VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Effect Of Ceftazidime On Systemic Cytokine Concentrations In Rats, Khalid M. Alkharfy, John A. Kellum, Reginald F. Frye, Gary R. Matzke

The effect of a single dose of ceftazidime on circulating concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in a rat model of sepsis was studied. IL-6 concentrations were significantly elevated (100 to 200 times the baseline) 6 h after ceftazidime administration in both septic and nonseptic (control) rats. TNF-α concentrations increased significantly in nonseptic (∼40 times the baseline) rats but not septic (∼2 to 3 times the baseline) rats. Ceftazidime administration was not associated with an increase in endotoxin concentrations. These findings suggest that ceftazidime modulation of proinflammatory cytokine concentrations may be independent of its antimicrobial properties.

Telomerase is a cellular enzyme that helps to provide genomic stability in tumor cells by maintaining the integrity of telomeres. Telomerase is an RNA-dependent DNA polymerase that contains a protein component (hTERT) and an associated RNA (hTR), which is used as a template for telomere repeat addition. Telomerase activity, while not detectable in most normal human somatic cells, is associated with approximately 85% of malignant human cancers overall, including over 90% of breast cancers.

We have optimized a novel, quantitative, high-throughput telomerase activity assay using fluorescently labelled primers and Real Time quantitation via the ABI Prism 7700 (a.k.a., the TaqMan). …

Experimental And Theoretical Study Of The Photoelectron Spectra Of Mnox-(X=1-3) Clusters, Gennady L. Gutsev, B. K. Rao, P. Jena, Xi Li, Lai-Sheng Wang

Physics Publications

We report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of MnO−x and MnOx(x=1–3) clusters. Theoretically, geometrical configurations of various isomers of the clusters were optimized and vertical detachment energies for the anions were evaluated. The ground state of MnO− was predicted to be 5Σ+, followed by an excited state (7Σ+) 0.14 eV higher in energy. The ground state of MnO−2 is 5B2, with a 3B1 isomer 0.15 eV higher. MnO−3 is predicted to be a singlet D3h cluster. Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra of MnO−x were measured at several photon energies and under various experimental conditions, and were interpreted based on the …
