Chemistry Publications
We report new insights into the ultrafast rearrange- ment and dissociation dynamics of nitromethane cation (NM+) using pump−probe measurements, electronic structure calculations, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The “roaming” nitro−nitrite rearrangement (NNR) pathway involving large- amplitude atomic motion, which has been previously described for neutral nitromethane, is demonstrated for NM+. Excess energy resulting from initial population of the electronically excited D2 state of NM+ upon strong-field ionization provides the necessary energy to initiate NNR and subsequent dissociation into NO+. Both pump−probe measurements and molecular dynamics simulations are consistent with the completion of NNR within 500 fs of ionization with …

Remembering Dr. Melanie Buffington: Three Reflections On Her Impact And Influence, Luke A. Meeken, Hannah K. Sions, Carlisle Kramer
The Melanie Buffington Papers
Dr. Melanie Buffington's influence on the field of art education can be both acknowledged on a large scale through her history of scholarly publications, and felt on a more intimate scale through the countless emerging scholars and preservice teachers whose practices she shaped through her mentorship and pedagogy. In this piece, three emerging art education scholars and practitioners—a former student, a former mentee, and a former teaching assistant of Dr. Buffington’s—reflect on the impact Dr. Buffington had on their own practices

The Impact Of Library Instruction On Medical Student Information Seeking Behavior, Angela Barr
Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Medical Library Association (MAC- MLA) Annual Meeting Posters/Presentations
Background
To describe initial efforts to impact the information seeking behaviors of medical students during Grand Rounds exercises completed in their first and second years of pre-clinical education.
Description
Librarians received student responses to an information literacy question that is embedded in the Grand Rounds activity and analyze the data as follows. Sources were tallied and grouped according to resource type. Next, librarians attempted to assess the quality of certain sources. Third, search terms provided by students were aggregated and analyzed to determine frequency of use. Finally, a DML librarian-educator presented the compiled data to the entire class, making suggestions …
Giving It All You’Ve Got: The Value Of Extending Hours In An Academic Health Sciences Library, G.J. Corey Harmon, Kerry Sewell
Giving It All You’Ve Got: The Value Of Extending Hours In An Academic Health Sciences Library, G.J. Corey Harmon, Kerry Sewell
Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Medical Library Association (MAC- MLA) Annual Meeting Posters/Presentations
Objective
University libraries’ student satisfaction surveys regularly reveal student demand for increased operating hours to accommodate student learning. While academic libraries may provide extended hours, use of such models in academic health sciences libraries appears to be less widely adopted, perhaps due to budgetary concerns and lower general gate counts than academic library counterparts that may already provide extended hours. In the face of student demands, our institution shifted its budget to provide an additional 10 weekend hours, between Friday and Sunday, to help meet these demands. This study assessed the return on investment for those increased hours by tracking …
Slow-Stroke Back Massage Compared With Music Therapy For Leukemia-Related Pain And Fatigue: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Rhea Tammireddi
Slow-Stroke Back Massage Compared With Music Therapy For Leukemia-Related Pain And Fatigue: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Rhea Tammireddi
VCU's Medical Journal Club: The Work of Future Health Professionals
This presentation focused on the effects of nonpharmacological treatments for leukemia-related pain and fatigue. These types of treatments are becoming more prevalent in today's times due to the risk of opioid addictions with increased pain medications. The study looked at two treatments: slow-back massage therapy and music therapy. Both treatments offer various advantages physically and emotionally. The study separated 114 adults with acute myeloid leukemia into the two treatments group and a control group of standard treatment. The results showed back massage therapy had a stronger and longer effect on the reduction of pain and fatigue.

Commonwealth Scholars Program
1 in 11 people aged 45 years and older experience subjective cognitive decline, with nearly a third identifying a decline in the ability to participate in social activities, work, or volunteering. There are twelve modifiable risk factors that can either increase or decrease an individual's possibility of developing Dementia. This can include excessive alcohol consumption, head injury, air pollution, lower education level, hypertension, hearing impairment, smoking, obesity, depression, physical inactivity, diabetes, and infrequent social contact. These modifiable risk factors may prevent or delay up to 40% of dementias. Furthermore, many risk factors cluster around inequalities, which occur particularly in Black, …

Comparative Investigation Of Structure And Operating Parameters On The Performance And Reaction Dynamic Of Co Conversion On Silica Aerogel And Fumed-Silica-Supported Pd Catalysts, Rola Mohammad Al Soubaihi, Khaled M. Saoud, Joydeep Dutta
VCUarts Qatar Faculty Research
The catalyst morphology, metal-support interaction, and reaction conditions greatly influence the catalytic performance and reaction dynamics. Similarly, the dispersion of the metal within the support plays a crucial role in the thermal stability and sintering of the catalyst. Furthermore, temperature-dependent conversion hysteresis is well-known to occur during ignition and extinction of exothermic CO oxidation over supported Pd catalysts due to the variation of CO adsorption on the surface or bulk oxidation of Pd and the ability of the catalyst to regenerate the active sites. Herein, the catalytic performance and the hysteresis behavior of mesoporous silica aerogel supported Pd (Pd/a-SiO2), and …

Nlp@Vcu: Crop Characteristic Extraction Framework, Cora Lewis, Bridget Mcinnes, Getiria Onsongo
Summer REU Program
We developed a crop characteristic extraction framework. Starting from a custom SpaCy named entity recognition model, we added pre-trained word embeddings and a part-of-speech based entity expansion post-processing step. Then, we implemented an evaluation framework that functioned as a 5-fold cross validation wrapper for SpaCy custom training. Preliminary results showed improvement in the extraction framework after these additions.

Fish Sound Production: The Swim Bladder, Michael L. Fine, Eric Parmentier
Fish Sound Production: The Swim Bladder, Michael L. Fine, Eric Parmentier
Biology Publications
Analogous to the syrinx in birds and larynx in mammals, the swim bladder is a major sound-producing organ in fishes. It also functions in hearing and is responsible for most returns from sonar. Historically, the swim bladder has been modeled as an underwater resonant bubble, whereas we provide evidence for a forced-response model in which viscous damping of the bladder wall inhibits resonance of the internal bubble. Further experimental work on the shape, wall structure, and mechanical behavior of the swim bladder is required.

Vision, Advocacy, Narrative, Outreach: Strategic Communication For New Library Buildings, John E. Ulmschneider
VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
The scholarly and practice literature on communication strategies reveals the importance of both strategically crafted message content and a multilevel messaging process that reaches all stakeholders and potential supporters. This chapter describes how Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries developed and implemented a visioning, advocacy, and communications strategy in support of a major library construction initiative. The successful effort led VCU Libraries’ disparate communities to embrace and support a distinctive, award-winning library design that departed both from architectural practice at the university and from initial expectations for library buildings among stakeholder communities.

Background
Radiation-induced myocardial fibrosis increases heart failure (HF) risk and is associated with a restrictive cardiomyopathy phenotype. The myocardial extracellular volume fraction (ECVF) using contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) quantifies the extent of fibrosis which, in severe cases, results in a noncompliant left ventricle (LV) with an inability to augment exercise stroke volume (SV). The peak exercise oxygen pulse (O2Pulse), a noninvasive surrogate for exercise SV, may provide mechanistic insight into cardiac reserve. The relationship between LV ECVF and O2Pulse following thoracic radiotherapy has not been explored.
Methods
Patients who underwent thoracic radiotherapy for chest malignancies with significant incidental heart …
