Assessment Of Social Anxiety In Early Childhood: Initial Test Construction And *Validation., Daniel B. Chorney
Assessment Of Social Anxiety In Early Childhood: Initial Test Construction And *Validation., Daniel B. Chorney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Social anxiety is experienced across the lifespan, with many individuals reporting symptoms of anxiety and shyness from a very early age in childhood. A number of measures have been designed to assess social anxiety in children, adolescents, and adults, yet little attention has been focused on children below 8 years of age. While some debate exists concerning children's ability to reliably report symptoms of anxiety in early childhood, recent research has indicated that accurate data can be obtained if the measures utilized are developmentally sensitive and not simply downward extensions of measures used to examine social anxiety in adults. Obtaining …

Functional Characterization Of Pag1, The Α7 Subunit Of The 20s Proteasome And Of The Ubiquitin-Specific Protease Subfamilies Ubp12/13 And Ubp3/4 In Arabidopsis Thaliana., Gulsum Soyler-Ogretim
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The ubiquitin/26S proteasome system (UPS) is conserved in all eukaryotic species. The 26S proteasome serves as the protease in this pathway and is responsible for the degradation of abnormal and short-lived proteins after their modification with a polyubiquitin tag. It consists of one or two ATP-dependent, 19S regulatory particles and an ATP-independent 20S core protease. PAG1 serves as one of at least 14 different subunits of the 20S core protease. In this study, the role of the 20S core protease in general and PAG1, the α7 subunit of the 26S proteasome, in particular during Arabidopsis growth and development was investigated …

Evaluation Of Weaning Regimen And Seminal Plasma Biology On Reproductive Management In Cattle, John Fredrick Odhiambo
Evaluation Of Weaning Regimen And Seminal Plasma Biology On Reproductive Management In Cattle, John Fredrick Odhiambo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of any reproductive management system in cattle is to ensure that cows breed at the earliest opportune time and maintain their pregnancy to term. However, delayed resumption of postpartum ovarian cyclic activity in primiparous beef cows and pregnancy losses in dairy cows continue to impede progress in obtaining sound reproductive efficiency in these species. Three studies were designed to test the following hypotheses: (1) Does removal of lactational stress in beef cows by early weaning of calves improve cow energy profile and postpartum reproductive performance? (2) Does artificial insemination (AI) with adjunctive seminal plasma (SP) or transforming growth …

An Examination Of Liability, Duty, And Disclaimers For The Pleasure Horse Industry In West Virginia And Other States, Jennifer L. Poling
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In an effort to protect equine professionals, horse owners, and equestrian participants from liability associated with injury, 45 of 50 states have enacted Equine Activity Statutes. Many of these statutes vary widely with regard to the individuals and types of activities that are afforded protection. Under most state laws there are many requirements for horse owners and equine professionals regarding disclosure of dangerous behaviors in the horse, past medical problems, soundness issues, and other types of risks to potential buyers and handlers. Facility operators and owners are also required to make reasonable efforts to repair dangerous equipment and/or warn visitors …

Ecology Of A Central Appalachian White-Tailed Deer Herd At Low Density, Shawn M. Crimmins
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are the most abundant big game species in North America and serve as the dominant herbivore in the majority of the Appalachian region. Despite the abundance of research conducted on this species, relatively little is known of the ecology of white-tailed deer occurring at low densities. Our study population experienced a 75% decline in population density and a three-fold increase in habitat disturbance via timber harvests between 2002 and 2005. From May 2006 to April 2008 I examined the home-range, survival, and herbivory patterns of a central Appalachian white-tailed deer herd that has recently experienced both …

Development And Evaluation Of A Minimally Invasive Sampling Technique To Estimate The Age Of Living Birds, Crissa K. Cooey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using pest species in initial studies of pentosidine (Ps) aging research for birds may be the catalyst to discovering more effective population control strategies for pest, invasive, and hard to manage birds. Pentosidine is an irreversible, stable, fluorescent, collagen cross-link, created through the Maillard reaction, which has been found to accumulate throughout the lifetime of an organism in various body parts such as skin, lens crystalline, and dura matter. Pentosidine assays are more accurate at determining the age of adult birds in comparison to plumage coloration, eye and mouth color, feather wear, and molt sequences due to the discovery that …

Caveolin-1 Recruitment To The Trailing Edge Of Motile Cells Results In Focal Adhesion Disassembly And Nascent Interaction With Actin Stress Fibers, Andrew Beardsley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The protein caveolin-1 has been shown to positively affect angiogenesis and vascular remodeling in vivo via studies using knockout mice. In fact, defects in these two processes are among the major hallmarks of an otherwise benign caveolin-null phenotype. Current dogma on the function of caveolin-1 does not predict or account for these deficits. The overall objective of the following studies was to uncover the role of caveolin-1 in angiogenesis and vascular remodeling through study of the protein in cell-substratum remodeling during cell motility in vitro.;In the first study, caveolin-1 and its parent organelle, caveolae, conspicuously polarize to the rear of …

Effect Of Dietary Lysine And Genetics On Indices Of Energy And Protein Metabolism In Rainbow Trout And Alterations In The Mitochondrial Proteome In Broilers Fed A Lysine-Deficient Diet, Stephanie K. Pomeroy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
How an organism reacts to consuming a lysine deficient diet was examined in two different circumstances. First, the responses of ten different genetic lines of rainbow trout were observed while consuming a lysine-deficient (LD) diet, used to mimic a soybean meal-containing diet. The aquaculture industry is investigating the incorporation of soybean meal into carnivorous fish diets to alleviate the need for fishmeal. If soybean meal is incorporated into the diet, an assessment of the genetic strains of fish used in the aquaculture industry today must be performed since differences in genetics have been shown to effect growth. When compared to …

Results suggest that HR facilitates faster acquisition of skills as well as better performance on cumulative reviews, distraction, and retention tests. …
Communicative Functions Of Young Children's Visual Art, Clover Simms Wright
Communicative Functions Of Young Children's Visual Art, Clover Simms Wright
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
How can young children use visual art to communicate? This study used Halliday's communicative functions of language (Halliday, 1973), to frame the answer to this question; Halliday's categories of communicative functions are: instrumental, regulatory, interactional, personal, heuristic, imaginative, and representational/informative. Five children, between the ages of three and five, were observed and interviewed as they voluntarily created visual art over a six-week period. In that time period, each of the seven functions of language was demonstrated collectively by the participants. The research was conducted by an educator employed in the early childhood setting. Qualitatively, this study confirmed that young children …

The Use Of Chickens To Remove The Infective Stage Of Haemonchus Contortus From The Field After Sheep Have Grazed, Jessica Harley Nicole Eddy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There are few USDA organic certified practices for controlling the nematode Haemonchus contortus. This small ruminant parasite has a life cycle that makes it a candidate for control using field rotations. The third-stage of the nematode's life cycle is responsible for infecting or re-infecting a host and the use of chickens to control H. contortus has not been tested. This experiment was conducted to determine if the chicken's foraging behavior reduces the number of infective third-stage larvae on the pasture by comparing a chicken sub-plot, a sub-plot that was mowed, a control sub-plot and a pretreatment. These forage removal methods …
Hemodynamics Of Intracranial Aneurysms: Factors That May Influence Occurrence, Francisco Adolfo Pino Romainville
Hemodynamics Of Intracranial Aneurysms: Factors That May Influence Occurrence, Francisco Adolfo Pino Romainville
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The formation and growth of intracranial aneurysms are partly attributed to various hemodynamic factors, such as the wall shear stress and pressure. However, the exact nature of the hemodynamic variables responsible for triggering aneurismal growth is still unknown. The conclusions drawn by various studies in this regard are found to be speculative and sometimes ambiguous. This issue is further investigated in the present work using some new insight gained from passive scalar dispersion in the blood flow for realistic aneurysm geometries. Intracranial aneurysms are best visualized using selective catheter angiogram technique where a contrast agent added to the blood flow …

The Effects Of Fuel Additives On Diesel Engine Emissions During Steady State And Transient Operation, John P. Nuszkowski
The Effects Of Fuel Additives On Diesel Engine Emissions During Steady State And Transient Operation, John P. Nuszkowski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Internal combustion engines have propelled society's transportation and power needs for the last century. However, with the regulatory demand to reduce air pollution, internal combustion engines are a major focus to reduce the emissions from these engines. Compression ignition or diesel engines are a major contributor to NOx and PM pollution. However, the life of these engines is much longer than that of their spark-ignited counterparts, causing the fleet of diesel engines to consist of a significant number of old, higher polluting engines. Fuel additives are one method of reducing emissions and/or enhancing performance in these older diesel engines without …

Organic Methods To Control Root Rot Of Peas And Spinach In North-Central West Virginia, Hannah Witten Schrum
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Root rot disease is a limiting factor in organic production of cool season crops for many growers in North central West Virginia. In attempt to control root rot and its devastating impact on crop stands we decided to study a number of environmental, cultural, and biological control methods. The purpose of this work was to study the effect of alterations of the seed environment on disease incidence (measured by crop emergence and survival 21 days after planting) and thereby define techniques which are suitable for small growers to adopt if they have root rot problems. We therefore explored four broadly …

Freshwater mussels are in decline, particularly in the Appalachian region of North America. This region contains the world's greatest diversity of freshwater mussels, but many species are now threatened or endangered. Little is known of the basic ecology and distributions of species of freshwater mussels relative to other freshwater organisms. The goal of this study was to use predictive modeling to predict distributions of freshwater mussels in the Appalachians and identify correlated factors using a watershed framework. Models were developed in the upper Mid-Atlantic and Ohio drainage regions using subwatersheds and separately in the Tennessee region using catchments. Models developed …
Association Of Changes In Norepinephrine And Serotonin Transporter Expression With The Long-Term Behavioral Effects Of Antidepressant Drugs, Zaorui Zhao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The relationship between the ability of repeated antidepressant treatment to cause down-regulation of the norepinephrine and serotonin transporters (NET, SERT) and produce antidepressant-like effects on behavior was determined. Treatment of rats with 15 mg/kg/day desipramine reduced NET expression, measured by 3H-nisoxetine binding and SDS-PAGE/immunoblotting, in cerebral cortex and hippocampus and reduced the time of immobility in the forced-swim test. The antidepressant-like effect on forced-swim behavior was evident two days following discontinuation of desipramine treatment when plasma and brain levels of desipramine and its major metabolite desmethyldesipramine were not detectable. Reduced NET expression resulted in decreased norepinephrine (NE) uptake, measured in …
Mechanical Characterization Of Fabrics For Inflatable Structures, Juan Cruz Molina Pombo
Mechanical Characterization Of Fabrics For Inflatable Structures, Juan Cruz Molina Pombo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Several mechanical properties of fabrics for inflatable structures have been characterized. In this work, the characterization was done for fabrics in a tunnel plug. As a plug the structure should seal the tunnel and maintain itself static, for that reason the characterization of the frictional system tunnel wall/structure fabric is done. Also, by the study of the maximum stresses under this configuration, the tensile strength of the structural fabrics is studied. In order to characterize the fabric properties, friction and strength, a test for each of them was done.;The tensile strength test was performed for two fabrics, according to the …

Development Of Volunteer-Driven Indices Of Biological Integrity For Wetlands In West Virginia, Walter Emil Veselka Iv
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Wetland indices of biological integrity (IBIs) are used to satisfy the water resources monitoring requirements of the Clean Water Act (CWA). However, debate still exists on what classification systems and taxa to base these IBIs upon. Our cumulative research, representing indices of biological integrity designed for regional HGM subclasses, designated HGM management classes and Cowardin et al. (1979) classes for West Virginia. The indices were derived from metrics calculated from anuran, avian, macroinvertebrate, and vegetation communities; each representing increasing levels of resources associated with gathering the necessary data. For example, avian and anuran data used to derive floodplain wetland IBI …

The Growth Of Nonprofit Accounting And It's Impact On Human Services, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Changes in nonprofit accounting standards and practices have spearheaded a quiet revolution in financial management practice in social agencies and the delivery of human services during the past three decades. These changes have gone hand-in-glove with other changes in the political arena to dramatically transform the ways in which human services are organized and delivered. At the core of this transition has been the movement from fund to enterprise accounting, together with such larger political developments as the expansion of grant-based relations with government into the performance management environment of purchase of service contracting.
