Abstract: This year we invite women from diverse backgrounds to embark on a transformative journey of overcoming grief, grudges, and guilt. This empowering event aims to provide a safe and supportive space for women to share their stories, find solace, and embark on a path of healing and self-discovery. Grief, grudges, and guilt are powerful emotions that can burden our minds and hinder personal growth. This conference recognizes that many women face these emotional challenges, whether due to loss, conflicts, or self-imposed expectations. Through a combination of insightful workshops, thought-provoking panel discussions, and uplifting keynote speeches, participants will gain the …
Exploring The Impact Of Covid-19 On Adults With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities In The United States, Sarah Lineberry
Exploring The Impact Of Covid-19 On Adults With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities In The United States, Sarah Lineberry
Theses and Dissertations
Like most disasters, the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted people from historically marginalized communities. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have faced higher rates of infection, hospitalization, and death compared to people without disabilities, as well as significant disruptions to the services that support them to participate in the community. A relative lack of research about the experiences of people with IDD may have contributed to this risk and continues to limit our understanding of the impacts of COVID-19. This three-paper dissertation is guided by the theory of epistemic injustice (Fricker, 2007) to understand the impacts of COVID-19 on …

Putting The “U” In Shore U: Expanding Postsecondary Education On Virginia’S Eastern Shore, Katelyn D. Jones, Karen Belanger, Katharine Wise, Takeya Mclaurin
Doctor of Education Capstones
The University of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Foundation (Shore U) submitted a Request for Assistance to examine opportunities to expand postsecondary education on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. In response to this request, a doctoral research team conducted a mixed-methods study that explored potential pathways for a four-year degree option on the Eastern Shore. Eastern Shore Community College (ESCC) students, ESCC employees, and Eastern Shore community members were surveyed during the quantitative phase of the study. Secondary data was used to understand the postsecondary positionality of Eastern Shore high school students. The President of ESCC, Eastern Shore community members, and Virginia …
Sleep And Health Behaviors In A Safety-Net Primary Care Setting, Sahar Sabet
Sleep And Health Behaviors In A Safety-Net Primary Care Setting, Sahar Sabet
Theses and Dissertations
Nearly half of all premature deaths in the United States are attributable to preventable and modifiable health risk behaviors. For decades, the leading behavioral health contributors to morbidity and mortality are tobacco use, physical inactivity, and alcohol consumption. Medication adherence is a relatively less studied yet critical interrelated health behavior that is tied to health and treatment outcomes. Sleep, an important pillar of health, is a daily and modifiable behavior that shows promise as a health behavior facilitator. Better understanding the dynamics of these modifiable health behaviors is essential for the improvement of health promotion, particularly among underserved populations (e.g., …
Disparate Flood Outcomes And Social Vulnerability As A Fair Housing Issue In Norfolk, Virginia, Molly Frey
Disparate Flood Outcomes And Social Vulnerability As A Fair Housing Issue In Norfolk, Virginia, Molly Frey
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects
The purpose of this plan is to explore how social vulnerability and the disparate impacts of floods can be viewed as a fair housing infringement. This plan includes examining the current and past conditions of how flood risk management, housing development, and the natural environment have been operating in favor of or against socially vulnerable populations in Norfolk. These topics have been explored through stakeholder interviews, geographic analysis, and descriptive analysis. This project suggests an understanding of fair housing in which the equitable sharing of environmental risk and the benefits of its management, are integral to equal access in housing, …
Acculturative Stress And Quality Of Life Among Older Korean Immigrants: Do Religiosity And Resilience Matter?, Sunghwan Cho
Acculturative Stress And Quality Of Life Among Older Korean Immigrants: Do Religiosity And Resilience Matter?, Sunghwan Cho
Theses and Dissertations
The impact of acculturative stress on the quality of life among older adults has been widely acknowledged in previous literature. However, few studies have explored the role of religiosity and resilience in this relationship among older Korean immigrants. This dissertation explores the relationships between acculturative stress, religiosity, resilience, and quality of life among 300 older adults aged 65 years and over who live in an ethnic Korean enclave of Queens, New York. The study employs path analysis and multiple regression analyses to test hypothesized relationships among these variables.
The key findings of the study are as follows: (1) higher acculturative …
The Environment Of Interprofessional Education In Graduate Education: Exploring Professional Programs Of Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, And Physical Therapy, Allison R. Kaczmarek
The Environment Of Interprofessional Education In Graduate Education: Exploring Professional Programs Of Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, And Physical Therapy, Allison R. Kaczmarek
Theses and Dissertations
Interprofessional education (IPE) is an educational approach of increasing popularity in professional schools for the preparation of a collaborative ready healthcare workforce. The accrediting bodies of professional education programs in occupational therapy (OT), physician assistant (PA), and physical therapy (PT) have incorporated standards for outcomes addressing IPE. Although they have endorsed the Health Professions Accreditors Collaborative (HPAC) consensus document on quality IPE, we do not have a contemporary snapshot of the IPE environments in the curriculum of their accredited programs. This dissertation, a collection of three distinct inquiries, has two aims: first, to provide a description of IPE as it …
Demonstrated Sensitivity, Kate Crankshaw
Demonstrated Sensitivity, Kate Crankshaw
Theses and Dissertations
Flameworking is a tedious process that demands all of your attention and focus. Making multiples of a shape in this process allows my body and mind to fall into a rhythm. During these times, it allows my anxious mind to be quieted and helps me dive into processing past memories, trauma, and grief. It is commonly suggested in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy practices to find an activity to do that is both physical and repetitive to work through grief. This stimulates the physical and mental parts of the body, both areas where the effects of grief and trauma are held. Relaxing …
Wrestling With The One Drop Rule: Exploring Multiraciality In Social Work Education, Britney Pitts
Wrestling With The One Drop Rule: Exploring Multiraciality In Social Work Education, Britney Pitts
Theses and Dissertations
This three paper dissertation aims to provide a baseline understanding of how multiraciality is understood in social work education. The first paper, a fusion autoethnography, explores how my own perception of my multiracial identity was clarified throughout my social work education. This exploration led to the development of incongruent logic in/validation (ILV), a new aspect of racial identity invalidation (RII). The second paper, a multimethod qualitative case study, explores master of social work (MSW) students’ knowledge, attitudes, and anticipated professional behaviors with multiracial individuals and families. Themes from this study include: never explicitly learned about multiraciality; non-ecological endorsements of multiracial …
Youth And Caregivers' Perceptions Of Racial Socialization: Examining The Interactive Role Of Risk And Cultural Resilience Factors As Predictors And Mental Health As Outcomes, Arlenis Santana
Theses and Dissertations
Black families' mental health, including that of the children and caretakers, is a persistent public health concern. Existing work documents that parental racial socialization messages are a protective process for the psychological well-being of Black children, youth, and emerging adults (Bannon et al., 2009). The majority of work to date has focused on youth, and we have limited information about the effects of racial socialization on caregivers’ mental health outcomes. It is also essential to examine the relation between racial socialization and outcomes among caregivers because, aside from their identity as parents, caregivers have other identities and experiences that deserve …
The Intersection Between Harm Reduction And Social Work, Sydney Biondi
The Intersection Between Harm Reduction And Social Work, Sydney Biondi
UROP Posters
This qualitative study explores the intersection of harm reduction and social work. Social workers who practice harm reduction were recruited to participate in interviews. In the field of social work, harm reduction is seen as a promising practice, but we do not know very much about what it looks like in practice. The purpose of this research study is to find out how the perceptions of social workers of harm reduction aid or inhibit community harm reduction efforts. We think that the geographical location of a social worker impacts the perceptions and experiences of harm reduction, because of the resources …

Treatment Access And Outcomes For Craniofacial Care: Patient And Parent Perspectives, Benjamin F. Lowe Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Objective: The purpose was to evaluate whether craniofacial patients and their parents have adequate access to care, perceive this care as high quality, and believe that the incorporation of telehealth visits would benefit their current system of craniofacial care. Methods: An original survey was developed and sent to families in treatment with the Virginia Commonwealth University craniofacial team. The tool was used to gather demographic information and assess opinions toward access to, outcomes of, and telehealth services for craniofacial care. Patients 18 years and older took the survey for themselves, while patients under 18 years old had a parent/guardian take …
Re-Redlining Richmond? Holc Grades, Market-Driven Development, And Resident Satisfaction In Richmond, Va, Adrian Cooley
Re-Redlining Richmond? Holc Grades, Market-Driven Development, And Resident Satisfaction In Richmond, Va, Adrian Cooley
Graduate Research Posters
This study investigates the relationship between historical redlining policies, contemporary market-driven community development strategies, and resident satisfaction and quality of life in Richmond, Virginia. The purpose of the study is to understand the limits of using market-driven indicators to create and evaluate community development plans that seek to correct historical inequities created by redlining. To do so, it compares data from redlining maps used by the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) in 1937 to a 2017 real estate Market Value Analysis (MVA) and a 2014 citywide resident satisfaction survey. Results show a significant, moderate correlation between redlining grades and market …
The Impact Of Parenting Classes On Incarcerated Mothers, Kimberly D. Phillips Dr., Kyong-Ah Kwon
The Impact Of Parenting Classes On Incarcerated Mothers, Kimberly D. Phillips Dr., Kyong-Ah Kwon
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
With growing public attention to the problem of mass incarceration, many individuals want to know about the vast rise in women’s incarceration rate; particularly concerning, the increase of mothers in prison. For many mothers, the only source of hope and motivation they have while involved in the criminal justice system is the connection with their children. This article demonstrates that educational programs focusing on parenting can help incarcerated mothers renew their parental role upon release from prison. The target audience for this article includes, but is not limited to, correctional facility administrators, family counselors, educators, and anyone with an interest …

Remembering Dr. Melanie Buffington: Three Reflections On Her Impact And Influence, Luke A. Meeken, Hannah K. Sions, Carlisle Kramer
The Melanie Buffington Papers
Dr. Melanie Buffington's influence on the field of art education can be both acknowledged on a large scale through her history of scholarly publications, and felt on a more intimate scale through the countless emerging scholars and preservice teachers whose practices she shaped through her mentorship and pedagogy. In this piece, three emerging art education scholars and practitioners—a former student, a former mentee, and a former teaching assistant of Dr. Buffington’s—reflect on the impact Dr. Buffington had on their own practices
A Validation Study To Optimize Literature Searching For Interprofessional Education Studies In Pubmed, Sophie Nachman, Rebecca Carlson
A Validation Study To Optimize Literature Searching For Interprofessional Education Studies In Pubmed, Sophie Nachman, Rebecca Carlson
Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Medical Library Association (MAC- MLA) Annual Meeting Posters/Presentations
Objective
As there is exponential growth in the publication of interprofessional education (IPE) research studies, it has become more difficult to quickly find relevant papers and stay abreast of all the latest research. Accordingly, this poster addresses the development, evaluation, and validation of search hedges for IPE studies in PubMed, to improve future access to and synthesis of IPE research. The comprehensive, validated sets of search terms provide expert guidance to make it easier for educators and researchers to find IPE publications.
Methods
The search hedges were created for PubMed using relative recall methodology; the research process followed the guidance …

Social inequities, such as employment, living conditions, and food insecurity, can adversely affect health. Our project explores the efficient integration of social determinants of health into patient care. Social determinants of health are the conditions in the environments in which people live, work, and play that impact overall wellbeing and quality of life. We propose leveraging the VCU Health system to support already existing community partnerships to improve housing access and social assistance for vulnerable populations, specifically targeting Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. We will connect patients to community resources to reduce health disparities, improve health outcomes, and lower costs.

Students in the post-baccalaureate certificate and graduate programs on the Health Science Campus (MS, PhD, and first professional programs including DDS, PharmD, and MD) are highly motivated to succeed in their chosen career paths. Needless to say, these courses are very heavy on didactics and challenge the best of the students. Typically, these programs have rigid curricular designs and offer little to no flexibility to students in choosing the courses. It is fast-paced, high in curricular hours and the students cannot afford to have mishaps without jeopardizing their careers. While this stringent curriculum is necessary for VCU to maintain its …
