Capturing The Investigators’ Perspective Of Stranger Rapists And The Investigation, Diane M. Crowley
Capturing The Investigators’ Perspective Of Stranger Rapists And The Investigation, Diane M. Crowley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Stranger rape investigations are complex and present the challenge of identifying the unknown suspect. Criminal profiling is an investigative tool used in these difficult-to-solve cases, but there is a lack of knowledge on how detectives use profiling during their investigations and whether they are able to apply criminal profiling research in practice. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to gain a deeper understanding of the stranger rape investigative process from the perspective of experienced sex crime detectives. The conceptual framework for this study was the assumption of homology, modified from Owens, and behavior consistency originating from trait theorists. …

Organizational Support For Critical Incident Wellness And Crime Scene Investigators’ Perceived Effectiveness, Leggie Boone
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Law enforcement agencies are frequently studied for officer wellness, yet research is limited in the influence of organizational support for the psychological wellness of crime scene investigators exposed to tragic scenes. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the perceptions of job performance effectiveness of crime scene investigators based on organizational support through the provision of stress management resources. The theoretical framework of organizational support theory and management theory formed the basis of the investigation into the contributing elements of job performance. Data were collected through surveys from 92 crime scene investigators, of whom 77 were civilians and …
Administrators' Experiences Implementing Veterans Housing Units In U.S. Correctional Institutions, Lori J. Riedel
Administrators' Experiences Implementing Veterans Housing Units In U.S. Correctional Institutions, Lori J. Riedel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a higher rate of recidivism for U.S. veterans compared to the general population of offenders. To address the unique needs of veterans, separate housing units for veterans (VSUs) are now operating within correctional facilities in 29 U.S. states. Despite reports that VSUs are having a positive impact on recidivism, little is known of the experiences of correctional administrators who have implemented a VSU. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of several individuals who have implemented a VSU in their correctional facility. Guided by the quality implementation framework (QIF), data collected through …
Influence Of Collectivistic And Individualistic Values On Probation Officers' Retention, Audrene Janell Ellis
Influence Of Collectivistic And Individualistic Values On Probation Officers' Retention, Audrene Janell Ellis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Probation officers are departing their employment before retirement at a high rate depending on the agency, location, and type of position, which impacts society. The cost associated with training a new officer could consume a large portion of an agency's yearly budget, leaving many inexperienced officers to supervise dangerous offenders and defendants. Thus, it is important to examine factors influencing retention such as whether individualistic and collectivist values predict a relationship between retention intent of probation officers. The purpose of this quantitative research study, guided by Hofstede's cultural theory, was to determine whether family embeddedness influences retention intent of probation …
Precursors To Human Trafficking, Aleta J. Eldridge
Precursors To Human Trafficking, Aleta J. Eldridge
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe problem addressed in this phenomenological study was the lack of documentation of the supported lived experiences of the precursors that children exhibit prior to being groomed by a sex trafficker into human sex trafficking. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of adults, whom as a child, were groomed into sex trafficking due to being bullied, experienced familial abuse and had used illegal drugs, concurrent. Using Ostrom's institutional analysis theory (IAT) and Shaw and McKay's social disorganization theory (SDT), this study examined the three precursors of human trafficking that occurred, concurrently, prior and during the …

Sexually-Abused Adolescent Females Versus Nonsexually-Abused Adolescent Females Regarding Rorschach Inkblot Assessments, Angela D. Jones
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study explored differences between female adolescents who experienced sexual abuse as children and those who experienced other forms of trauma or abuse. There is no previous research assessing the differences between these two groups. Some female adolescent victims of sexual abuse are sexually revictimized, sex trafficked, and exhibit delinquent behaviors. If differences are determined, a more tailored and appropriate intervention could be introduced to reduce these youths' revictimization and minimize adult sexual risk. This study was quantitative in nature and assessed the clinical profiles of 27 female adolescents involved in the juvenile justice system for being sex trafficked or …

Gay-Affirmative Social Work Practice With Homeless Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Youth, Aissa Deloatch-Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth are overrepresented in the homeless population and experience higher rates of discrimination and unfair treatment when accessing services and shelter. Research indicates that homeless LGBT youth remain homeless for longer periods of time than their heterosexual peers because of bias and stigmas associated with their gender identity and sexual orientation. The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine if social workers in the city of New Haven, Connecticut, used an affirmative model of intervention when working with homeless LGBT youth. Maslow’s self-affirmation theory served as the conceptual framework for this study. The interview …

Data was collected by face-to-face interviews. Through the participants’ shared experiences and reviewing the interview transcripts, several themes emerged regarding their perceptions of …
Key Inhibitors To Ex-Offenders Obtaining Permanent Housing, Jennifer Bernard
Key Inhibitors To Ex-Offenders Obtaining Permanent Housing, Jennifer Bernard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a problem with the availability of permanent housing for ex-offenders, which increases the number of homeless ex-offenders, increasing the potential for recidivism that leads to inflated federal, state, and local incarceration budgets and higher taxpayer burdens. However, not much is known regarding the barriers ex-offenders face when seeking permanent housing in Anchorage, Alaska. Narrowing this knowledge gap was the purpose of this study, which was guided by Schneider and Ingram's social construction framework theory. The research goal of this study was to examine how the perception of ex-offenders and the external environment affect the ex-offender's ability of obtaining …
Restorative Justice As A Response To Middle School Rules Violations, Tammy Felps
Restorative Justice As A Response To Middle School Rules Violations, Tammy Felps
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The zero-tolerance approach of discipline in schools requires the involvement of law enforcement for many violations of school rules. Schools using this approach do not have the tools for effective behavior modification, without relying on school resource officers to intervene, often resulting in juvenile criminal charges. The key elements fueling this process are exclusionary discipline practices that lead to academic failure and increased high school dropout rates. Restorative justice (RJ), a targeted reform program, is a behavior management technique that promotes desirable conditions for successful academic achievement. Many schools are using components of RJ, encounter, repair, and transform; however, implementation …

There are a unique set of issues and needs that current policies and procedures fail to address for transgender inmates. Participants were invited to tell their experiences of incarceration which provided a description of their transgender identity and their lived experience through DOC. The 11 participants described their lived experiences in DOC along with their thoughts, feelings, and themes as they related …
Factors Of Black Transgender Ex-Offender Women That Contribute To Recidivism, Brittany Shakir
Factors Of Black Transgender Ex-Offender Women That Contribute To Recidivism, Brittany Shakir
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Black female transgender ex-offender recidivism rates continue to rise at a higher percentage than males. This has resulted in transgender female ex-offender unemployment and homelessness, which in turn creates opportunities to commit crimes. However, there are no programs that advocate for creating resources to ensure successful reentry of transgender ex-offenders into their communities. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand contributing factors to recidivism among Black transgender women ex-offenders while addressing an under-researched group of people, the transgender community. The theoretical framework for this study was McGuire's inoculation theory. The research question focused on what experiences affected …
The Values Influencing Assistant Principals' Decisions To Utilize School Resource Officers, Tracy Yvette Thompson
The Values Influencing Assistant Principals' Decisions To Utilize School Resource Officers, Tracy Yvette Thompson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
School administrators use control and maintenance to create a safe learning environment for students in the United States public schools. However, when school resource officers (SROs) within U.S. schools are assigned authority over disciplinary procedures certain students become negatively impacted. Substantial research has been conducted regarding the impact and roles of SROs, but very few studies explored the opinions of assistant principals (APs), the individuals typically responsible for the enforcement of school discipline. In this study, a qualitative interpretative design was used to explore what values and beliefs guide APs in their decisions to involve SROs in school disciplinary procedures. …

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) continues to be a major healthcare issue for many countries, including the United States. Millions of adolescent children under the age of 18 have lost 1 or both parents to AIDS-related complications. The death of a parent to AIDS-related complications is severe; however, limited data describes how this type of death affects adolescents after they have become young adults. It is important to determine how these adolescents are affected by exploring their lived experiences of losing a parent to AIDS-related complications. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences associated with …
Forensic Insight On Predatory Behavior: Fantasy And Relational Paraphilic Attachments In Stalker Processing, Elizabeth Ann Duemig
Forensic Insight On Predatory Behavior: Fantasy And Relational Paraphilic Attachments In Stalker Processing, Elizabeth Ann Duemig
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite the push to criminalize stalking, many of the actions that would legally fall under these provisions do not materialize into stalking-based arrests or convictions as stalking frequently becomes a lesser included offense under charges that escalate into violence. Insight into offender pathways related to predatory pursuit could serve to inform individuals faced with the forensic challenges of legal decision-making. The dynamics of stalking behavior include elements of fantasy and attachment. The objective of this study was to examine patterns of violent sexual fantasies and relational paraphilic attachment (RPA) in an offender’s process of stalking preselected victims. The research question …

The aftermath of the 9/11 attacks on the United States resulted in the introduction of the National Fusion Center Network. This effort seeks to empower National Security by effectively sharing information between various law enforcement organizations. Since the establishment of the Network, information that addresses the Networks' standard operating procedures and existing barriers to share information effectively has been lacking. This caused many criticisms as to whether the network is in fact effective in fulfilling its mandate to effectively share information between the various law enforcement agencies. Utilizing Bandura's cognitive theory of behavioral change, this phenomenological study identifies the strategies …
Experiences Of Police Officers Who Have Received Crisis Intervention Team Training, Ashley D. Yinger
Experiences Of Police Officers Who Have Received Crisis Intervention Team Training, Ashley D. Yinger
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police officers are often the frontline responders to calls involving people in mental distress. The lack of specialized mental health training can influence stigmatization and criminalization of people with a serious mental illness (SMI). Crisis intervention team (CIT) training is a tool to provide law enforcement with specialized mental health training to enhance their skills and comfort level when responding to crisis calls. There is a gap in the research examining officers' experiences with CIT training and how they apply that training when encountering people who have a SMI. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore a …

The Effects Of Gun-Free Zones And Mass Shootings, Melissa Gonzalez Rock
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There has been an increase in the number of mass school shootings even though there are policies in place such as the Gun-Free School Zone Act (GFSZA) to stop such crimes from occurring. Although there is a divide between supporters of these policies and those who want them revamped or removed, all want the same result: to end mass school shootings. The debate between those who wish to leave policies such as the GFSZA in place and those who seek to replace them with new policies that allow guns on campus for various personnel has strong advocates on both sides. …
