[Review Of] Pamela Mordecai And Mervyn Morris, Eds. Jamaica Woman : An Anthology Of Poems, Faythe Turner
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The history of the Americas, one first of imperialism, second of slavery, is one of which we are aware. Whether accepted or rejected, the colonial heritage has had a hypnotizing effect on many writers in this hemisphere as is abundantly displayed in this anthology, Jamaica Women. The major part of the poetry here is social protest or "message" poetry as opposed to that involved in the structure of language, although we do find both in the surprising variety of subjects considered, some personal-love, family-others cultural and collective-nature, freedom, poverty, work, strength or lack of it. The best of these poems …
[Review Of] Donald B. Smith. Long Lance: The True Story Of An Impostor, Lyle Koehler
[Review Of] Donald B. Smith. Long Lance: The True Story Of An Impostor, Lyle Koehler
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In the 1920s, Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance, reputedly a Blood (or Blackfoot) Indian, was the talk of New York City. A graduate of Carlisle Indian School, a cadet at West Point, a war hero, and a sparring mate for Jack Dempsey, Long Lance was the American Indian made good. He was a journalist of some renown, an eloquent speaker, and a self ordained "spokesman for the Indians of America." Before the decade was finished he had written a highly popular autobiography of his life on the Canadian Plains, actually chased off wolves and speared a moose for his role …
[Review Of] Michael Anthony. All That Glitters, Laverne GonzáLez
[Review Of] Michael Anthony. All That Glitters, Laverne GonzáLez
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The Trinidadian, Michael Anthony, gives us yet another novel, having previously published The Year in San Fernando, Green Days by the River, The Games Were Coming, Streets of Conflict and a collection of short stories, Cricket in the Road. For this novel, he has drawn heavily on the native elements of Trinidad and Tobago. Interestingly enough, the political situation plays only a minor role in the novel, unlike the works of other Caribbean authors like George Lamming and V. S. Naipaul, for example.
National Certification As A Performance Measure: Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, 1977-1982, Barbara Hall Dunn
National Certification As A Performance Measure: Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, 1977-1982, Barbara Hall Dunn
Theses and Dissertations
This research involved an analysis of data for 3,387 candidates who took the National Qualifying Examination for pediatric nurse practitioners/associates between 1977 and 1982. Those data were available from the National Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Associates, which administers the examination, and its testing agency, the National Board of Medical Examiners. Included in the data were sociodemographic characteristics of examinees, characteristics of their nurse practitioner educational programs, and their composite examination scores.
The purpose of the research was to determine the ability of these sociodemographic and educational program variables to predict examination performance. Sociodemographic variables included: examinee age; highest …
Art Education And The Social Use Of Metaphor, Nancy R. Johnson
Art Education And The Social Use Of Metaphor, Nancy R. Johnson
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Human beings are greatly dependent upon social knowledge as a basis for directing their actions in the world and interpreting the actions of others. The dominant quality of social knowledge, or culture, is that it is symbolic. Consider the concept of culture offered by anthropologist Clifford Geertz: "(Cultura) denotes a historically transmitted pattern of meanings embodied in symbols, a system of inherited conceptions expressed in symbolic forms by means of which men communicate, perpetuate, and develop their knowledge about and attitudes toward life".

Critique [Of Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual By Kristin Herzog], Karl J. Reinhardt
Critique [Of Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual By Kristin Herzog], Karl J. Reinhardt
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The value of Herzog's study, in addition to the factual information presented, is a tragic reminder of two interrelated truths: 1) by studying history we could learn how to make a better world in which to live; and, 2) we do not learn from history. The women's movement of recent years has two aspects which do not, for all times, go together. One moving force in its genesis is the demand that physical and emotional abuse and misuse of women by men cease. The other, not necessarily related to the first, is that of equal status, which includes equal access …

Change In American Indian World Views Illustrated By Oral Narratives And Contemporary Poetry, Silvester J. Brito
Change In American Indian World Views Illustrated By Oral Narratives And Contemporary Poetry, Silvester J. Brito
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Unlike other ethnic groups, American Indians had little to celebrate during the bicentennial year in 1976. Other ethnic groups, with the exception of blacks and Mexican Americans, came to America to find a better way of life.[1] In contrast, few American Indians have left this country in search of a better life elsewhere. Hence, being an oppressed minority in a society governed by Western thought and values, Indians can only lament the loss of their rights to live and govern their lives according to particular religious, cultural, and social values, for they have been forced to change world views and …
The Lone Ranger Lied: Tonto Wasn't Real, Lee Hadley
The Lone Ranger Lied: Tonto Wasn't Real, Lee Hadley
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Whenever Hadley Irwin speaks to school children or to adults, for that matter, someone always asks, "Did the things in the book really happen to you? Are the characters in your books real people?" Writing is full of bits and pieces of the past, but what goes on paper is an amalgam of thousands of things, consciously and unconsciously remembered-experiences, overheard conversations, stories, imagined events. For a child, at least this writer as a child, all things had equal validity; all were equally true, even though she finally learned that growing up was a mixture of reality and myth.

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
On a visit to the Mesquakie Settlement during May of this year, one elder told me that there were too many distractions for the children to fully comprehend the traditions as she had learned them as a child. As I reflected on her comments, I realized that she truly had cause for alarm: Although Mesquakies have contended with many, many great pressures since their removal and return to Iowa during the last century, they have only in recent history had to contend with the all-pervasive power of television to create, destroy, distort, form, mold, and shape images of reality -- …

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
In an attempt to record a sense of the formal sessions of the 1984 Conference, we asked the Chairs to assemble abstracts and discussant comments for their sessions. Although we are pleased with a response greater than in 1983, we are aiming for one hundred percent in 1985.
Critique [Of Perception And Power Through Naming: Characters In Search Of Self In The Fiction Of Toni Morrison By Linda Buck Myers], Neil Nakadate
Critique [Of Perception And Power Through Naming: Characters In Search Of Self In The Fiction Of Toni Morrison By Linda Buck Myers], Neil Nakadate
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
In "Stranger in the Village" (1953), James Baldwin asserted that "the root function of language is to control the universe by describing it." In her article on naming in Toni Morrison's novels, Linda Buck Myers asks us to consider Morrison's insights regarding who does the controlling and how. In the end Myers offers us a number of useful and provocative observations regarding language and our uses of it as they inform ethnic experience.
Ethnicity And Empowerment: Implications For Psychological Training In The 1980s, Linda M.C. Abbott
Ethnicity And Empowerment: Implications For Psychological Training In The 1980s, Linda M.C. Abbott
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Psychological services, as a part of the health-care system, have been "embedded in specific configurations of cultural meanings and social relationships,"[1] and the role of patients and healers cannot be understood apart from that context. This article explores the failure of psychology to effectively address the inhibiting impact of racism on human development, and it suggests a corrective agenda for the training of socially responsive and responsible psychologists, an agenda derived from the literacy education model of Paulo Freire.

"Haudenosaunee," you say? "And how do you spell that?" I asked. That was my response to Thadodahho at Onondaga in the summer of 1983 as he raised my consciousness about the name Iroquois as used by the French and the name Haudenosaunee as the People name themselves.

Critique [Of Perception And Power Through Naming: Characters In Search Of Self In The Fiction Of Toni Morrison By Linda Buck Myers], Marco Portales
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
There is always something final, of having said much of what appears to need saying, when we deal with opposites, when we discuss anything in terms of antipodes. Linda Buck Myers's article, "Perception and Power through Naming: Characters in Search of a Self in the Fiction of Toni Morrison," gives me this feeling; and, having considered the matter, she has not "said everything,'' but she has pointed the way and perceptively located what should become a main vein in the study of Toni Morrison. Language has always been the very stuff of literature, and Myers is correct in highlighting Morrison's …

[Review Of] Joseph Bruchac, Ed. Breaking Silence: An Anthology Of Contemporary Asian American Poets, James B. Irby
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Bruchac has compiled an anthology of contemporary Amerasian poets who speak in clear and melodious voices. These poets of Hawaiian, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino backgrounds present and affirm fresh ideas and viewpoints in poetic form. They offer an understanding of their backgrounds through variant ideas. Each one captures some sense of her or his background culture and shows how their individual lives have been affected by it.

[Review Of] Jack D. Forbes. Native Americans And Nixon: Presidential Politics And Minority Self-Determination 1969-1972, George W. Sieber
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In Native Americans and Nixon, Jack D. Forbes, author of several monographs on the Indian in America's past, has undertaken an important subject, one also difficult because essential sources are lacking. Forbes therefore employs a number of hedges such as "we can only guess" (116) in his conjecture about the motives and actions of the Nixon administration relative to Indian Americans. In a foreword taking twenty-three of the 124 pages of "text," Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz of California State University, Hayward, sets the theme of "neocolonialism." Explaining the background of post-World War II techniques of colonial control, she states that "Hundreds …

[Review Of] James D. Sexton, Ed. Son Of Tecun Uman: A Maya Indian Tells His Life Story, Lyle Koehler
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Although many Indians north of the Rio Grande have published autobiographies, few Latin American natives have done so. Thus, Northern Arizona University anthropologist James D. Sexton's records of interviews with one Tzutuhil Maya from San Jose, Guatemala, and that Indian's preparation of a personal journal (1972- 1 977) yield incredible promise. The Maya, whom Sexton terms a son of the sixteenth century Quiche warrior prince Tecun Uman, has written a highly readable account of Indian society in one village and his own role in it. Sexton has given the diarist the name Ignacio Bizarro Uipan, "for the sake of anonymity," …

[Review Of] Robert L. Allen. Reluctant Reformers: Racism And Social Reform Movements In The United Stales, Linda M. C. Abbott
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Allen, editor of The Black Scholar and chair of the Mills College Ethnic Studies Department, reviews in this volume the ideological impact of racism on six distinct social reform movements in United States history. Chronologically presented, the movements begin immediately after the war for independence and extend into the contemporary era.
[Review Of] Robert J. De Pietro And Edward Ifkovic, Eds. Ethnic Perspectives In American Literature: Selected Essays On The European Contribution, Stewart Rodnon
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Because of the present concentrated push to reshape our view of American literature, the battle to include more ethnic and female writers in the traditional stream of our literature is clearly being won, and the salad bowl is replacing the melting pot as a central metaphor in our writing. Correctly, editors DePietro and Ifkovic in this sourcebook emphasize that now various European ethnic groups have been sparked to cultural pluralism by the raising of our consciousness during the past two decades to the riches in black, brown, and red literatures. Further, they indicate that several bibliographies of ethnic writings now …

[Review Of] Jamake Highwater. The Sun, He Dies, Mic Denfeld
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
How do we ever own our history? How do we ever come to grips with our fairy tales of that history? How do we ever rationalize genocide? The Sun, He Dies makes us ask. Aztec Mexico is presented with its intricacies and intrigues, dreams and realities in this fictional piece based on folk history and historical documents. Nanuatzin, the "woodcutter," is the invented character who ties the events together and presents this alternative view of history that we must face. In the "Afterward and Notes on Sources," Highwater states, " History is always the account of events as seen and …

[Review Of] A. Partes And C. Hirschman, Eds. "Special Issue: Theory And Methods In Migration And Ethnic Research," International Migration Review, John P. Roche
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The summer, 1982, edition of the International Migration Review is a special issue. It contains eight articles which are revisions of papers presented at the Conference on Immigration and Ethnicity Theory and Research, held at Duke University in May, 1981. The purpose of this meeting was to assess the state of knowledge in the field, present new findings and ideas, and identify areas for future investigation. Special attention was given to the determinants of migration, the reception of ethnic minorities, and changes over time.
