Multicultural Education Professional Development: A Review Of The Literature, Hillary Parkhouse, Virginia R. Massaro, Chu Yi Lu Qiu Jan 2019

Multicultural Education Professional Development: A Review Of The Literature, Hillary Parkhouse, Virginia R. Massaro, Chu Yi Lu Qiu

Teaching and Learning Publications

When their teachers are well equipped to foster inclusive and equitable classrooms, students from marginalized communities show higher rates of academic achievement, motivation, self-confidence, and self-efficacy. However, many teachers complete preparation programs feeling underprepared to work in culturally diverse classrooms, making high-quality professional development in this area crucial. We undertook a meta-ethnographic, systematic literature review of 40 studies of multicultural-education-focused professional development programs in order to better understand the forms and features of such programs that contribute to teachers’ self-efficacy and success in working with culturally diverse students. We found a small literature base with too much variation across types …

Single-Molecule Analysis Of I-Motif Within Self-Assembled Dna Duplexes And Nanocircles, Anoja Megalathan, Bobby D. Cox, Peter D. Wilkerson, Anisa Kaur, Kumar Sapkota, Joseph E. Reiner, Soma Dhakal Jan 2019

Single-Molecule Analysis Of I-Motif Within Self-Assembled Dna Duplexes And Nanocircles, Anoja Megalathan, Bobby D. Cox, Peter D. Wilkerson, Anisa Kaur, Kumar Sapkota, Joseph E. Reiner, Soma Dhakal

Chemistry Publications

The cytosine (C)-rich sequences that can fold into tetraplex structures known as i-motif are prevalent in genomic DNA. Recent studies of i-motif–forming sequences have shown increasing evidence of their roles in gene regulation. However, most of these studies have been performed in short single-stranded oligonucleotides, far from the intracellular environment. In cells, i-motif–forming sequences are flanked by DNA duplexes and packed in the genome. Therefore, exploring the conformational dynamics and kinetics of i-motif under such topologically constrained environments is highly relevant in predicting their biological roles. Using single-molecule fluorescence analysis of self-assembled DNA duplexes and nanocircles, we show that the …

Roberts, Naren Gajenthra Kumar, Ramesh Natarajan, Bernard J. Fisher, Kevin Leslie, Jason Reed, Amir A. Toor, Dayanjan S. Wijesinghe

Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science Publications

The clinical outcome of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT) may be influenced by the metabolic status of the recipient following conditioning, which in turn may enable risk stratification with respect to the development of transplant-associated complications such as graft vs. host disease (GVHD). To better understand the impact of the metabolic profile of transplant recipients on post-transplant alloreactivity, we investigated the metabolic signature of 14 patients undergoing myeloablative conditioning followed by either human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched related or unrelated donor SCT, or autologous SCT. Blood samples were taken following conditioning and prior to transplant on day 0 and the …

Habitat‐Dependent Occupancy And Movement In A Migrant Songbird Highlights The Importance Of Mangroves And Forested Lagoons In Panama And Colombia, Lesley Bulluck, Elizabeth Ames, Nicholas Bayly, Jessie Reese, Cathy Viverette, James Wright, Angela Caguazango, Christopher Tonra

Environmental Studies Publications

Climate change is predicted to impact tropical mangrove forests due to decreased rainfall, sea‐level rise, and increased seasonality of flooding. Such changes are likely to influence habitat quality for migratory songbirds occupying mangrove wetlands during the tropical dry season. Overwintering habitat quality is known to be associated with fitness in migratory songbirds, yet studies have focused primarily on territorial species. Little is known about the ecology of nonterritorial species that may display more complex movement patterns within and among habitats of differing quality. In this study, we assess within‐season survival and movement at two spatio‐temporal scales of a nonterritorial overwintering …

Interaction Of Seed Dispersal And Environmental Filtering Affects Woody Encroachment Patterns In Coastal Grassland, Natasha N. Woods, Benjamin L. Dows, Evan B. Goldstein, Laura J. Moore, Donald R. Young, Julie C. Zinnert Jan 2019

Interaction Of Seed Dispersal And Environmental Filtering Affects Woody Encroachment Patterns In Coastal Grassland, Natasha N. Woods, Benjamin L. Dows, Evan B. Goldstein, Laura J. Moore, Donald R. Young, Julie C. Zinnert

Biology Publications

Encroachment of woody plants into grasslands has occurred worldwide and includes coastal ecosystems. This conversion process is mediated by seed dispersal patterns, environmental filtering, and biotic interactions. As spatiotemporally heterogeneous, harsh environments, barrier islands present a unique set of challenges for dispersal and establishment. Environmental conditions act as filters on dispersed seeds, thereby influencing encroachment and distribution patterns. Seldom have patterns of propagule dispersal been considered in the context of woody encroachment. We quantified dispersal and post‐dispersal processes of an encroaching woody population of Morella cerifera relative to directional rate of encroachment and observed distribution patterns on an Atlantic coastal …

Periodontics Publications

Background
When implants are restored with cement-retained restorations, prosthetic retrievability can be difficult and often requires sectioning using rotary instruments. Sometimes repeated removals of a cement-retained implant crown are needed such as for treatment of peri-implantitis or immediate implant provisionalization. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser as a non-invasive treatment modality to remove lithium disilicate crowns from zirconia implant abutments following long-term cementation, repetitive debonding and re-cementation, and short-term retrieval.

Material and methods
Twenty identical lithium disilicate crowns were cemented onto zirconia prefabricated abutments using composite resin cement. Ten …

Coherent Vibrational And Dissociation Dynamics Of Polyatomic Radical Cations, Katharine M. Tibbetts Jan 2019

Coherent Vibrational And Dissociation Dynamics Of Polyatomic Radical Cations, Katharine M. Tibbetts

Chemistry Publications

The ultrafast dynamics of polyatomic radical cat- ions contribute to important processes including energy transfer in photovoltaics, electron transfer in photocataly- sis, radiation-induced DNA damage, and chemical reac- tions in the upper atmosphere and space. Probing these dynamics in the gas phase is challenging due to the rapid dissociation of polyatomic radical cations following elec- tron removal, which arises from excess electronic excita- tion of the molecule during the ionization process. This Concept article introduces the reader to how the pump- probe technique of femtosecond time-resolved mass spectrometry (FTRMS) can overcome this challenge to capture coherent vibrational dynamics on the …

Probing Coherent Vibrations Of Organic Phosphonate Radical Cations With Femtosecond Time-Resolved Mass Spectrometry, Derrick Ampadu Boateng, Mi'kayla D. Word, Katharine M. Tibbetts

Chemistry Publications

Organic phosphates and phosphonates are present in a number of cellular components that can be damaged by exposure to ionizing radiation. This work reports femtosecond time-resolved mass spectrometry (FTRMS) studies of three organic phosphonate radical cations that model the DNA sugar-phosphate backbone: dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), diethyl methylphosphonate (DEMP), and diisopropyl methylphosphonate (DIMP). Upon ionization, each molecular radical cation exhibits unique oscillatory dynamics in its ion yields resulting from coherent vibrational excitation. DMMP has particularly well-resolved 45 fs (732 ± 28 cm−1) oscillations with a weak feature at 610–650 cm−1, while DIMP exhibits bimodal oscillations with a period of ∼55 fs …

Explainable Neural Networks Based Anomaly Detection For Cyber-Physical Systems, Kasun Amarasinghe Jan 2019

Explainable Neural Networks Based Anomaly Detection For Cyber-Physical Systems, Kasun Amarasinghe

Theses and Dissertations

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) are the core of modern critical infrastructure (e.g. power-grids) and securing them is of paramount importance. Anomaly detection in data is crucial for CPS security. While Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are strong candidates for the task, they are seldom deployed in safety-critical domains due to the perception that ANNs are black-boxes. Therefore, to leverage ANNs in CPSs, cracking open the black box through explanation is essential.

The main objective of this dissertation is developing explainable ANN-based Anomaly Detection Systems for Cyber-Physical Systems (CP-ADS). The main objective was broken down into three sub-objectives: 1) Identifying key-requirements that an …

Applications Of Chemically Modified Nitrogen Doped Carbon, Zirconium Phosphate, Metal Organic Frameworks, And Functionalized Graphene Oxide Nanostructured Adsorbents In Water Treatment, Ayyob Mohammed A Bakry Jan 2019

Applications Of Chemically Modified Nitrogen Doped Carbon, Zirconium Phosphate, Metal Organic Frameworks, And Functionalized Graphene Oxide Nanostructured Adsorbents In Water Treatment, Ayyob Mohammed A Bakry

Theses and Dissertations

Water contaminations by many pollutants, especially heavy metals such as Pb(II), Hg(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), and Cr(VI) pose many public health and environmental concerns as reported in the list of hazardous substances compiled by the US Environmental Protection Agency due to their high toxicity, refractory degradation, and ease of entering food chain. Adsorption by chelating resins is proven to be the most effective method for the extraction of metal ions from polluted and wastewater. However, traditional absorbents such as activated carbon, activated alumina, clay, zeolite, etc., show limited adsorption abilities for these heavy metal ions. The major goal of this thesis …

Carbon Cycling Along The James River Continuum, Timothy B. Jones Jan 2019

Carbon Cycling Along The James River Continuum, Timothy B. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Fluvial systems act as conduits for terrestrial carbon transport to coastal oceans. However, riverine systems not only transport allochthonous carbon, they transform and store carbon in many different ways. The different mechanisms of transformation and storage need to be considered for fluvial systems in order to accurately account for modifications to the carbon pool when developing carbon budgets. Of interest was to investigate the carbon dynamics in the James River, in Virginia, from headwaters to the tidal fresh estuary to gain a better understanding of carbon dynamics along the continuum. Sites along the river continuum were sampled for dissolved organic …

Touched With All The Radiance That A Sudden Sun Discloses, Marie Fornaro Jan 2019

Touched With All The Radiance That A Sudden Sun Discloses, Marie Fornaro

Theses and Dissertations

The thread running through my work is a constant impulse to rend and repair; to make, unmake, and remake. This repetitive and circular approach allows me to confront the cyclical nature of gendered oppression. What does it mean to make something beautiful and then to dismantle it? How do we reckon with the pieces that remain? By deconstructing the beautiful and lovingly crafted objects that I spend hours making, I recenter “craft” as a verb rather than a noun, forcing myself and my audience to resist the comforting illusion of certainty.

I contextualize my piecework and quilting in a long …

Trauma Related Drinking To Cope: A Phenotypic And Molecular Genetic Investigation Of The Self-Medication Model, Sage E. Hawn Jan 2019

Trauma Related Drinking To Cope: A Phenotypic And Molecular Genetic Investigation Of The Self-Medication Model, Sage E. Hawn

Theses and Dissertations

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use problems (AUP) commonly co-occur, have shared latent genetic risk, and are associated with many negative public health outcomes. Via a self-medication framework, trauma-related drinking to cope (TRD), an unexplored construct to date, may help explain why these two disorders co-occur, thus serving as an essential target for treatment and prevention efforts. The present study aimed to create a novel measure of TRD and examine its psychometric properties, investigate its indirect influences on the association between PTSD and AUP, as well as explore its potential shared molecular genetic risk with PTSD in a genetically-informative …

The Anaplasma Phagocytophilum Adhesin Asp14 Directs Pdi-Mediated Disulfide Reduction To Promote Infection, Ryan S. Green Jan 2019

The Anaplasma Phagocytophilum Adhesin Asp14 Directs Pdi-Mediated Disulfide Reduction To Promote Infection, Ryan S. Green

Theses and Dissertations

Obligate intracellular pathogens must invade host cells to survive and pose a global health risk. As such, internalization is a critical life stage and represents an excellent therapeutic target. Oxidoreductase exploitation is a thematic invasion strategy among obligate intracellular pathogens. Delineating the mechanisms and proteins mediating this exploitation could identify novel therapeutic targets for many important pathogens. Anaplasma phagocytophilum infects neutrophils by an incompletely defined mechanism, resulting in the emerging potentially fatal disease, human granulocytic anaplasmosis. The bacterial adhesin, Asp14, contributes to invasion by virtue of its C-terminus engaging an unknown receptor. Yeast two-hybrid analysis identified protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) …

Regorafenib Enhances Lethality Of Sildenafil And Curcumin In Colorectal Cancer Cells, Kervin Benjamin Owusu Jan 2019

Regorafenib Enhances Lethality Of Sildenafil And Curcumin In Colorectal Cancer Cells, Kervin Benjamin Owusu

Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, more than 130,000 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC) each year and an estimated 50,000 people will die from the disease. Standard of care (SOC) therapies for CRC combine multiple cytotoxic chemotherapeutic drugs. These combinations have varying degrees of effectiveness and can often result in significant patient morbidity. For second recurrence patients, the multi-kinase inhibitor, regorafenib, is an approved agent, but is often poorly tolerated at current doses. In the current study, we propose to develop therapeutic regime of combining agents with modest toxicity profiles: curcumin and sildenafil with regorafenib. Using clinically achievable enterohepatic …

Pharmacologic Profiling Of Novel Compounds Via Fluorometric Analyses Of Monoamine Transporter Responses, Ashkhan Hojati Jan 2019

Pharmacologic Profiling Of Novel Compounds Via Fluorometric Analyses Of Monoamine Transporter Responses, Ashkhan Hojati

Theses and Dissertations

In humans and other organisms, monoaminergic systems are crucial in neuronal function and behavior. The monoamine transporters (MATs), which can be found on the presynaptic plasma membrane of neurons in the central nervous system (CNS), are crucial in the regulation of neurotransmitter concentration in the synaptic cleft. As the duration and concentration of neurotransmitters in the cleft affect further downstream signaling responses, these proteins are important targets for both understanding neuronal physiology and compounds of interest. Multiple theories exist proponing the contribution of MATs to a variety of mental and neurological disorders, including depression. This theory establishes that depression is …

Inhibition Of Cancer Stem Cells By Glycosaminoglycan Mimetics, Connor P. O'Hara Jan 2019

Inhibition Of Cancer Stem Cells By Glycosaminoglycan Mimetics, Connor P. O'Hara

Theses and Dissertations

Connor O’Hara July 29, 2019

Inhibition of Cancer Stem Cells by Glycosaminoglycan Mimetics

In the United States cancer is the second leading cause of death, with colorectal cancer (CRC) being the third deadliest cancer and expected to cause over 51,000 fatalities in 2019 alone.1 The current standard of care for CRC depends largely on the staging, location, and presence of metastasis.2 As the tumor grows and invades nearby lymph tissue and blood vessels, CRC has the opportunity to invade not only nearby tissue but also metastasize into the liver and lung (most commonly).3 The 5-year survival rate …

Factors Influencing Parental Care And Home Range Size Of A Monomorphic Species, The Red-Headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes Erythrocephalus), L. Abigail Walter Jan 2019

Factors Influencing Parental Care And Home Range Size Of A Monomorphic Species, The Red-Headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes Erythrocephalus), L. Abigail Walter

Theses and Dissertations

Parental care in animals can be costly and is shared between both parents in many bird species. Not surprisingly, most studies of how parental care is shared between the sexes are in sexually dimorphic species, and much less in known about sexually monomorphic species where sex cannot be determined in the field. This has prevented a full understanding of parental care behaviors – which are intrinsically linked to fitness – in species such as the Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) that is experiencing population declines throughout much of its range. In this study we assessed whether Redheaded Woodpecker brooding time, nestling …

Role Of Glial Ccr5 In Mediating Hiv-1 Tat And Opiate Neurotoxicity And Behavioral Phenotype, Sarah Kim Jan 2019

Role Of Glial Ccr5 In Mediating Hiv-1 Tat And Opiate Neurotoxicity And Behavioral Phenotype, Sarah Kim

Theses and Dissertations

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) persists in certain CNS cell populations, despite peripheral control of the infection with modern antiretroviral therapy. Infected and/or activated cells release viral proteins, such as trans-activator of transcription (Tat) and various pro-inflammatory factors such as CCL5, creating a positive loop of neuro-inflammation. This serves as the basis for the resulting sublethal and lethal neuropathology that manifests as a spectrum of HIV-mediated CNS impairments, known as HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Opiates, which exist as an interlinked epidemic with HIV-1 infections, exacerbate these neurological effects through direct and indirect mechanisms that disrupt both glial and neuronal …

Structural Determinants Of High Potency Mdpv Inhibition Of The Dopamine Transporter, Tyler Steele Jan 2019

Structural Determinants Of High Potency Mdpv Inhibition Of The Dopamine Transporter, Tyler Steele

Theses and Dissertations

Monoamine transporters (MATs) are a unique group of neurotransmitter transporters that include the dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine transporters (DAT, SERT, and NET, respectively). MATs are a target for a number of licit and illicit compounds. The significance of this work lies in the fact that these transporters share affinity for certain ligands to varying degrees, but the structural features within the transporters that govern the observed selectivity for these ligands has not been completely determined. One such ligand is methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), which was frequently found in “bath salts” preparations that were available in convenience stores and were sold with “not …

The Role Of Psychosocial And Health Behavioral Factors In Pregnancy Induced Hypertension, Sylvia Sreeparna Rozario Jan 2019

The Role Of Psychosocial And Health Behavioral Factors In Pregnancy Induced Hypertension, Sylvia Sreeparna Rozario

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) is the leading cause of maternal mortality and a major contributor to preterm birth and neonatal mortality. Literature suggests that several modifiable psychosocial and health behavioral factors may play significant roles in the development of PIH. However, interrelationships among these factors and their collective impact on PIH are not well understood.

Objectives: This study aims to: 1) Examine the relationship between pre-pregnancy physical activity and risk of PIH, 2) Determine the association between prepregnancy depression and PIH and the role of race/ethnicity in this association, 3) Evaluate the association between intimate partner violence (IPV) in …

Conceptualization Of Body Image And Eating Disorders Among South Asian American Women: A Qualitative Investigation, Neha J. Goel Jan 2019

Conceptualization Of Body Image And Eating Disorders Among South Asian American Women: A Qualitative Investigation, Neha J. Goel

Theses and Dissertations

Though it is known that eating disorders (EDs) affect individuals of all racial/ethnic backgrounds (Cheng, Perko, Fuller-Marashi, Gau, & Stice, 2019), people of color tend to be overlooked in the ED literature. South Asian Americans, a specific subset of individuals traditionally categorized within the larger umbrella group of “Asians,” have been notoriously neglected in both the broader mental health literature, and in the ED literature (Inman, Devdas, Spektor, & Pendse, 2014; Iyer & Haslam, 2003, 2006). Currently, very little information exists on the etiology and presentation of EDs amongst South Asian communities. Even less is known about culturally-specific barriers to …
