VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

I propose that there is a direct correlation between the precarious state of our cultural pattern and the role that artists and art educators assume in our society. I hope to demonstrate that the near fatal deficit of our culture is its undue esteem of individualism over the community--of private gain over the public good, and that the artist and art teacher reflect these same social values. Historically, scientific racism has provided reinforcement for maintaining the status quo. Researchers who sought to discover and explain racial difference in intelligence generally operated from a functionalist or social facts paradigm. Gilbert Gonzalez shows that “Racism was essentially an ideological explanation for the social structure, and did not affect the distribution of property, but rationalized that distribution.“ In sum, scientific racism indicated that the social structure was based on the genetic make-up of racial categories.

Nuclear Envelope Proteins: Chemical Characteristics And Molecular Interactions Of The Lamins, David Lee Cochran

The lamins are a group of proteins in a residual nuclear envelope fraction derived from the nuclear lamina. The absence of specific functional assays for the two predominant species, lamin A and lamin B, has complicated their biochemical characterization. Initial studies reported in this work involved the enzymic cleavage of isolated lamins A and B and another lamina protein with a molecular weight of 61,000-daltons. The results obtained with each of three enzymes indicated strong similarities between the three nuclear envelope proteins.

The application of electrochemical techniques to biological systems has become an attractive method for characterizing the redox and electron transfer behavior of biomacromolecules. This study focuses on the role of soluble spinach ferredoxin (Fd) in photosynthesis where it functions as an electron carrier to membrane bound species in the plant chloroplast. An electrochemical model is used where in Fd now serves as a soluble redox species which undergoes oxidation and reduction via electron transfer at an electrode. This type of model is significant in that both the membrane and electrode reactive sites are characterized by charged bilayer interfacial regions which …

Effects Of Pulsed Electric Fields On Mammalian Cell Membranes, Guy K. Smith

The effect of pulsed electric fields on cell membranes were studied to investigate the effects of an electric field, per se, on biological systems, without the densometric and other technical problems associated with other forms of nonionizing radiation. Exposure of mouse splenocytes to a high voltage pulse resulted in an increase in membrane permeability to K⁺ that was dependent on both the electric field strength and the pulse duration. Exposure to a 2 μsec, 3.0 kV/cm pulse elicited a 50% loss of intracellular K⁺ indicating that the critical transmembrane potential (V_m) at breakdown was 1.26 volts …

Current research suggests that there is some relationship between developmental variables, levels of career maturity and career decisions. In this study, the relationships between certain developmental factors and the degree of certainty expressed by college students about their decision to major in a field of study were explored. The variables included the student's decision making stage, decision making styles, levels of autonomy and interpersonal relationships, and degree of career maturity. Meanwhile, many first experiences of these children with the state came in the form of educational research. Interfacial Electrochemistry Of Cytochrome C And Myoglobin, Edmond F. Bowden

The interfacial electrochemistry of horse heart cytochrome c was studied at metal and metal oxide electrodes. Sperm whale myoglobin reactions at metal oxide and surface modified electrodes were also investigated. Emphasis was on the measurement and mechanistic interpretation of the heterogeneous electron transfer kinetic parameters for these electrode reactions.

The motivation for this study stems from the fact that some electron transfer proteins, e.g., cytochrome c, transfer electrons heterogeneously in physiological systems. Specific electrodes may, therefore, serve as suitable models for physiological surfaces. Electrode and membrane interfaces are both electrically charged and both have oriented hydration water layers.
