Educational Research Abstracts, G. Bass Jr.
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Editors' Note: As noted in previous issues of the Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations, the purpose of this Educational Research Abstract section is to present current published research on issues relevant to math and science teaching at both the K-12 and college levels. Because educational research articles are published in so many different academic journals, it is a rare public school teacher or college professor who reads all the recent published reports on a particular instructional technique or curricular advancement. Indeed, the uniqueness of various pedagogical strategies has been tacitly acknowledged by the creation of individual journals dedicated …

Attitudes In Physics Education: An Alternative Approach To Teaching Physics To Non-Science College Students, V. A. Niculescu, J. P. Chinnici, B. L. Brown
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
In this article, we present an alternative way of teaching conceptual physics for non-science majors by depicting the role of physics in today's technology. The goal of this approach is to increase in the minds of non-science students the acceptance of physics as a useful component in general education, and as a major tool in comprehending the present-day technological world experienced by students outside the classroom.
Combining Theory And Practice In The Teaching Of Science Institutions: A Collaborative Program Between The City University Of New York And The American Museum Of Natural History, F. Espinoza
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
The National Science Education Standards contain several mandates that share the use of alternative and creative experiences in the teaching of science at all levels. An important feature of these standards is the call for learning settings and environments different from the traditional classroom in order to enhance student interest and participation in the learning process. New York City is rich in institutions that are ideal for the implementation of effective science teaching through the use of informal resources. This article uses the American Museum of Natural History as a prime example of this.
Functional Characterization Of Mitogen-Dependent And Self-Perpetuating Nb2 Lymphoma Cell Lines, Charlotte Cockrell
Functional Characterization Of Mitogen-Dependent And Self-Perpetuating Nb2 Lymphoma Cell Lines, Charlotte Cockrell
Theses and Dissertations
This investigation involved the functional characterization of four Nb2 sub lines (Nb2-U- 17, Nb2-l l , SFJCD l , and D5) for their mitogenic and apoptotic responses to DEX ± PRL treatment. Many protein factors have been implicated to be crucial in controlling the apoptotic and mitogenic pathways. In conjunction with functional studies, an immunocytochemical investigation of four protein signals (NFKB, IKBa, STAT 5b, and the GR) was undertaken in an attempt to establish a relationship between the functional responsiveness of a given cell line and the concentration of a particular protein marker. Comparison of the functional data obtained for …
Studies On The Role Creb As A Mediator Of Neurotrophin-3 Actions In Oligodendrocytes, Jamie Richard Johnson
Studies On The Role Creb As A Mediator Of Neurotrophin-3 Actions In Oligodendrocytes, Jamie Richard Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
In the central nervous system (CNS), oligodendrocytes (OLGs) are the cells responsible for producing the myelin membrane which allows for the saltatory conduction of neuronal impulses. We have previously shown that CREB (cAMP response element binding protein), a transcription factor that belongs to a large family bZip (basic leucine zipper) proteins, could be a mediator of neuronal signals that, coupled to different signal transduction pathways, may play different regulatory roles at specific stages of oligodendrocyte development. We have found before that, in committed OLGs, CREB activation by phosphorylation can be triggered by β-adrenergic stimulation and appears to play a role …

Examination Of Student-Active Learning Practices In A College/Middle School Educational Collaboration, S. Prattis, I. Czerwiec
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
A college and middle school student teaching collaboration was developed to interest more college students in teaching K-12 science, to enhance diversity among K-16 teaching faculties, and to inspire the K-12 students to expand their knowledge beyond their classroom curriculum. To assess our results, we used a modified Likert survey instrument and self-reflective analysis in middle school and college students, respectively. Overall, middle school students expressed satisfaction in the science learning in which they participated. In addition, college students reported that they learned specific content when made responsible for teaching material to younger students. Collaborative projects such as this one …

The Stcc Science Teaching Intern Project, N. Rapoport
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
The Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) Science Teaching Intern Project was implemented as a pilot study to give community college students an opportunity to experience science teaching. At the same time, it provided seventh graders in inner city middle schools opportunities to interact with college students and to take advantage of science resources not usually available to them. Interns attended weekly meetings and participated in an all-day science field trip at the college. Most participants also made observations in a middle school science classroom and presented a science activity in the classroom. Not only did the project provide a partnership …
Project- And Group-Based Learning Of Junior Writing In Biology, J. G. Kunkel
Project- And Group-Based Learning Of Junior Writing In Biology, J. G. Kunkel
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Writing in Biology, part of the Junior Writing Program, is inherently a project-based learning course. After a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Teacher Education Collaborative (STEMTEC) workshop, the course was thoroughly revised. Each of six projects was modified to increase student-active and group participation. Base groups with a balanced experience constitution are established using voluntary ordering and random assignment. A walk-around during the initial meeting serves to establish bonding within the base groups. Random groups are used within exercises to stimulate student interaction and familiarity with ad hoc group cooperation. Digital images of, and by, students are used to encourage …

Mathematics In Hands-On Science For Liberal Arts Students, M. I. Sobel
Mathematics In Hands-On Science For Liberal Arts Students, M. I. Sobel
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
We describe a number of experiments from the courses called, General Science 9, part of the science program for elementary education majors at Brooklyn College. These courses provide hands-on learning experiences for students who are insecure and weak in science and mathematics. Quantitative thinking is a central element in most of the students’ work. Mathematics is taught in a concrete and intuitive way, as a direct outgrowth of their needs; first, in analysis of data, and second, in discovering underlying theory. The science program has been developed through cooperation among faculty from the School of Education and the science departments.
Active Learning In Sophomore Mathematics: A Cautionary Tale, M. Eisenberg
Active Learning In Sophomore Mathematics: A Cautionary Tale, M. Eisenberg
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Math 245: Multivariate Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations with Computer I is the first half of a year-long sophomore sequence that emphasizes the subjects' interconnections and grounding in real-world applications. The sequence is aimed primarily at students from physical and mathematical sciences and engineering. In Fall, 1998, as a result of my affiliation with the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Teacher Education Collaborative (STEMTEC), I continued and extended previously-introduced reforms in Math 245, including: motivating mathematical ideas with real-world phenomena; student use of computer technology; and, learning by discovery and experimentation. I also introduced additional pedagogical strategies for more …

The teachers in the course E36.1002: Microcomputer Applications in Math and Science Instruction in the Department of Teaching & Learning at New York University developed a four-week curriculum that integrates math, science, and technology using a common theme chosen by the teachers. The program has received very positive feedback from all participants and may be expanded in the future. Some recommendations are provided on how field experience in teaching with technology can be …
Bridging The Gap Between Schools And Non-Formal Science Institutions: Using New York City's Non-Formal Resources To Teach Science, P. Fraser-Abder
Bridging The Gap Between Schools And Non-Formal Science Institutions: Using New York City's Non-Formal Resources To Teach Science, P. Fraser-Abder
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Effective science teaching and learning needs to take place in an environment in which the formal and non-formal worlds of science combine their expertise and resources. Science learning and ultimately, scientific literacy for all depends on the teaching that occurs both in schools and in non-formal settings. As we move towards the attainment of scientific literacy for all, it is becoming more imperative that we recognize and utilize the media, industry education programs, non-formal science centers, museums, and other science learning outlets as valuable segments of our nation’s science education infrastructure. This paper describes the context, rationale, and outline of …

An Introduction To Stemtec And "Pathways To Change", C. D'Avanzo, R. F. Yuretich
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
STEMTEC is the Massachusetts Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation. The first step in preparing future teachers is to have them experience effective teaching in college science and mathematics courses. The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Teacher Education Collaborative (STEMTEC) summer institutes familiarized 150 faculty members with a variety of teaching strategies recommended in the National Science Teaching Standards. These faculty incorporated the techniques into one or more of their courses during subsequent academic years, and many of them reported on their progress during a research conference, "Pathways to Change," which STEMTEC sponsored in the summer of 2000. Eleven papers, …
Languages And Postmodern Ethnic Identities, Livia Käthe Wittmann
Languages And Postmodern Ethnic Identities, Livia Käthe Wittmann
Ethnic Studies Review
Specific discourses of our mother tongue (which is not always our mother's tongue) are supposed to decisively constitute our subjectivity. These discourses which are constituting us and are available to us offer possible identities. These identities carry ethno-culturally-specific meanings, which are symbolised within and by spoken, written, and non-verbal language/s. Are languages given the same relevance when giving meaning to postmodern ethnicity, if one understands postmodern ethnicity as a "stance of simultaneously transcending ethnicity as a complete, self-contained system but retaining it as a selectively preferred, evolving, participatory system?" Multilinguality, as it may correspond with aspects of postmodern ethnicity, seems …
Distinctive Features Of The African-American Family: Debunking The Myth Of The Deficit Model, David L. Briscoe
Distinctive Features Of The African-American Family: Debunking The Myth Of The Deficit Model, David L. Briscoe
Ethnic Studies Review
Throughout the 1900's, social scientists have debated the question of whether the African American family is an adaptative social system or whether it is pathological, perpetuating its poverty over the generations. This article examines the holistic perspective as the preeminent comprehensive approach in studying the African American family and provides empirical evidence of distinctive features of the African American family in support of the adaptation argument. The adaptation/deficit debate will probably continue as long as the scientific community fails to fully acknowledge and make the most of theoretical constructs that are holistic in principle and design.
