Tobacco companies spend the overwhelming majority of their annual marketing budget at the point of sale (POS), an area in which they have enjoyed the greatest freedom from regulation. The POS refers to any location where tobacco products are advertised, displayed, and purchased. The POS encompasses not only the final point of purchase (i.e., the register) but also indoor and outdoor advertising at retail locations, product placement, and price.Tobacco companies use the retail environment to attract and maintain customers by promoting their brands, increasing the likelihood of impulse product purchases, and establishing the presence of tobacco products in everyday life …

Social Ecological Constraints To Park Use In Communities With Proximate Park Access, J. Aaron Hipp, Deepti Adlakha, Ravikumar Chockalingam

Brown School Faculty Publications

Evidence correlates physical activity, psychological restoration, and social health to proximity to parks and sites of recreation. The purpose of this study was to identify perceived constraints to park use in low-income communities facing significant health disparities, but with proximate access to underutilized parks. The authors used a series of focus groups with families, teens, and older adults in neighborhoods with similar demographic distribution and parks over 125 acres in size. Constraints to park use varied across age groups as well as across social ecological levels, with perceived constraints to individuals, user groups, communities, and society. Policies and interventions aimed …

Seed For Oklahoma Kids: Experimental Test Of A Policy Innovation In A Full Population, Lisa Reyes Mason, Yunju Nam, Margaret Clancy, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

The Center for Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis has implemented an ambitious policy demonstration: SEED for Oklahoma Kids (SEED OK). This initiative uses multiple research methods, including a scientific experiment in a full population, to test a policy innovation. The innovation is providing a Child Development Account (CDA) to all children at birth. In SEED OK, randomly selected newborn children in Oklahoma received a college savings account “seeded” with a $1,000 initial deposit, plus additional components of the SEED OK intervention. This case study describes the multiyear process of designing and implementing SEED OK and sheds light …

The Impact Of Asset Ownership On Future Orientation Of Youth And Their Parents: Evidence From The Youthsave Ghana Experiment, Gina A. N. Chowa, Rainier D. Masa Sep 2013

The Impact Of Asset Ownership On Future Orientation Of Youth And Their Parents: Evidence From The Youthsave Ghana Experiment, Gina A. N. Chowa, Rainier D. Masa

Center for Social Development Research

Future orientation influences a variety of desirable behaviors, but few researchers have studied the impact of economic resources on future orientation. In this study, we investigate whether and how asset ownership influences future orientation of Ghanaian youth and their parents. Results of propensity score models suggest that asset ownership has a positive effect on future orientation of youth and their parents. Ownership of household possessions, including televisions and modes of transportation, contributes to higher levels of future orientation among youth and parents, but livestock ownership has a negative effect on future orientation. Asset ownership provides individuals and households with a …

How Do Student And School Characteristics Influence Youth Academic Performance In Ghana? A Hierarchical Linear Modeling Of Baseline Data From The Youthsave Ghana Experiment, Gina A. N. Chowa, Rainier D. Masa, Yalitza Ramos, David Ansong

Center for Social Development Research

Student and school characteristics are associated with academic performance of high school students. However, few attempts have been made to examine the simultaneous influence of student and school factors on academic performance of youth in sub-Saharan Africa. Using hierarchical linear modeling, we examine student- and school- level predictors of academic performance of Ghanaian junior high school students. As other researchers have found, we note that age and gender are significant predictors of academic performance. Student traits, including academic self-efficacy and commitment to school, are positively associated with math and English scores. Class size and presence of a toilet facility are …

Parental Involvement's Effects On Academic Performance: Evidence From The Youthsave Ghana Experiment, Gina A. N. Chowa, Rainier D. Masa, Jenna Tucker

Center for Social Development Research

Research in developed countries suggests that parental involvement is associated with youth academic success, but little is known about this relationship in developing countries. Further, it is unclear which type of parental involvement may impact the academic performance of youth from developing countries. This study examines whether (a) parental involvement at home and in school are meaningfully different constructs in a population of Ghanaian youth and their parents and (b) parental involvement predicts academic performance. Results suggest that parental involvement is a bidimensional construct consists of home and school involvement. The effect of parental involvement on youth academic performance appears …

An Exploration Of The Lives Of Young, African American Women With Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Sarah Bollinger Sep 2013

An Exploration Of The Lives Of Young, African American Women With Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Sarah Bollinger

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Compared to other subtypes of breast cancer, triple-negative breast cancer: TNBC) accounts for a disproportionate number of metastatic cases and cancer deaths. Glaring disparities are present in the occurrence of TNBC, such that those diagnosed are more likely to be African American: prevalence of 26% vs. 16% in non-African Americans) and premenopausal: 24% vs. 15% postmenopausal). A critical factor to consider regarding the disparities associated with TNBC is the evidence documenting the link between psychosocial stress over the life course and the occurrence of large, aggressive tumors that are characteristic of this subtype. Because issues such as crime, isolation, stress, …

An Examination On Un-Retirement: Retirees Returning To Work, Guillermo Ernest Gonzales Aug 2013

An Examination On Un-Retirement: Retirees Returning To Work, Guillermo Ernest Gonzales

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Research that examines retirees returning to work--defined here as un-retirement--is important, given increases in life expectancy and retirement insecurity. Unfortunately research in this area is nascent, limited in scope, and riddled with mixed findings. The current study is guided by three research questions:: 1) how do economic resources, as well as human and social capital, relate to un-retirement?;: 2) how do other productive activities, including formal and informal volunteering and caregiving, relate to un-retirement?; and: 3) how does the retirement experience, including reasons to retire and retirement satisfaction, relate to un-retirement? The empirical literature on wealth and its association with …

Barriers To Depression Treatment Among Low-Income, Latino Emergency Department Patients, Anjanette A. Wells, Isabel T. Lagomasino M.D., Lawrence A. Palinkas, Jennifer Green, Diana Gonzalez Msw

Brown School Faculty Publications

Objectives. Low-income and Latinos use the emergency department (ED) as a primary source of care. Also, the depression prevalence in ED patients is high, making the ED a compelling venue for depression screening and intervention. This study examined barriers and facilitators to depression treatment among low-income, predominantly Latino ED patients. Methods. We conducted telephone interviews with 24 ED patients (18-62 years of age, 79% female) who dropped out of a depression treatment intervention. Using grounded theory, we analyzed perceptions of depression and treatment, and barriers and facilitators to mental health treatment. Results. Although most patients acknowledged signs of depression, there …

Seasonal Water Insecurity In Urban Philippines: Examining The Role Of Gender, Resources, And Context, Lisa Reyes Mason

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Seasonal water insecurity is a complex problem of growing concern in many urban areas, due in part to urbanization, population growth, and environmental change. Using multiple research methods, this study documents the extent and nature of seasonal water insecurity among and within households in an urban neighborhood in Baguio City, the Philippines. This study also examines how individual and household factors--gender and financial, physical, and social resources--and contextual factors may relate to water insecurity by season. Data collection methods include archival research, informal interviews, randomly-sampled household surveys: N=396), randomly-sampled individual subsurveys: N=291), and in-depth interviews: N=18).

Perceived Impact Of Individual Development Account Participation Among Native Hawaiians, David W. Rothwell, Rashida Bhaiji, Anne Blumenthal May 2013

Perceived Impact Of Individual Development Account Participation Among Native Hawaiians, David W. Rothwell, Rashida Bhaiji, Anne Blumenthal

Center for Social Development Research

Indigenous peoples face many social development challenges and the lingering effects of colonization. Income transfer, a traditional social welfare approach designed to raise minimum living standards, has had limited beneficial effects on long-term social conditions. As a complement to income transfer, asset-based approaches to social welfare have resulted in positive effects in the short and long terms. Some Indigenous communities are exploring how asset-based interventions might enhance social development (Hicks, Edwards, Dennis, & Finsel, 2005), but only limited and scattered research describes how they experience asset-building programs. This qualitative descriptive study explores the perceived impact of a large Individual Development …

The Long-Term Costs Of Caring: How Caring For An Aging Parent Impacts Wealth Trajectories Of Caregivers, Jennifer Crane Greenfield Apr 2013

The Long-Term Costs Of Caring: How Caring For An Aging Parent Impacts Wealth Trajectories Of Caregivers, Jennifer Crane Greenfield

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Long-term care in the U.S. is a growing concern as our aging population exerts pressure on formal and informal care systems. Public expenditures on formal care are increasing rapidly, even as reliance on informal caregivers expands. Recent policy innovations are shifting Medicaid and Medicare funding toward home- and community-based services: HCBS) as an alternative to nursing home care. This may help reduce overall LTC care costs to states and the federal government, but it also shifts more responsibility to families and informal care networks. Not only can caregiving have negative impacts on the physical and mental health of caregivers, but …

Child Maltreatment Prevention And Health Promotion: Examining The Effectiveness Of A Nurse Home-Visiting Program, Paul Lanier Apr 2013

Child Maltreatment Prevention And Health Promotion: Examining The Effectiveness Of A Nurse Home-Visiting Program, Paul Lanier

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Problem: Child abuse and neglect is a devastating, yet preventable, social problem. Early childhood home visiting services are currently considered the most promising approach to maltreatment prevention. Expansion of evidence-based home visiting services authorized by the Affordable Care Act has created a need to better understand the utilization and effectiveness of preventive services delivered in the community. Nurses for Newborns is a nurse home visiting program serving high-risk caregivers and medically-fragile newborns using a flexible, client-driven service model.

Methods: This study used longitudinal services data linked with administrative child welfare data. A sample of low-income families: n = 3,620) who …

Mental Health Service Utilization Among African American Emerging Adults, Sha-Lai Williams Apr 2013

Mental Health Service Utilization Among African American Emerging Adults, Sha-Lai Williams

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Mental illness affects 25-30% of US adults ages 18 years and older in a given year. Of those individuals, about 41% fail to utilize mental health services. Research indicates that being African American and between the ages of 18 and 29 are associated with decreased rates of service utilization. Yet, less is known about the factors related to mental health service utilization among a specific subset of these groups, namely, African American emerging adults. Using empirically-tested theoretical frameworks as its foundation, this dissertation study aimed to address this gap in literature by examining specific predisposing, enabling, and need factors: e.g., …
