Engaging Children In Conversations About Loss With The Help Of A Canadian Activity Book, Giulia Adele Dinicola
Engaging Children In Conversations About Loss With The Help Of A Canadian Activity Book, Giulia Adele Dinicola
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
In Canada, the practice of medically assisting patients in dying has been legal since 2016. Patients who have been diagnosed with serious diseases or disabilities—including mental illnesses, starting in March 2024—may meet the requirements to seek medically assisted suicide. As a result of this legalization, medical and ethical communities have expressed concerns regarding those who assist their loved ones in the process of dying. To date, little has been written about how children react when someone close to them decides to end their life due to unbearable suffering. In July 2022, the Canadian Virtual Hospice group published the Medical Assistance …

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Some adults in mid and late life may have been particularly sensitive to the negative effects of social disruptions due to COVID-19 restrictions. The current study explored whether sociability moderated links between disrupted contact with friends and family and multiple indicators of mental health. We collected quantitative data via an online survey from a community sample of 136 adults in mid to late life (M age = 67.77, range 50–91; 69.3% females; 92.7% White). We conducted a series of hierarchical linear regressions to test for moderation. Controlling for age, gender, and marital status, sociability moderated the associations between disruptions …

The Lived Race Relation Experiences Of Black Male Counselor Educators, Timothy Irving
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cultural competence is a key metric in the accreditation of U.S. counseling education and supervision (CES) programs, with diversity among faculty members in counselor training programs a key consideration. However, there are very few Black men in CES faculty roles, especially at higher academic ranks. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how Black male faculty experience race relations in counselor education programs at predominantly White institutions (PWIs). In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six Black men who were current or previous CES faculty. Heidegger’s theory of hermeneutic phenomenology and the critical race theory were used to analyze …

Suicide Bereavement And Community Resource Use From A Clinician’S Perspective, Kristina Rose Culpepper
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social workers, clinicians, and mental health professionals commonly work to positively influence their client’s lives. Social workers specifically abide by the principle of pursuing social change for vulnerable populations. As suicide remains one of the top mental health concerns worldwide, the suicide-loss population continues to grow. Suicide loss is a social problem that affects all cultures and impacts individuals and communities. The suicide-loss population is vulnerable with seemingly limited research-based interventions and resources. The research addressed how clinicians describe the availability and benefit of community resources at each system level. This study was guided by systems theory, which allows clinicians …
