Assessing Nurses' Demographic Cardiovascular Risk Factors And Pharmacogenetic Testing Knowledge And Acceptance, Stella Chibuzor Ohanuka
Assessing Nurses' Demographic Cardiovascular Risk Factors And Pharmacogenetic Testing Knowledge And Acceptance, Stella Chibuzor Ohanuka
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The lack of knowledge of pharmacogenetic testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD), coupled with their increased risk for CVD, may impair nurses' cognitions and attitudes toward pharmacogenetic testing for CVD. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional correlational study, conducted with 230 RNs without CVD who worked in acute-care settings in Georgia, was to determine if their years of education, years of experience, and gender significantly influenced their perceived risk for CVD (Questions 1-3) and their perceived knowledge of pharmacogenetic testing for CVD (Questions 4-6), and if their perceived risk for CVD significantly influenced their acceptance of pharmacogenetic testing for CVD (Question …
The Impact Of The Men Accepting Neophytes-Uplifting Pupils Community-Based Mentoring Program, Aisha Stephen
The Impact Of The Men Accepting Neophytes-Uplifting Pupils Community-Based Mentoring Program, Aisha Stephen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Effective mentoring programs are essential for African American youth to feel satisfaction and contribute to society, particularly in large urban communities. A need exists to study the impact of community-based mentoring programs in central Georgia, particularly those focused on male African Americans. Despite various mentoring programs, stakeholders know little about the elements of program impact for at-risk youths. Community mentoring programs frequently serve as a tool to minimize high dropout rates that often result from youth incarceration, expulsion, and suspension. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the perceptions of mentors and administrative staff on the impact …

Exploring The Employability Of African-American Male Ex-Offenders In Local Government, Chandra Latrelle Porter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The public sector is the largest employer that requires a background check. When African-American male ex-offenders return to their communities, they are often unable to find work in local government because of their criminal record. The central research question for this phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of African-American male ex-offenders regarding their employability in the local government sector. Guided by Sampson and Laub's life course perspective theory, a purposeful sample of 5 African-American male ex-offenders who applied for work or who currently work for local government entities in the state of Georgia was selected for this study. A three-interview …

Resisting Democratic Transition Through Terrorism: A Case Study Of Post Saddam-Hussein Iraq, Kellie Rourke
Resisting Democratic Transition Through Terrorism: A Case Study Of Post Saddam-Hussein Iraq, Kellie Rourke
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Democracy building operations in foreign nations in Iraq and Afghanistan have been met with resistance and at great cost in terms of dollars and lives. Reducing these costs requires understanding why individuals choose to resist the transition to democracy, yet current research in the field does not address the issues of a previously nonviolent population turning to terrorism to resist transition to democracy. The purpose of this single case study was to use rational choice theory and Crenshaw's 3 levels of causation to understand what factors influenced members of the Sunni sect to resist democratic transition following the 2003 invasion …

Strategies To Improve Productivity Of A Multigenerational Workforce, Grace Elizabeth Beasley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that millennials will soon represent 46% of the workforce. The anticipated changes in the workforce are of great concern to business leaders who may manage individuals from different generations. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies that administrative leaders in an advisory group of community-based organizations and educational institutions used to improve the productivity of a multigenerational workforce. The conceptual frameworks that grounded this study were the social constructivist perspective and generational theory. Data were collected from semistructured interviews to elicit narratives from 6 administrative leaders from 6 …
Hourly Roudning In Th Emergency Department, Marie Chapnick
Hourly Roudning In Th Emergency Department, Marie Chapnick
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The Affordable Care Act of 2010 increased the number of patients seen in a northeast, urban trauma emergency department by 34%. This created a problem as it occurred simultaneously with a nursing shortage. Consequently, patient satisfaction scores fell below the national average benchmark. The rate patients left the emergency department without being seen was 2.6% higher than the national average and patient fall rates increased by 20%. A review of the literature to search for solutions led to the support of an hourly rounding project and an educational workshop promoting proactive nurse behaviors as a way to address the quality …
Effect Of Multiple Skin-To-Skin Experiences On Exclusive Breastfeeding Rates, Joanna Horst Horst
Effect Of Multiple Skin-To-Skin Experiences On Exclusive Breastfeeding Rates, Joanna Horst Horst
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Breastmilk feeding at birth demonstrates short- and long-term medical and neurodevelopmental advantages. Infants who are exclusively breastfed demonstrate less nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and they experience less upper respiratory and ear infections than do infants who are not breastfed. One strategy that supports breastfeeding initiation is providing skin-to-skin contact (STS) with mothers and newborns immediately upon birth. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the impact of a second session of STS on the postpartum unit on exclusive breastfeeding rates at discharge. A retrospective comparison design using Swanson's caring model was used to guide the evaluation study that examined …

Working Mothers, Work-Life Balance, Locus Of Control, And Perceived Supportive Factors, Natashia Gridiron
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
From 1948 to 2015, there was a dramatic increase of mothers in the workforce. The literature demonstrates that mothers tend to work outside of the home while also maintaining most of the domestic roles. However, the literature does not address how these women are able to balance their roles. There is a gap in the literature concerning the relationship between locus of control, perceived supportive factors, income size, and work-life balance for working mothers. The purpose of this cross-sectional quantitative study was to fill that gap as measured by Rotter's Internal- External Control Scale, Satisfaction with Work and Family Balance …

Over 2 million adult men in the United States have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, with nearly 200,000 new diagnoses each year. This type of cancer is the leading cause of mortality in U.S. men. One possible risk factor for prostate cancer is a high level of iron in the body, but the association has yet to be confirmed. This study was an investigation of the relationship between serum iron concentration and prostate cancer using data obtained from the 2009-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. This quantitative study involved 1,850 men in the U.S. aged 51 to 70 years. …
Using Administrative Healthcare Records To Identify Determinants Of Amputee Residuum Outcomes, Judith Gail Walden
Using Administrative Healthcare Records To Identify Determinants Of Amputee Residuum Outcomes, Judith Gail Walden
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the United States, the number of major limb amputees is predicted to exceed several million in the coming decades. For those amputees using a prosthesis, their quality of life (QoL) is often modulated by residuum limb problems resultant from its use. Multiple factors preclude quality evidence-based medicine (EBM) research in the field of prosthetics, leading to greater health risk from prosthetic prescription ambiguity. Positive social change is integral to good QoL; studies support administrative healthcare (AHc) as useful to support such, especially in the absence of EBM. This study utilized Veterans Healthcare Administration (VHA) AHc data to discriminate determinants …
