Successful Small Business Strategies Addressing Financially Related Adverse Circumstances, Shirley Thomas
Successful Small Business Strategies Addressing Financially Related Adverse Circumstances, Shirley Thomas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Small businesses are a crucial part of the economy of the United States. However, once a small business owner experiences a financially related adverse circumstance, the chances of failure increase exponentially. Grounded in the rational choice theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to identify and explore the effective strategies small business owners use when addressing financially related adverse circumstances. The participants were four small business owners in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area who used successful strategies to address financially related adverse circumstances. Data were collected using semistructured interviews and reviews of organizational documents and analyzed using …
Early Career Nurses’ Perceptions Of Quality And Safety In The Operating Room, Gilda H. Gilbert
Early Career Nurses’ Perceptions Of Quality And Safety In The Operating Room, Gilda H. Gilbert
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
With an ongoing shortage of operating room nurses, novices may be hired into circulator positions. Over 50 million people will undergo surgery in America this year, and many will be cared for by circulators with less than five years of experience. Little is known about how this burgeoning group of circulators perceive and experience quality and safety. In this qualitative descriptive study, the perceptions of quality and safety were explored in nurses who completed a postgraduate perioperative curriculum embedded with quality and safety competencies. Nurses were viewed through Benner’s characteristics of nurse competence and Bloom's domains of learning framed interpretations …
Perceptions Of Developmental Disability Service Providers, On How The Judicial System Responses To Persons With Developmental Disabilities., Donna Whilby
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The situation or issue that prompted me to search the literature was observing the persons with developmental disabilities circling the judicial system due to multiple encounters with law enforcement. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how the Northeast Florida judicial system could improve the outcomes of persons with developmental disabilities by reducing and preventing multiple encounters. The empowerment theory was the most appropriate theory for my study. Empowerment theory indicates that it is imperative to encourage people, especially those who have a psychological deficit, to lean into their resources to gain and utilize their power in society. …

Racial Stressors, Resiliency, And African American Women Counselors, Barbara Ann Bazemore
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American women therapists are the second largest group of counseling providers, with many displaying behavioral health symptoms differently than other cultures. This quantitative correlational cross-sectional study explored the resiliency of African American women counselors related to racial-specific stressors inclusive of self-identity, COVID-19 anxiety, and daily discrimination. Initially, three research questions were selected to investigate the relationship between demographic factors (age, education level, active years as a counselor), racial-specific stressors (self-identity, COVID-19 pandemic anxiety, and everyday discrimination), and resiliency in 112 African American women counselors. Emails and an online survey were sent to collect data to answer the research hypotheses. …
Symbolic Play And Imagination In Child-Centered Play Therapy, Stephanie Anderson
Symbolic Play And Imagination In Child-Centered Play Therapy, Stephanie Anderson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Child-centered play therapy (CCPT) is based on the theory that a child’s natural means of communication is through play. However, there is a lack of research into how this communication occurs in CCPT sessions. This grounded theory study explored the processes utilized by child-centered play therapists and their clients to communicate with each other using symbolic play and imagination. Data were gathered through semi structured interviews with six child-centered play therapists and three archival videos of CCPT sessions to gain a holistic understanding of how communication occurs in sessions. This study’s data analysis revealed 20 selective and six subcodes associated …
Factors Influencing Donation Decisions To Environmental Nongovernmental Organizations, Fernando Alferd Crocheron
Factors Influencing Donation Decisions To Environmental Nongovernmental Organizations, Fernando Alferd Crocheron
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
While philanthropic studies have been conducted for centuries, little information exists regarding factors that impel donors to make financial donations to environmental nongovernmental organizations (ENGOs). The phenomena surrounding human motivation have been studied via numerous lenses providing information focused on various domains of interest e.g., poverty alleviation, provisioning of educational opportunity, disease eradication, disaster relief, etc. The theoretical framework for this study was Self-Determination Theory (SDT). This study focused specifically on U.S. citizens and the motivational factors that impel said citizens to make monetary contributions to ENGOs. Ten participants ages 18 and over who had donated to an ENGO in …

The Concept Of Leadership During Climatological Crisis: A Comparative Case Study Of Puerto Rico Higher Education, Aniello Alberti
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
During times of climatological crisis, leadership is a crucial component of postsecondary education administrators’ arsenal, specifically regarding their ability to execute strategies in action plans aimed at restoring the normal operations of institutions. This comparative case study aimed to examine how strategies in crisis leadership plans were implemented in Puerto Rico's higher education system, focusing on the experiences of key administrators in two higher education units who managed the response to the impacts of the 2017 Hurricane Maria. The conceptual framework for this investigation was grounded in Blanchard and Hersey's situational leadership theory and Bass’s transformational theory. In-depth interviews were …
Skill Bias Perceptions Of Unskilled Workers' Self-Perception And Self-Efficacy, Cheryl M. Jackson
Skill Bias Perceptions Of Unskilled Workers' Self-Perception And Self-Efficacy, Cheryl M. Jackson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A common phenomenon witnessed in the United States health care industry is a division between skilled and unskilled workforces. The division results from skill bias perceptions that strip the appreciation and value of certain job titles and responsibilities. The purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental study focused on the human capability approach theory was to ascertain the differences in perception between the two types of workers and whether skill bias perceptions predict self-perception and self-efficacy. The goal was to recognize and support the innate human capabilities of unskilled workers as valuable human capital resources. From stratified sampling, 172 skilled and unskilled …
Relationship Between Self-Concept And Self-Compassion Scores And Weight-Loss Surgery Outcomes In Women, Christine Curry-Tuthill
Relationship Between Self-Concept And Self-Compassion Scores And Weight-Loss Surgery Outcomes In Women, Christine Curry-Tuthill
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity is a global health concern associated with a multitude of psychosocial issues, including emotional dysregulation, depression, low self-esteem, social isolation, and economic issues related to bias. Weight loss surgery is generally considered to be an effective treatment; however, insufficient weight loss and weight regain are not uncommon. Because self-compassion and self-concept are psychological and social constructs that have been shown to influence obesity and health, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between weight loss surgery outcomes and these two concepts to obtain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind suboptimal weight loss. The theoretical framework …
Predictors Of Work Styles And Transition Success From Military Service To The Civilian Workforce, Ryan Nicholas Schuler
Predictors Of Work Styles And Transition Success From Military Service To The Civilian Workforce, Ryan Nicholas Schuler
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Upon leaving the armed forces, service members face challenges transitioning to the civilian workforce. The relationship between service members’ work styles and successfully transitioning to the civilian workforce is unknown. It is also unknown if military occupation (MO) affects the relationship between work styles and transition success. Although researchers have investigated the transition from active military service to the civilian workforce, they have not focused on identifying predictors of transition success. Three theories, positive psychology, transformational learning theory, and career decision-making theory, were used as the foundation of the study and to develop the research questions to determine the success …

Relationship Between Community College Students’ Socioeconomic Status, Completing Reading Strategies Courses, And English Achievement, Renee Bothwell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although academic success among diverse community college students requires effective reading skills, providing support for struggling readers is becoming increasingly more difficult. The problem addressed in this quantitative study was that due to Assembly Bill 705, prohibiting colleges from offering remedial courses without data to substantiate their effectiveness, students at a Southern California community college may have no avenue to learn reading comprehension strategies that are necessary to be successful in college. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the predictive value of taking a reading strategies course (RSC) and socioeconomic status (SES) on final grades in English …
Police Officers’ Coping Styles And Occupational Stressors Impacting Self-Regulation In Adult Offspring, Dannie Analese Garcia
Police Officers’ Coping Styles And Occupational Stressors Impacting Self-Regulation In Adult Offspring, Dannie Analese Garcia
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police work, a high stress occupation with increased risks and adverse events, often leads to strain between work and family. Work-family conflict (WFC) has been shown to mediate coping with stress. In addition, offspring of law enforcement officers (LEOs) may learn self-regulation by observing parental stress coping and attempting to alleviate stress for their parent. Three theoretical frameworks were used in this study: WFC, spill-over cross-over model, and family systems theory. Using a quantitative design, surveys were completed by 35 parent-adult offspring pairs, with more LEO parent respondents (N = 71) than adult offspring respondents (N = 43). Linear regression …

The Lived Spiritual Experience Of Aging Adults (≥65), Eddie Doron Soffer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This phenomenological study explored the lived spiritual experience of aging adults (≥65), filling a gap in the literature relating to aging people’s spirituality in a variety of circumstances. The once-American youth-oriented society is growing older at an unprecedented rate as 76 million individuals of the baby-boomer generation (born 1946–1964) face retirement age. This demographic shift highlights a social problem of millions of aging baby boomers requiring a far-reaching change in the structure of society. This qualitative study aimed to gain insights into the lived experience of the spirituality of a sample of nine adults aged 65 and above by asking …

Mental Health Clinicians’ Experiences Of Treatment Length With Incarcerated Men In Therapeutic Community Substance Abuse Treatment, Crystal D. Nelson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over half of the incarcerated population suffer from a substance abuse disorder; however, less than 20% of those incarcerated have access to substance abuse treatment while incarcerated. In those facilities where substance abuse treatment is an option, pressures of overcrowding and financial constraints threaten the length of treatment programming offered to move more people through treatment quicker. Therapeutic communities (TCs) have been shown to be the best substance abuse treatment option for those who are incarcerated, but TCs were designed to be a phase-based program based on developmental changes and signs of growth through the program. The purpose of this …

Probation And Pre-Trial Officers' Perspectives On The Impact Of Maternal Incarceration On Children, Shaniqua Anderson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Because of the mass incarceration of women, maternal incarceration has become a phenomenon within itself. This phenomenon has led to an increase in Black children with an incarcerated mother; however, there is a lack of information about how the cycle of the mass incarceration of Black women is perceived on the community supervision level. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to better understand probation and pre-trial officers’ perceptions of how the maternal incarceration of Black women impacts Black children. Three research questions explored how participants viewed the impact of maternal incarceration on Black children, recidivism, and positive reentry. …

Applicants completed an instrument to measure the dependent variables of awareness, knowledge, and skills to work with LGB clients. The sample consisted of 84 master’s students in field experience and unlicensed counselors within 2 years of graduation. Multivariate analysis of variance was used to test the hypotheses. Participants from nonreligious-affiliated addiction counseling programs scored higher on the awareness (M = 68.82, M = 63.03), knowledge (M = 50.22, …
Women’S Participation In Kenya Dairy Cooperative Decision-Making Processes, Caroline Minoo Mukeku
Women’S Participation In Kenya Dairy Cooperative Decision-Making Processes, Caroline Minoo Mukeku
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Women contribute immensely to the dairy production workforce in Kenya, yet they lack access and control over production services and resources. They are also underrepresented in the decision-making processes of dairy cooperatives. Constraining women from reaching their maximum potential diminishes their ability to influence and participate in societal change. Although researchers have investigated this issue, few studies have focused on this topic. The purpose of this general qualitative study was to describe barriers that prevent women from participating in decision-making processes in Kenya’s dairy cooperatives. The research question was focused on factors that inhibit women’s participation in decision-making processes in …

Hospital Staff Members’ Lived Experiences Of Facilitating Yalom Focus Groups With Inpatient Adults In Psychiatric Units, Yemisi T. Abiona
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
An increase in inpatient psychiatric admissions across the United States with a decrease in funding necessitated a need to investigate clinical and cost-effective interventions to meet the demands. Research indicated that therapeutic group interventions are clinically sound and cost-effective. However, there are few evidence-based group interventions designed for acute and chronically ill psychiatric patients. The objective of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of Yalom group facilitators to determine whether the group could be further researched and adopted as a specialized group intervention for this population. Existential theory served as the theoretical framework for this study. …
Strategies For Leading Successful Virtual Teams, Amina Foley
Strategies For Leading Successful Virtual Teams, Amina Foley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Some leaders lack strategies to successfully lead virtual teams to prevent employee attrition and decreased revenue. Organization leaders are concerned with retaining experienced employees to continue and grow profitability. Grounded in the transformational leadership theory, as well as the cognition-based trust and affect-based trust theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore strategies leaders use to lead virtual teams successfully that improve trust and job performance, increase employee retention, and enhance organizational growth and profitability. The participants were seven virtual team leaders from the accounting and logistics industries who have experience with improving growth and increasing retention. …
Frontline Supervisors’ Strategies To Mitigate Employee Turnover, Patrina Amos
Frontline Supervisors’ Strategies To Mitigate Employee Turnover, Patrina Amos
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Employee turnover consists of tangible and intangible costs that burden frontline supervisors and limit organizations’ profitability. During turnover, frontline supervisors bear the costs of losing the outgoing employee and the expenses of replacing the employee, which can be double the employee’s annual salary. Grounded in social exchange theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore strategies that six frontline supervisors used to mitigate employee turnover. The data collected from semistructured interviews were thematically analyzed, resulting in four major themes: (a) communication, (b) supervisor support, (c) employee engagement, and (d) rewards and recognition. The primary recommendation is for …

Effects Of A Mentorship Program On High Need College Students: Reflections From Mentors And Mentees, Stephen Miske, Olusegun Sogunro
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
On average, the college graduation rates for minority and/or high-need students are generally low. To address this situation, a Mid-Atlantic Consortium recently secured a grant to improve 4-year graduation rates of high-need students (i.e., new first-time students and transfer students who qualify as low-income students, first-generation college students, adult students, and/or students of color) by 20% over each selected college’s baseline. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the experiences of students and faculty mentors toward accomplishing this goal. Data were transcribed, coded, and analyzed thematically. Some of the effects identified in this study included enhanced academic …

Climate Protest Scarcity In East Asia: Cross-Country Analysis Using Resource Mobilization Theory, Hikaru Komatsu, Yi-Huan Hsieh
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
Climate protests have been recognized as a catalyst for social transformation. Previous studies focused on protests in Western countries where protests were abundant. Few studies paid attention to regions where protests were scarce. As a first step towards understanding the reasons for climate protest scarcity in East Asia, we used Resource Mobilization Theory and explored factors correlated with climate protest significance among different countries. In addition to confirming factors already identified in previous studies (e.g., the density of non-governmental organizations), we uncovered two novel factors: working hours and trust in strangers. By examining these correlations, we discuss potential mechanisms underlying …

Broken Promises: Prolonged Diminished Quality-Of-Life Among Liberian Ebola Survivors Half A Decade After The 2014-16 West African Outbreak, Jessi Hanson-Defusco, Decontee Davis, Meghana Bommareddy, Zainab Olaniyan
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
The 2014–2016 Ebola outbreak left thousands of Liberian survivors with severely diminished quality of life. Applying a social determinants framework, this mixed method study investigates to what extent Ebola virus disease (EVD) survivors suffer long-haul psychosocial stress, diminished quality-of-life factors, and the impact of EVD-related service provisions on their ongoing healing. We present the results of a quantitative analysis survey of data collected from 19 Liberian EVD survivors in 2022 using snowball sampling. Additionally, a qualitative analysis of survivor statements helps triangulate key statistical findings and inform causal mechanisms. Survivors report experiencing 5.25 of a total of 7 ongoing stressors …
