An attempt has been made to give in this article a review of some of our activities since I first met Ernst Fischer in Göttingen many years ago. I have not related the work of our laboratory to that of others. Also, I have only described observations made on chromaffin tissue. The catecholamines have acquired a much wider importance with their discovery in adrenergic neurones, and, more recently, in the central nervous system. In this paper some of the highlights of research on the nature of the resting frog skin potential have been presented. Reviewing a period of about 30 years, it was the intention to show that several key problems have been recognized by a number of investigators who, through their experimental work, have tried to find unequivocal solutions to such problems as follows: a) The number and location of electrogenic layers (barriers) within the rather complex epidermis. b) The characterization of these barriers in terms of specific permeability properties. c) The electrical response of the two sides of the skin to …

The rate of progress in virus research today is so rapid that for many the present is the future. Consequently, in order to discuss the future in comprehensible fashion, I must talk about the present state of affairs--to discuss current knowledge which furnishes the basis for contemporary enormous interest in viruses. It is precisely those considerations which will furnish the springboard for future progress in understanding and controlling the effects of virus infections.

The Pathogenesis Of Atherosclerosis And Coronary Heart Disease, Joseph T. Doyle

Fifty-five percent of all deaths in the United States are ascribed to cardiovascular disease. The vast majority of these deaths are due directly or indirectly to atherosclerosis and its ischemic complications (Am. Heart Assoc., 1965; U.S. President's Commission on Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke, 1964). Atherosclerosis is defined in Dorland's dictionary (24th edition) as "a lesion of large and medium-sized arteries with deposits in the intima of yellowish plaques containing cholesterol, lipoid material and lipophages." The Synthesis Of 4-Spiro-2-Aryloxazolines Of Potential Pharmacological Interest, Paul Waddell Collins

Numerous and diverse physiological actions are found among 2-oxazoline compounds. No reports of the synthesis or biological testing of 4-spiro-2-aryl-2-oxazolines were found in the literature. On the basis of the known pharmacological activities of certain aza- and diazaspirans, it was felt that 4-spiro-2-aryl-2-oxazolines should possess medicinal activity. In particular, it was reasoned that the combination in a bicyclic spiro structure of the 2-oxazoline ring with rings systems commonly found in synthetic antitussive compounds might result in active antitussive agents.

The aim of this research was the synthesis of a series· of 2-aryl-2-oxazoline-4-spirocyclopentanes and a series of 1'-methyl-2-aryl-2-oxazoline-4-spiro-4’-piperidines. Six members were …

When human leucocytes are artificially stimulated in vivo or in vitro by a bacterial pyrogen, they release, without destroying themselves, a pyrogenic substance that differs chemically and biologically from the original bacterial pyrogen (Snell et al., 1956; Cranston et al., 1956). Although leucocytic pyrogen has not been seen, or at least recognized, by light or phase microscope, a finely granular extracellular material is consistently visible by electron microscope in artificially stimulated leucocyte preparations that we know to be pyrogenic (Goodale, Fillmore, and Hillman, 1962). After a relatively long interval in which the status quo was maintained, in the early 1950's American medical schools began to reappraise their educational programs. Many shortcomings of medical education which now have been corrected were cited as early as 1946. The Medical College of Virginia began a detailed study of its educational program. A curriculum has been designed and initiated, using the subject matter committee approach. The curriculum provides opportunity for electives, research, and free time. In conjunction with the revised curriculum, changes in grading procedures, examinations, and teaching methods have been made. A study to assess the effects …

The Effect Of Idoxuridine (Idu) On Corneal Stromal Cells In Tissue Culture, Walter J. Geeraets, Guy Wong, Dupont Guerry Iii

Corneal stromal cells were cultured in vitro and exposed to various concentrations of idoxuridine (IDU), ranging from 0 to 1,000 μg of IDU per ml of medium. Inhibition of cell multiplication occurred with concentrations of 0.1 μg per ml. With concentrations of 1.0 μg per ml and greater, there was no increase in cell number from the time of exposure to IDU.

Γ-Globulin Administration And Anti-Globulin Antibodies In Children, Marion Waller, Nellie Curry

We examined sera from 185 non-hospitalized children, 44 of whom had received repeated injections of γ-globulin for upper respiratory infections. There was no significant difference in the incidence of anti-globulin antibodies in the two groups. The presence of anti-globulin antibodies could not be correlated with the level of γ-globulin in the children's sera or with the age of the children.
