Staff Education To Increase Knowledge And Awareness Of Hand Hygiene, Karamjeet Kaur
Staff Education To Increase Knowledge And Awareness Of Hand Hygiene, Karamjeet Kaur
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are a significant concern in healthcare, contributing to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Despite the effectiveness of hand hygiene in preventing HAIs, compliance among healthcare providers remains suboptimal. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project aimed to evaluate whether an educational intervention could improve healthcare professionals’ knowledge and awareness of hand hygiene practices in a clinical setting. A convenience sample of 11 participants attended a 10-day educational intervention. Participants completed pretests and posttests to measure knowledge and awareness. The mean pretest score for knowledge was 8.73 (SD = 1.19), while the mean posttest score was 10.00 …

Defining The Hospital Social Worker’S Role And Geriatric Depression, Cara M. Galob
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hospital readmissions, compliance issues, increased long-term nursing home placements, and social determinants of health are significant concerns that burden the hospital inpatient industry. A notable factor that may impact these outcomes is the surprisingly high rates of depression in older adults. In various settings, social workers have historically provided clinical assessments and interventions for people suffering from depression. This study examines how clinical social workers can be utilized in a hospital inpatient setting to identify and treat older adults suffering from major depression. Social work interventions can positively impact many hospitals' long-term goals, such as improving the patient experience, achieving …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A staff education program was implemented for this Doctor of Nursing Practice project to improve nursing knowledge of the teach-back method. The identified practice problem was inadequate nurse-patient communication, which contributes to low patient comprehension, poor adherence to medication regimens, and suboptimal health outcomes. The practice-focused question guiding the project was, “Does an educational program on the teach-back method for patient medication adherence improve nursing knowledge as compared pre to post education?” The purpose of the project was to enhance nurses’ knowledge and skills regarding the teach-back method to improve patient communication, ultimately leading to better patient adherence and outcomes. …

Successful Human Resource Leader Strategies Used To Reduce Employee Turnover, Gilda Beatrice Lomas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Some Human Resource Managers (HRMs) and team leaders in customer service settings struggle to effectively implement conflict resolution strategies. HRMs are particularly concerned about the impact of unresolved conflicts, as they can lead to higher employee turnover. Grounded in emotional intelligence (EI), the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry study was to explore strategies that six HRMs in the United States use to retain customer service employees. Data were collected using semistructured interviews, public documents, websites, and professional artifacts that included direct involvement in managing teams within customer service settings. Through thematic analysis, four key themes were identified: conflict management …

Influence Of Officers’ Race, Suspects’ Characteristics, And Arrest Contexts On Police Homicide Victim Risk Factors, Dominique Damon Block
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Media attention on the fatal use of force by law enforcement personnel has worsened the divide amongst the police and minority communities, intensifying the lack of confidence between groups. Further research is called for to understand how the fatal use of force by law enforcement is influenced by officer race, suspect race, and characteristics of the alleged crime. Implicit bias theory and procedural justice theory were used as theoretical and conceptual frameworks. The three research questions examined the extent to which characteristics of the officer, characteristics of the alleged perpetrator, and circumstances of the homicide predicted (a) perpetrator mental illness, …

Clinical Practice Guideline End Of Shift Handover Toolkit, Sasha Samaroo-Burgos
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The DNP project is a Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) to guide nurses in performing end-of-shift reports at a Medical Center in the West Indies. The gap in practice identified is that nurses perform end-of-shift reporting without using a standardized document. This affects patient safety because the absence of a structured handover process disrupts the continuity of patient care and the transmission of vital patient data. The nurse administrator and general manager reported that many adverse events at the facility were related to miscommunication of information among nurses. The purpose of the project was to develop a CPG that nurses will …

Although male breast cancer (MBC) is rare, affecting 2,000 men in the United States each year and comprising approximately 1% of all breast cancer diagnoses, mortality for those diagnosed with MBC is significantly higher than for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Recent research on the disparities in mortality rates between men and women revealed that there may be unexplained factors for the diagnostic disparities between men and women. Bandura’s (1986) SCT was used as the theoretical framework for this quantitative study. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to determine whether there was an association between socioeconomic status, obesity, stage …

Perceptions Of Effectiveness Of Eye Movement Desensitized And Reprocessing For Those Diagnosed With Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Megan C. Stefanelli
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a short-term psychotherapy approach first introduced in 1987 by Francine Shapiro. Currently, EMDR is only a first-line treatment to relieve symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, this treatment modality could be expanded to generalized anxiety disorder if additional research was available. Further, research has demonstrated the effectiveness of EMDR from a quantitative perspective; however, there has been scarce research supporting the use of EMDR as a first-line treatment approach from a qualitative perspective. This hermeneutic qualitative study aimed to explore the psychological and physiological effects of EMDR on the brain from a …

Volunteer Perceptions Of Commitment In A Humanitarian Organization Involved With Nigerian Community Development Projects, Olaitan Ojuroye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research has shown that output from volunteers is unpredictable and uncontrollable, rendering strategic planning futile for organizations. This study explored adult volunteers' lived experiences regarding their perceptions of commitment to a humanitarian organization involved with Nigerian community development projects. Identifying why volunteers adopted attitudes was essential to support the organization's development and promote the community's development by helping practitioners better understand the volunteers and deploy them more appropriately. The framework that grounded this study included psychological contract theory, organizational commitment, and social undermining. This interpretative phenomenological analysis study involved a purposeful sample of 10 adult volunteers who participated in semistructured …
Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of The Implementation Of A New Workflow Process On The Incidence Of High Blood Culture Contamination (Bcc) Rates In The Emergency Department, Angelita Rodgers
