Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Sri Lanka, despite gaining independence in 1948, has been plagued by ethnic separatism, negatively impacting 29.9% of its ethnic minorities and causing violence and civil unrest throughout the nation. This has hindered the nation’s sustained growth and development. This study addresses Sri Lanka’s ethnic separatism by examining three stages of its history through the lens of the polarities of democracy model. Police Officer Perceptions Of Parenting Experience Changes Following An On-Duty Child Death, Jennifer Sellers Mar 2024

Police Officer Perceptions Of Parenting Experience Changes Following An On-Duty Child Death, Jennifer Sellers

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Law enforcement officers (LEOs) work in careers that can be demanding, stressful, and traumatizing. Although researchers have explored vicarious, or secondary, trauma as it relates to a LEO bringing their experiences at work into the home environment, influencing their spouse or partner’s mental and physical well-being, they have not yet investigated how a LEO’s experience of a child death while on-duty might affect their parenting styles. The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand the parenting styles that LEOs use or change when they have experienced a traumatic incident at work, specifically a child death. The study was …

The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the practices of reentry program leaders in a southeastern state that reduce recidivism among formerly incarcerated African American women. Evidence-based leadership development provided a conceptual framework for assessing the results of practices in the reentry program. Current reentry program leaders in a southeastern state were asked to describe the leadership practices …

In 2020, more than half of United States law enforcement officer deaths were attributed to COVID-19, spurring the need for further investigation into the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on this category of frontline essential workers. The purpose of this quantitative secondary data analysis study was to investigate the existence of associations between U.S. law enforcement officer deaths (SARS-CoV-2, non-SARS-CoV-2, or other duty-related) and the geographic region, as well as year of death while controlling for the officer rank, age, and sex. Based on the conceptual framework for evaluating mortality and morbidity following large-scale disasters from the National Academies of …

The purpose of this study was to determine if teaching positive psychology in Boston, Massachusetts (MA)-area university college classrooms helped improve race relations. The primary research question involved determining factors that create racism and racial violence in society. The second research question was about if an education policy …

Senior Mental Health Clinicians’ Understanding Of Their Self-Efficacy While Providing Services At Community-Based Agencies, Rukiya Symister

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many mental health clinicians strive to provide their clients with rehabilitative and psychotherapy services resulting in a client gaining stable income and housing. However, the role of a senior mental health clinician (SMHC) is not without its challenges of trying to balance their well-being while dealing with increased coworker turnover, demanding caseloads, and limited access to community resources to provide clients with getting their lives back on track, thereby impacting clinicians’ understanding of their self-efficacy. Much of the research on self-efficacy has focused on mental health clients, mental health graduate students, and mental health trainees, often leaving out the lived …

Civilian Oversight Of Police Through The Lens Of Polarities Of Democracy, Joseph A. Mcmillan, Jacqueline D. Smith, William J. Benet

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Following the murder of George Floyd, the U.S. Congress called upon the National Organization for Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) to play a role in the reimagining of policing in America, including a transformation of policing from a warrior to a guardian mentality. In turn, NOBLE partnered with the Institute for Polarities of Democracy (the Institute) to conduct an analysis of the 21st Century Policing Report (the Report), which focused on addressing a myriad of issues that challenged the relationship between the police and communities. The Report determined there were six “pillars” necessary for effective policing in America, including (1) …

Epidemiology And Criminology: Managing Youth Firearm Homicide Violence In Urban Areas, Joseph A. Mcmillan

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Violence is considered a public health problem in the United States, yet little is known about the benefit of using a combined epidemiology and criminology (EpiCrim) approach to focus on urban youth gun violence. The purpose of this general qualitative study was to determine in what ways Akers and Lanier’s EpiCrim approach, in tandem with Benet’s polarities of democracy approach, is explanatory of gun homicides by youth in U.S. urban areas and if the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System adequately addresses gun abatement measures. I collected data through semi-structured interviews with 16 criminal justice practitioners and medical professionals with experience …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Forensic nurses are essential in helping forensic mental health patients at an inpatient/outpatient forensic psychiatric health care facility. The practice gap that the forensic psychiatric health care facility experienced was a deficit in knowledge among forensic nurses on the importance of workplace violence and prevention. The practice-focused question guiding the project was to determine if education on the American Nurses Association’s workplace violence and prevention measures would increase forensic nurses’ and staff’s education scores. The purpose of the project was to close the gap by educating nurses and staff on measures to increase a safer environment. The instructional design was …

Influence Of Citizen Police Academies On Attendees’ Knowledge And Perceptions Of Their Police Department, James Louis Lee Jr.

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Law enforcement officers are often forced to make split-second decisions that alter the lives of those affected. Some of these decisions are criticized by the public, which negatively affects the perceptions of law enforcement. Law enforcement agencies have sought ways to improve their community standing by implementing community policing initiatives including citizen police academies (CPAs). The purpose of this interpretative phenomenological qualitative study was to explore the influence of CPAs on attendees’ knowledge and perceptions of their police department. Institutional theory provided the theoretical framework for the study. Surveys with open-ended questions were sent to 11 participants who had completed …

Sociodemographic Predictors Of Veterans’ Health-Related Quality Of Life, Tamala Jones Choice

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a theoretical concept that intertwines physical, mental, emotional, and social functioning, with a focus on the impact that health status has on quality of life. Although sociodemographic factors are associated with lower HRQoL, how these factors influence HRQoL in military veterans is less understood. The study’s purpose was to examine the relationships between sociodemographic characteristics (gender, military pay grade, military branch, and geographic location) and perceived HRQoL measured by the SF-8 survey among veterans living in a metropolitan community in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. A cross-sectional recruitment study design yielded 90 …

Technological And Pedagogical Challenges For Teachers During Covid-19, Suzanne Reaid

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractImplementation of a national contingency plan to mitigate the effects of a natural disaster or major health crisis for schools in the United States has been a focus of scholars since the polio epidemic in 1916. While examining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education in the United States, researchers demonstrated that online remote instruction was adopted as a temporary answer to school closures, yet teachers were not prepared for this type of teaching. Researchers had yet to identify the technological and pedagogical challenges for teachers who taught remotely during the crises with little distance education experience. The purpose …
