At this point in time, the most intensive efforts toward education should be made in the medical schools. Very shortly these students will be faced with large numbers of patients with venereal disease, and we must prepare them. Unfortunately, this area in the medical school curriculum has been progressively crowded out by what seemed more important. It is now apparent that even though the prevalence of venereal disease may wax and wane, they will always represent a sizable medical problem. We must gear medical education and medical reeducation to meet these needs.

Observations Of Lens Epithelium In Cell Cultures, Walter J. Geeraets

The following investigation had been conducted to evaluate lens epithelial cells in vitro as a potential suitable model for future studies of chronic low dose ionizing radiation effects on this cell type in vitro. Since there is a great range of dose requirements to produce in vivo radiation cataract in man, monkeys, and rabbits, and an equally wide range in time from radiation exposure until the first minimal lens changes can be biomicroscopically detected, it may be assumed that in vitro comparison of cells derived from these three species may provide some explanation for the in vivo differences.

Because of the time factor involved, it would be an impossible task to present the vast body of biochemical information accumulated during the last decade on the endocrine aspects of pregnancy. However, certain key points can be made concerning the feto-placental unit and the hormone levels and effects in normal gestation. These concepts will be discussed not merely for their academic value, but also as a base to evaluate our present diagnostic and therapeutic endeavors in obstetrical practice. With the audience’s indulgence, an occasional personal conjecture will be interjected concerning hormonal mechanisms and clinical practices.

The type or configuration of lens changes in these two species was quite different. This can be understood on the basis of the structural differences of their crystalline lenses based on the location of the suture lines.

While transsexualism is a disorder which seems to affect both anatomical sexes, the gynecologist plays his principal role in the therapy of the male transsexual, i.e., the anatomical male who considers the difficulty to be that of a female psyche trapped within a male body. It is only with these male patients with a female gender orientation that this discussion will deal.

What I want to discuss are not the potential therapeutic or diagnostic uses of these newly available compounds, which are really very speculative, but certain features of the physiological control system in which these compounds are thought to play key roles. Any rational system of therapeutics or prophylaxis involving these releasing factors, or their derivatives, must be based on adequate understanding of (1) the physiological roles of these compounds, (2) how these roles may be altered by disease, and (3) the effects specific disturbances of the control system(s) in which they operate can be expected to have on reproductive processes.

The normal process of development of sexual identification slides almost unnoticed through well-defined, but overlapping stages to a definite end point. That end point is an individual who senses that his core gender, male or female, is consistent with the body morphology, the external genitalia, the chromosomal configuration, and the hormonal balance. Also, there must be the development of personality traits, masculine or feminine, consistent with the sense of core gender. Public education, although beset with criticism from its inception, is in the midst of weathering its most severe storm. One need only note the newspaper headlines for a week to see the myriad of demands being placed upon the schools. On one hand, there is increased demand for productivity--what Talcott Parsons, in his book, The Social System, would call instrumental education (education for usefulness)--and on the other, there is the insistence upon strengthening humanism in teaching and learning--again drawing on Talcott Parsons--called expressive education (education for self-fulfillment) (1). Effect Of D-Amphetamine, Guanethidine, Disulfiram, And Stress On Gastric Ulceration In The Rat, Thomas M. Beall

Albino rats were injected with various doses of d-amphetamine (.02 mg/kg- 9 mg/kg) and subjected to 4 hours restraint in a cold (+5 degrees C) environment. Differential effects on ulceration were observed as a function ot the d-amphetamine dose level. Pretreatment with a .50 mg/kg injection of d-amphetamine significantly inhibited ulceration over that of saline injected, control animals, while a 9 mg/kg dose injection of the drug significantly facilitated it. Such results were explained in terms of a model interaction between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system activity, and the effect that such activity has on gastric conditions conducive to ulceration. …

The access of drugs to variofis sites of action in the body is impeded by a succession of membranes. Likewise, the removal of a drug or foreign substance from the body is similarly dependent on the ability of the substance under consideration to permeate biological barriers. A con-committant problem generally arises concerning the overall time course of drug action: that of drug storage through binding or similar processes. The Anatomical Relationships, Ultrastructure, And Function Of The Pineal Gland In Some Common Laboratory Rodents, Joseph Chester Gregorek

The pineal complex of rodents is made up of a pineal organ which developmentally always originates from the area between the habenular and posterior commissure and a pineal sac which is continuous with the choroid plexus of the third ventricle. This sac appears to be identical to the choroid plexus at both light and electron microscopic levels. The pineal sac abuts the deep and superficial pineal organs of the golden hamster. In the PET mouse, gerbil, kangaroo rat and Chinese hamster, the sac is contiguous with only small areas of pinealocytes. This sac never abuts true pineal parenchyma in the …
