Pharmacokinetics is that area of pharmacology concerned with the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination of drugs. The processes by which absorption, distribution, and elimination take place are referred to as unit processes. These occur independently and concurrently, and involve such activities as absorption into the blood, elimination from the blood, distribution between the blood and tissue, inactivation in tissues, and finally, elimination from the blood. Drug handling by the body can be characterized by the rate for each step or, more often, the rate of all processes. Classification of observed kinetics for these rate processes includes first-order, zero-order, and capacity-limited …

Surgical Care Of The Lower Extremity In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Roby C. Thompson

One of the most important things for the physician to recognize in referring a patient to the orthopedic surgeon for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis is the goal of surgical correction. The primary goal in surgical treatment of diseased joints in the lower extremity is relief of pain. Some pain-free patients have such severe deformities that a surgical procedure may be undertaken in order to improve and restore function, accepting certain calculated risks; however, to improve function surgically in a pain-free joint requires complete and full understanding on the part of the patient as well as the physician.

A Review Of Some Aspects Of L-Forms And Gonococci, Charles L. Cooke, Bernard Germain, Bonnie Balducci, Harry P. Dalton

Systemic manifestations of gonococcal disease, such as arthritis, are often sterile on the usual culture methods used to grow gonococci. Allergic mechanisms have been invoked to explain this but with little evidence to support the concept. With the report by Holmes et al., that L-forms of gonococci were isolated from joint fluid of a patient with gonococcal arthritis, we decided to investigate the possible role of L-forms in gonococcal disease.

Advances In The Management Of Pituitary Tumors, Charles B. Wilson

A new development in the management of pituitary tumors is the transsphenoidal technique. It will be my purpose to show that it provides an elegant way of handling the great majority of pituitary problems, at least the ones that I have encountered, although it has its shortcomings as well as its advantages.

The analysis of variance for experiments where the fixed effects or random effects model is appropriate is generally agreed upon with regard to testing procedures and covariance structure. It is only in experiments involving both random and fixed factors, i.e. mixed effects models, that controversy occurs as to the proper analysis. The mixed effect model has been considered by many statisticians, and several techniques have been developed for explaining its structure and performing its analysis for balanced data sets. The relationship of these techniques have been discussed in several papers as well.

Hepatic Ornithine Metabolism In Hydrazine-Treated Rats, Van Saxton Hubbard

Ornithine plays an important role in mammalian intermediary metabolism. Ornithine can be (1) utilized as a component of the urea cycle, (2) decarboxylated to form putrescine, a precursor of the polyamines, spermidine and spermine, and (3) converted metabolically to arginine, proline and glutamate. In prior investigations conducted in our laboratories and others, free endogenous hepatic pools of ornithine were found to be elevated following hydrazine administration. Consequently, time-course alterations of arginase, ornithine δ-transaminase, ornithine transcarbamylase, and ornithine decarboxylase activities were investigated regarding the effect of hydrazine treatment on hepatic ornithine metabolism in the rat. An original study was undertaken to examine the relationship of clients of Project Jump Street, Inc., a methadone maintenance program, to changes in personality factors as measured by R.B. Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Inventory, to compare the national norms of drug addicts/methadone users to the result of the 16 PF of clients of Project Jump Street, Inc., and to determine if significant differences appear among treatment phase I, phase II, and phase III.

Atherosclerotic disease is an almost universal phenomenon and increases in severity and frequency with increasing age. Atherosclerosis may contribute to several disorders including bursting of an artery, blockage of an artery, or induction of arterial clotting. The culmination of these diseases is usually premature since at the time of death the unaffected organs are in reasonably satisfactory condition and could have operated for several more years. Among the many factors which act in concert to produce the disease, serum cholesterol levels play a central role. VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
