Ethical Decision-Making In Construction Engineering Projects, Monique Sidaross
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Problems exist with ethical decision-making in U.S. construction engineering projects.
The purpose of this study was to explore factors that affect ethical decision-making in engineering construction in the United States. The general concepts of marketing ethics, Kohlberg's discussion of ethical and moral reasoning development, and Gillian's discussion of ethical care served as the basis of the conceptual framework. Factors that inhibit ethical decision making were addressed in the research questions. The resulting narrative framework included implementable initiatives based on these factors that could improve the quality of ethical decision-making and the impact of these initiatives on the cost and quality …

Development Of Patient-Centered Team-Based Care Certification, Stephanie Lynn Stewart
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Accountable care units (ACU-?¢) provide a new model for integrated patient care. The ACU-?¢ promotes patient centeredness in nursing units as team members work collaboratively with physicians to improve patient outcomes and reduce unwarranted variations. A health system in the southeastern United States incorporated the ACU-?¢ as part of their care model. These units were held accountable for their clinical, service, and cost outcomes but lacked a validation process to demonstrate the effective utilization of their data. The purpose of this DNP project was to create a patient centered care (PCC) certification process, guided by the Donabedian model, that would …

Social Support And Psychotherapy For Asian And Pacific Islanders With Hiv/Aids, Venus Vacharakitja
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
HIV/AIDS rates among Asian and Pacific Islanders (APIs) have increased steadily in recent years. The Health Resources and Services Administration reported in 2011 that people living with HIV/AIDS experience psychiatric disorders at a rate 4 to 8 times higher than the general population, with as many as 60% experiencing depression. Studies show that short-term psychotherapy reduces depression and anxiety in people with HIV/AIDS, and studies have indicated that patients have better health outcomes when they receive psychotherapy in conjunction with medical treatment. It is not known how social support relates to psychotherapy attendance or health outcomes as measured by CD4 …

Living With Muscular Dystrophy: Sexual Education, Leanne Beers
Living With Muscular Dystrophy: Sexual Education, Leanne Beers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Sexual pleasure and intimacy are fundamental and innate human needs. Individuals with physical disabilities often find it difficult to meet these needs because of such factors as impaired mobility and lack of knowledge about sexual health. People with physical disabilities are often seen as asexual and not capable of having sex, and sexuality is often not considered a concern among this population. These misconceptions can result in individuals with physical disabilities not receiving basic sex education or advice and guidance when issues arise. Not receiving this attention may impede disabled individuals' sexual potential and personal relationships. This study's focus was …

A Staff Educational Initiative To Improve The Use Of Childhood Obesity Guideline Recommendations, Kris Kuhlmann Louque
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity affects one out every six children in the United States, which places them at risk for other chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and continued obesity into adulthood. Considering military children are more likely to enter the Armed Forces than their civilian counterparts, an increase in obesity among military families decreases the number of potential future military recruits who are physically eligible to serve. Despite this growing epidemic, providers report a lack of education and a low self-efficacy in the treatment of this condition. This doctorate of nursing practice study addresses this educational gap by attempting to improve …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Bullying has long been associated with school children. In recent years, however, more attention has been paid to the bullying that has reached beyond the playground and into the workforce. One population facing this problem is staff nurses. To date, no one has found an effective way to address workplace bullying in the healthcare field, nor have effective methods been found for retaining trained nurses affected by this problem. The focus of this dissertation was on understanding nurses' lived experiences and how nurses decided to remain in their current working position despite these problems. Taking a phenomenological approach and using …
Relationship Between Federal Compliance Complexities And Internal Control Infraction, Laurence Richard Brown
Relationship Between Federal Compliance Complexities And Internal Control Infraction, Laurence Richard Brown
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the nonprofit industry, lapses in internal controls and low levels of accountability have resulted in many organizations becoming insolvent. Grounded in the agency theory, the purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between federal compliance requirement, executive compensation, nonprofit size, nonprofit type, and internal control infraction. Archival data were collected from 144 nonprofit organizations in the southeast United States. The results of the multiple regression analyses indicated the model was able to predict the relationship between federal compliance requirement, executive compensation, nonprofit size, nonprofit type, and internal control infraction, F(7, 136) = 6.559, p < .001, R2 = .252, with non-profit type (hospitals), (β = -9.392, t = 7.191, p <0.050), accounting for a higher contribution to the model than executive compensation, (β = -0.049, t = 1.96, p <0.050). Federal compliance requirement and nonprofit size did not explain any significant variation in internal control infraction. The implications for positive social change included the potential for a better understanding by nonprofit managers of the importance of internal controls, leading to the effective and efficient provision of goods and services needed by members of society.

The Effectiveness Of Screening For Comorbid Depression Among Outpatients With Chronic Diseases In Maryland, Linda Hasssan Allibalogun
The Effectiveness Of Screening For Comorbid Depression Among Outpatients With Chronic Diseases In Maryland, Linda Hasssan Allibalogun
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression is a pervasive mental health disorder worldwide. Although being diagnosed with chronic illness exacerbates susceptibility to depression, detection and subsequent treatment of comorbid depression in primary care settings remain suboptimal because patients with chronic medical disorders are not commonly screened for depression. There is a need to initiate proactive measures by implementing routine screening in primary care settings. The plan-do-study-act (PDSA) model guided an intervention to establish a depression screening practice. This study aimed to determine if the implementation of evidence-based screening for depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) tool could increase diagnosis of comorbid depression among patients …
