Texas Metro Versus Nonmetro Variations In Cervical Cancer Preventative Measures, Amanda S. English
Texas Metro Versus Nonmetro Variations In Cervical Cancer Preventative Measures, Amanda S. English
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cervical cancer is a public health threat that can be eliminated with the use of preventative measures. Individuals who live in Texas’s nonmetro areas are more likely than individuals who live in metro areas of Texas to be diagnosed with cervical cancer. In this study, the individual- and county-level factors in metro and nonmetro areas that facilitate or inhibit the receipt of cervical cancer preventative measures at multiple levels of influence were examined. The ecological model was used as the theoretical framework. Using secondary data from a national population health survey (n=1,303), the goal of this cross-sectional, quantitative study was …
Conceptions Of Service Provider Preparedness, Aaron Engstrom
Conceptions Of Service Provider Preparedness, Aaron Engstrom
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Victims of human trafficking often need a variety of services to recover from their experiences. Service providers are organizations that aim to meet the personal and environmental needs of survivors by providing resources and guidance. However, the efficacy of services offered to survivors has not been robustly studied, which could leave unsuccessful survivor outcomes unnoticed. The purpose of this case study was to learn how service provider employees prepared to meet survivors’ needs. The combination of social cognitive theory and social constructionist theory served as the lens through which service provider employee conceptions of preparedness were explored. Four service provider …

Elementary School Teachers' Perspectives Of Instructional Strategies To Enhance Reading For African American Male Students, Nakita Annette Foreman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Some state mandated tests showed that many African American male students are not proficient readers. Teachers need to understand how to implement instructional strategies that will help enhance African American male students to read proficiently. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore elementary school teachers’ perspectives of instructional strategies to enhance reading for African American male students in second through fifth grades. The conceptual framework for this study consisted of Ladson-Billing’s culturally responsive teaching and the theory of social constructivism. The focus of the research questions explored elementary school teachers’ perspectives of instructional strategies they use to …

Staff Education To Improve Safe Use Of Antipsychotic Medication In An Outpatient Clinic, Marinette Nyangono Garrison
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe use of antipsychotic medications is growing in an outpatient clinic despite the increased risk of mortality and morbidity such as falls, fractures, stroke in adults, neurological adverse effects, weight gain, and cardio-metabolic abnormalities in pediatric populations. The purpose of this project was to develop an educational program to enhance clinic staff knowledge about pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic means to manage patients’ care and improve outcomes. The conceptual framework for the project was Knowles’s adult learning theory supported by the Kirkpatrick model of training evaluation. The practice-focused question asked whether an educational program would increase staff knowledge related to the safe …

Mental Health In The Military, Amy Jean Grasse
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The current qualitative research project explored the lived experiences of senior leaders who have worked with service members known to seek mental health treatment. Despite a large amount of research on the effects mental health has on military members, the scholarly community does not know the experiences individuals face when employing active-duty personnel with known psychological limitations. This phenomenological study aimed to identify senior leadership’s lived experiences to identify the barriers and facilitators they faced when employing service members known to have sought mental health treatment. The attribution theory and modified labeling theory were the theoretical frameworks chosen for this …

Emotional Intelligence And Self-Perceptions Of Counseling Competency In Counselors In Training, Ariel Katherine Hernandez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Counselor educators and regulatory boards continue to develop criteria to prepare counselors in training (CITs) for clinical practice. Despite the significant support they receive within the counseling course curriculum, some students lack the necessary counseling competency to succeed in the field experience component of their training. Emotional intelligence (EI) may be relevant in the ability of CITs to manage their emotions and relationships in personal, professional, and academic settings, but there is a lack of empirical evidence regarding the relationship between EI and counseling competence. The purpose of this quantitative study was to assess the relationship between EI and self-perception …

Experiences Of Women Of Color In Leadership Paths At Predominately White Institutions, Philomena Marie Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractResearch shows that the experiences of women of color in leadership paths at predominately White institutions (PWIs) have impacted their advancements and route to the presidency. However, there is limited research on the positive aspects of their leadership contributions or on the intersection of race and gender and mentoring in their leadership roles. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the experiences of women of color in leadership paths at PWIs. Black feminist thought and intersectionality were the conceptual framework used to understand those experiences. Thirteen women of color in leadership roles at PWIs in the United States …

A Study Of Racialized Identity Among Single, White Mothers Of Biracial Children, Shonjala Moore
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A limited amount of research addresses the challenges single, White, birth mothers of Black-White biracial children have experienced with racialized identity within their kinships and social networks. In this transcendental, descriptive, phenomenological study, the lived experiences of eight single, White, birth mothers of Black-White biracial children were investigated to address that research gap. The conceptual framework was Helms’s Black and White racial identity theory. After thematic analysis of semistructured interview data, five themes emerged to describe the experiences of the single, White, birth mothers of Black-White biracial children: (a) the mother’s insight, (b) racism, (c) attitude about a Black partner, …

Influence Of Online Professional Learning Networks On Teacher Self-Efficacy For Using Information Communication Technology, Jeremy A. O'Toole
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Information communication technology (ICT) is increasingly used to enhance teaching and learning, but many teachers lack mastery-level experiences using these computing technologies in the classroom. To further their knowledge, some teachers have turned to online professional learning networks (PLNs) for development, but further research is needed to explore how and why these networks change teachers’ practice. Framed by Albert Bandura's theory of self-efficacy, the purpose of this study was to explore the influence of online PLNs on teachers’ perceptions of their technological self-efficacy for implementing ICT in the classroom. The research question of this basic qualitative study with interviews addressed …

Grief Experiences Of Mothers After A Child’S Death From A Drug Overdose, Shonetesha L. Quail
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractResearch on young adult deaths primarily focuses on other causes of death such as homicide, suicide, and accidents. There is very little research surrounding maternal bereavement when the cause of death is from a drug overdose. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions, attitudes, and lived experiences of grieving mothers who had a biological, adopted, or stepchild die from a drug overdose when the decease’s age was between 18 and 25. Guided by Le Poi Devin’s multidimensional grief theory, the study sought a better understanding to assist mental health and other healthcare providers in developing individualized …

The Use Of Appraisal By Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Denise Victoria Wright
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 1% of the world population and places caregivers at an increased risk of stress. Researchers have begun to explore coping mechanisms such as appraisal to understand how parents and caregivers of people with ASD cope with parental stress, but their results have been inconsistent. There was a gap in existing literature regarding the influence of ASD symptoms on the relationship between use of appraisal (reframing negative concepts into a more favorable light), and parental stress. The ABCX model of family adaptation was used to understand how coping skills might protect …

Perceptions Of Associate Degree Nursing Faculty Of A Primary End-Of-Life Care Course Within Prelicensure Nursing Curricula, Katherine Zaharchuk
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe responsibility for educating U.S. nursing students on end-of-life (EOL) care concepts lies with prelicensure nursing programs; however, the majority of all prelicensure nursing programs offer only a few lectures, and only a small percentage offer EOL and palliative care courses. The lack of education on EOL care results in greater stress for nurses, poor symptom management for patients, and reduced support for family caregivers. There is limited knowledge on why primary EOL education has not yet been adopted by many Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) programs. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of ADN …

Education Policy Reform In Ghana And The Role Of Avatime Traditional Leaders, Hubert Kwami Akrong
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractWith declining academic standards in Ghana, public attention has been focused on education policies. In 1992, the amended constitution excluded traditional village leaders from being involved in formulating education policies in Ghana. The exclusion of grassroots leaders from education policy reform resulted in low expectations and poor student outcomes in the towns and villages of Ghana’s Avatime Traditional Area. This case study was an investigation into how traditional chiefs in the Avatime Traditional Area participate in democratic governance to improve education in the region. Joshee and Goldberg’s social justice theory in policy making was used to ground the study. Data …

Analysis Of National Origin Discrimination Suits Filed With The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Arantxa N. Almodovar
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Workplace discrimination has been a focus of scholars for several decades. Previous research has uncovered the practice of implicit bias in the form of pre-employment discrimination against minority groups based on factors not reflective of their work ethic or qualifications. The purpose of this study was to analyze national origin discrimination suits filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to understand why pre-employment discrimination continues to be a recurring issue in the workforce. The analysis focused on 46 randomly selected national origin discrimination lawsuits—two suits for each year between 1997 and 2020—of public record, which included the type of organization …

Disparities In The Sentencing Of African American Men In Wayne County, Michigan, Brian Banks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe ability of judges in the U.S. criminal justice system to administer penalties based on a defendant’s socioeconomic status has resulted in a disproportionate number of African Americans receiving harsher penalties than those of other racial groups and socioeconomic statuses. Currently, there is little evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of harsher sentencing of defendants with lower socioeconomic statuses in preventing crime or lowering recidivism, but more work is needed to clarify what sentencing factors judges use. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the factors that Wayne County, Michigan, judges used during the sentencing process of criminal defendants, along …

Assessing Relationships Among Autonomy, Supportive Leadership, And Burnout In Public Elementary Teachers, Jana Rose Benson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractStress and burnout among teachers are serious problems because of the negative consequences associated with them that have contributed to the current crisis in the American education system. Until the problems of teacher stress and burnout are understood and addressed, efforts to restructure American education cannot succeed. This study assessed the relationships among perceived autonomy, perceived transformational leadership style and burnout in public elementary teachers, and the moderating/mediating influence of teacher orientation (Montessori and traditional) on burnout levels. An integration of Maslach’s multi-dimensional burnout theory, self-determination theory, and the theory of transformational leadership formed the theoretical foundation of the study. …
