water‐Borne And Plasma Corticosterone Are Not Correlated In Spotted Salamanders, Alice R. Millikin, Sarah K. Woodley, Drew R. Davis, Ignacio T. Moore, James T. Anderson

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Water‐borne hormone measurement is a noninvasive method suitable for amphibians of all sizes that are otherwise difficult to sample. For this method, containment‐water is assayed for hormones released by the animal. Originally developed in fish, the method has expanded to amphibians, but requires additional species‐specific validations. We wanted to determine physiological relevance of water‐borne corticosterone in spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) by comparing concentrations to those taken using established corticosterone sampling methods, such as plasma. Using a mixture of field and laboratory studies, we compared water‐borne corticosterone levels to other traditional methods of sampling corticosterone for spotted salamander larvae, …

The Phonetics And Phonology Of Lenition: A Campidanese Sardinian Case Study, Jonah Katz, Gianmarco Pitzanti Jan 2019

The Phonetics And Phonology Of Lenition: A Campidanese Sardinian Case Study, Jonah Katz, Gianmarco Pitzanti

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper gives a detailed description of the consonant system of Campidanese Sardinian and makes methodological and theoretical contributions to the study of lenition. The data are drawn from a corpus of field recordings, including roughly 400 utterances produced by 15 speakers from the Trexenta and Western Campidanese areas. Campidanese has a complex lenition system that interacts with length, voicing, and manner contrasts. We show that the semi-automated lenition analysis presented in this journal by Ennever, Meakins, and Round can be fruitfully extended to our corpus, despite its much more heterogeneous set of materials in a genetically distant language. Intensity …

Description Of Motor Control Using Inverse Models, Anton Sobinov Jan 2019

Description Of Motor Control Using Inverse Models, Anton Sobinov

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Humans can perform complicated movements like writing or running without giving them much thought. The scientific understanding of principles guiding the generation of these movements is incomplete. How the nervous system ensures stability or compensates for injury and constraints – are among the unanswered questions today. Furthermore, only through movement can a human impose their will and interact with the world around them. Damage to a part of the motor control system can lower a person’s quality of life. Understanding how the central nervous system (CNS) forms control signals and executes them helps with the construction of devices and rehabilitation …

Higher scores indicate more healthful vending options and supports for choosing healthfully. Nutrition Environment Measures Survey-Vending (NEMS-V) was used to validate the nutrient-density score for a …

The Unique Badness Of Hypocritical Blame, Kyle G. Fritz, Daniel J. Miller Jan 2019

The Unique Badness Of Hypocritical Blame, Kyle G. Fritz, Daniel J. Miller

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

It is widely agreed that hypocrisy can undermine one’s moral standing to blame. According to the Nonhypocrisy Condition on standing, R has the standing to blame some other agent S for a violation of some norm N only if R is not hypocritical with respect to blame for violations of N. Yet this condition is seldom argued for. Macalester Bell points out that the fact that hypocrisy is a moral fault does not yet explain why hypocritical blame is standingless blame. She raises a challenge: one must explain what is distinct about hypocritical blame such that the hypocritical blamer lacks …

Supporting The Injured Athlete: Coaches’ Perspectives On Providing Social Support, Stefanee Opal Maurice Jan 2019

Supporting The Injured Athlete: Coaches’ Perspectives On Providing Social Support, Stefanee Opal Maurice

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Injury is an inevitable facet of sport participation, and injured athletes require support from coaches. However, research on injured athletes highlights a lack of support from coaches. Building on the conceptual model proposed by Maurice et al., this study uses the International Sport Coaching Framework (ISCF) to examine ways contextual coaching knowledge is used to support athletes throughout rehabilitation. Previous research has focused on the knowledge types but has neither addressed the integration of the knowledges in a single study nor examined them in an injury context. A generic qualitative approach was used to examine 13 NCAA DI coaches’ perception …

Security Bug Report Classification Using Feature Selection, Clustering, And Deep Learning, Tanner D. Gantzer Jan 2019

Security Bug Report Classification Using Feature Selection, Clustering, And Deep Learning, Tanner D. Gantzer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As the numbers of software vulnerabilities and cybersecurity threats increase, it is becoming more difficult and time consuming to classify bug reports manually. This thesis is focused on exploring techniques that have potential to improve the performance of automated classification of software bug reports as security or non-security related. Using supervised learning, feature selection was used to engineer new feature vectors to be used in machine learning. Feature selection changes the vocabulary used by selecting words with the greatest impact on classification. Feature selection was able to increase the F-Score across the datasets by increasing the precision. We also explored …

Health Literacy And Family Factors In The Transition To Adult Care In Adolescents With Type I Diabetes, Ellen M. Manegold Jan 2019

Health Literacy And Family Factors In The Transition To Adult Care In Adolescents With Type I Diabetes, Ellen M. Manegold

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Successful management of type 1 diabetes (T1DM) in adolescence involves multiple daily tasks, developmental changes, and the expectation of transition to an adult provider. Health literacy is one variable to consider in the context of transition, as studies have demonstrated the correlation of parental health literacy with health behaviors and outcomes, yet not studied adolescent health literacy in T1DM. Family factors (e.g., management responsibility, diabetes-specific family conflict, parental support) also are important to behavior and health outcomes in adolescents with T1DM. Study aims were to: 1) examine the association of adolescent health literacy to transition readiness and health outcome in …

Trustworthiness And Stability In Same And Different Sex Relationships: Heterosexuals’ Attitudes Toward Bisexuality, Jeneice Shaw Jan 2019

Trustworthiness And Stability In Same And Different Sex Relationships: Heterosexuals’ Attitudes Toward Bisexuality, Jeneice Shaw

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although bisexuals are reportedly the largest sexual orientation minority group in North America (Copen, Chandra, & Febo-Vazquez, 2016), there is scant research examining the population without also including lesbian women and gay men. However, according to the American Psychological Association’s (2012) Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Clients, psychologists should endeavor to understand the unique experiences of the bisexual population. Bisexual individuals face different stereotypes, conflict within the LGB community, and different life experiences related to other sexual orientations (Rust, 2000). Two unique stereotypes applied to the bisexual community are that bisexuality is an unstable sexual orientation …

Time-Dependent Deformation And Associated Failure Of Roof In Underground Mines, Yuting Xue Jan 2019

Time-Dependent Deformation And Associated Failure Of Roof In Underground Mines, Yuting Xue

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In underground coal mines, roof falls are a major contributor to injuries and fatalities. Studies have related the occurrence of roof fall to weak immediate roof, high horizontal stress, entry orientation, etc. An often-neglected factor in studies on this topic has been the influence of time-dependent behavior of the roof rock on roof falls. The time-dependent roof failure activity involves both intact and failed rocks. Numerical simulation techniques are available that include time-dependent behavior; however, they lack constitutive models that consider both the intact and the failed behavior of rock. In addition, input properties for the creep models only include …

Measuring The Effects Of Interpretive Journalism On Trust And Credibility Perceptions In The Context Of Political News Coverage, Scott William Siker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examines the effects of interpretive journalism on trust and credibility perceptions. Specifically, this study investigates interpretive journalism in the context of political news coverage and also examines the relationship between political ideology and the aforementioned variables. This study uses a 2 (interpretive journalism; fact-based journalism) x 2 (political ideology: conservative leaning; liberal leaning) between-subjects online experiment to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings illustrate the predictive value of credibility to trust within the context of political news coverage. Additionally, this study shows that individuals exhibit higher perceptions of trust and credibility towards fact-based political coverage as opposed to interpretive …

Chemical Analysis Of Firearm Discharge Residues Using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, Courtney Helen Vander Pyl Jan 2019

Chemical Analysis Of Firearm Discharge Residues Using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, Courtney Helen Vander Pyl

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

According to the Gun Violence Archive, in 2017, firearms were involved in 57,134 criminal incidents in the United States. The detection of firearm discharge residues (FDR), including inorganic and organic gunshot residues, can provide essential information in such investigations. For instance, when the question of suicide or murder arises, estimating the barrel to victim distance plays a critical role in the outcome of the case. In addition, clothing, wounds and other target materials are often inspected to determine if a bullet has produced an entry or exit orifice. Currently, the most common method for distance determination and identification of bullet …
