Hypertension or high blood pressure is a major cause of illness and death in the United States today.^1,2 An estimated thirty-six million people suffer from this disease.³ Prolonged hypertension and its attendant strain on various organs may cause heart failure, brain stroke or kidney damage.⁴ Usually, a pressure of 140/90 mm Hg is taken to be the dividing line between normotension and hypertension.^5,6

There has been a growing interest in recent years in the study of person-environment interaction in the elderly. Several theoretical models have been proposed in the gerontological literature. Each of these models suffers from one or more limitations, including the restriction of requiring that the person and the environment be measured in the same terms, and the difficulty posed by attempting to empirically test the model.

A new model of person-environment interaction in the elderly is proposed here. The model views life satisfaction as the ultimate outcome variable. Feelings of personal control and choice are seen as intervening between life …

Although the adaptive significance of daily and seasonal fattening of birds has been studied by many investigators (see Odum, 1965; King, 1972; Blem, 1976a), surprisingly little is known about the interactions of proximate and ultimate environmental factors regulating avian lipid levels. An exception is the study by Evans (1969). He found that lipid levels in Yellow Buntings (Emberiza citrinella) were more closely correlated with long-term temperature averages than with temperatures of the day of capture, or the days preceding or following capture. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Cancer is the number two killer in the United State and will probably account for some 400,000 deaths in 1982. The lung has now achieved the dubious distinction of being the most common site of cancer in men and causes the most deaths. Cancer of the colon and rectum is the second most common cancer in both males and females combined, whereas carcinoma of the breast and uterus predominate in women.

Breast cancer comprises approximately 13.9% of all cases of malignancy in both sexes and 19% in women, in whom it is the commonest form of cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that 110,000 women developed breast cancer in 1981, and some 37,100 deaths from the disease occurred. The five-year survival rate has been improving over the past 40 years as shown in Table 1, but patients remain in risk of recurrence indefinitely and survival for ten years is generally accepted as the minimal time period necessary to establish the validity of new therapies.

Recent Advances In Gastorintestinal Cancer, Galen L. Wampler

Colorectal carcinoma accounts for the majority of all gastrointestinal cancers and is the second leading site of cancer, excluding skin cancers, in overall incidence in the United States. Cancer of the stomach, although decreasing in frequency is still an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, data from large numbers of patients such as can be found in Cancer Patient Survival Report No. 5 show only very modest increases in survival for patients with these diseases in recent years.
