Persistence Of Vision: The Value Of Invention In Independent Art Animation, Pamela Turner
Persistence Of Vision: The Value Of Invention In Independent Art Animation, Pamela Turner
Kinetic Imaging Publications and Presentations
The focus of this investigation is in the realm of animation that straddles the ever-shrinking gulf between a screening and an exhibition, the theater and the art gallery. There is a subtle maturity and movement in the animation art world that not only continues but also extends the often-overlooked legacy of independent animation while engaging the conceptual dialogue of contemporary art. This tradition of an art aesthetic is passed from the early inventors who fashioned the necessary tools and images. The myriads of techniques and concepts evidenced throughout this history inform the current practitioner, just as digital technology and the …
Racial Profiling And The War On Terror: Changing Trends And Perspectives, Abu B. Bah
Racial Profiling And The War On Terror: Changing Trends And Perspectives, Abu B. Bah
Ethnic Studies Review
Minorities in the United States have often been treated unfairly by law enforcement agencies. Prior to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the United States, Blacks were the main victims of racial profiling. Since the terrorist attack, however, Arabs and Muslims are becoming the primary targets for profiling by law enforcement agencies. There are some remarkable similarities between the profiling of Blacks and the profiling of Arabs and Muslims. In both cases, the fundamental problems with racial profiling are that it violates the civil liberties of innocent people and denies minorities the equal protection of the law. The War …

The Permeable Classroom Or The Tilted Arc Revisited, Karen E. Frostig
The Permeable Classroom Or The Tilted Arc Revisited, Karen E. Frostig
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
"The Permeable Classroom or the Tilted Arc Revisited" reviews the author's various roles as artist, community activist, art educator and art therapist, in the design and implementation of a large, sequential community-based ''Tree Memorial" project. Using the Tree Memorial Project as a compelling example of the "permeable classroom," the paper delivers an overview of the project that takes place in and around the public school setting, featuring collaboration between teachers, students, parents, administrators, community residents, and city officials.
Performance Art As A Site For Learning: Queer Theory And Performance Studies In The Art Classroom, G. E. Washington
Performance Art As A Site For Learning: Queer Theory And Performance Studies In The Art Classroom, G. E. Washington
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Today, performance art is one of the most useful mediums for helping individuals see themselves differently. In this of "Out of sight" article, I explore the experience of participating in a student's performance art project. This work was a performance of crossing the road. Here, I discuss the inclusion of overtly queer articulations of personal experience within the art classroom. How can performance art construct learning experiences that engage a dynamic process of self-critique? How are classrooms organized differently when students become actively involved in the development of the art curriculum? And, how might a performative investigation of the sociality …
God, The Taboo Topic In Art Education, Terry Barrett, Valora Blackson, Vicki Daiello, Megan Goffos
God, The Taboo Topic In Art Education, Terry Barrett, Valora Blackson, Vicki Daiello, Megan Goffos
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
A serendipitous match of this journal's call for imagery "that lies outside art educators' accepted sphere"-"out of site/ sight/ cite" - and a (too) rare discussion among art educators talking about God within a secular classroom prompts this article. Concepts of God are generally withheld from the site of public school art classrooms in the United States; many teachers express wariness and fear of bringing artists' sights of God into their public school art rooms, although God and Gods are a frequent subject for artists through time and across place. Further, the topic of God is rarely cited in art …
Voices Of Women: Telling The Truth Through Art Making, Alice Pennisi
Voices Of Women: Telling The Truth Through Art Making, Alice Pennisi
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
On Wednesdays, when the last period of the school day is finished, the students trickle out of room 412 of Burnham High School and the young women enter who have been waiting outside. They immediately push all the desks to the side or back walls, leaving a large open space. Then each carries a chair toward the front of the room, creating a circle. Someone closes the door, and they begin to talk with one another. Thus begins a weekly meeting of Voices of Women (VOW), a group comprised mainly of high school girls who create collaborative artwork based on …
The Mystery Of Dr. Who? On A Road Less Traveled In Art Education, R. Michael Fisher, Barbara Bickel
The Mystery Of Dr. Who? On A Road Less Traveled In Art Education, R. Michael Fisher, Barbara Bickel
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This article is a 'fun' puzzle (and quiz) to solve. Please do not look to the next pages ahead, or the mystery of Dr. Who will be spoiled. We have recently discovered an intriguing art educator "out of the blue," whose work is largely out of cite/sight in most art education circles today. We want to bring Dr. Who's 'spirit' and work back to life and teach others some of what we have been learning in the past six months of intense research. The two metaphors we utilize (puzzle/ game and invoking a specter) are not without their sociopolitical power …
Reading Objects: Collections As Sites And Systems Of Cultural Order, Alice Wexler
Reading Objects: Collections As Sites And Systems Of Cultural Order, Alice Wexler
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The political nature of making personal and cultural meaning of objects (both ordinary and aesthetic) is the site where transactions between our innate need for order and environmental influences, such as consumerism, are made. Valuing objects leads to the phenomena of collection, a subject that has been of interest in education and psychology since the nineteenth century. I ask how the private collections of children, and later adults, lead to systems of labeling, grouping, and display of art and artifacts in the art and natural history museum. In the age of the meta museum, how do educators question the museum's …
Marginalia And Meaning: Off-Site/Sight/Cite Points Of Reference For Extended Trajectories In Learning, James Haywood Rolling Jr.
Marginalia And Meaning: Off-Site/Sight/Cite Points Of Reference For Extended Trajectories In Learning, James Haywood Rolling Jr.
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This study argues that drawing upon off-site/ sight/ cite points of reference affords a space for extended trajectories of learning and the cultivation of rich and atypical personal meaning unavailable within the terrain and climes of typical schooling frameworks. This paper continues the author's effort to establish the efficacy of a poststructural and poetic aesthetic in qualitative research writing.
Precinct, Gayle Gorman
Precinct, Gayle Gorman
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
"Precinct" was a site-specific art project/ performance/ exhibit put on by SITE: Buffalo Artist Collective, an organization devoted to a nontraditional approach to art emphasizing the experiential and the value of spectered memories contained in found objects and images. With the aid of the Buffalo Arts Commission, the abandoned police precinct (now destroyed) on Niagara Street on Buffalo's West side was open to the public, occupied and interacted with for a one-day event. This venue was specifically selected in order to bypass the gallerycentric mode of display which tends to dominate the world of art. By doing so, SITE made …
Grasping The Site/Sight/Cite Of The Image: A Lacanian Explication, Jan Jagodzinski
Grasping The Site/Sight/Cite Of The Image: A Lacanian Explication, Jan Jagodzinski
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Reading images psychoanalytically from a Lacanian perspective has its challenges. The first task of this essay is to provide a way through what is often taken to be difficult and impenetrable theory, to explicate how the homology site/ sight/ cite can be understood in any act of critical perception. Its second task is to make distinctions between a psychoanalytic understanding of the subject as being 'split' or divided (as represented by the matheme '$,' Lacan's symbol for this form of subjectivity) when applied to art, as opposed to a naive realist subject of representation or a savvy poststructuralist (decentered) subject …

GEHLI - 2026 VCUL Team Project Publications
While a multitude of information from a host of sources exists on how to keep children safe on the Internet, there is not a unified effort to combine it all and get it to the right people. This is not a plan to teach college students about Internet safety. This is a proposal to begin much earlier, targeting middle-school aged children and their parents, many of whom have no idea of the dangers – and opportunities – that exist in cyberspace.
Relationships Between Dimensions Of Religiosity And Internalizing And Externalizing Psychiatric Disorders: A Twin Study, Gilbert Todd Vance
Relationships Between Dimensions Of Religiosity And Internalizing And Externalizing Psychiatric Disorders: A Twin Study, Gilbert Todd Vance
Theses and Dissertations
The present study estimated the genetic and environmental effects on different dimensions of religiosity, explored how genetic and environmental effects covary across different dimensions of religiosity, and decomposed the covariance of genetic and environmental effects between different dimensions of religiosity and internalizing and externalizing psychiatric disorders. Dimensions of religiosity were found to be largely influenced by additive genetic and unique environmental effects, with little influence observed from common enviromental effects. Multidimensional analyses found that the seven religiosity factors observed in the present study were influenced by one common additive genetic factor, three common unique environmental factors, and unique environmental effects …
The Long-Term Effects Of Direct Verbal Victimization And Family Support On Anxious And Aggressive Behaviors In Urban Adolescents: Do Mean Words Have A Lasting Impact?, Amie Bettencourt
Theses and Dissertations
Stressful life events that occur within the context of interpersonal relationships are problematic for adolescents. Peer victimization, a stressful interpersonal event, involves acts of both physical and verbal harassment, and can contribute to psychosocial maladjustment among youth. Direct verbal victimization is a specific form of peer victimization involving name-calling and teasing that is particularly prevalent among adolescents, but has rarely been studied separately from other types of victimization. This form of victimization is associated with adjustment problems, including anxiety and aggression among adolescents. Despite the significant association between direct verbal victimization and negative adolescent adjustment outcomes, not all youth who experience …
Frame Of Mind, Jeffrey Brooks Warden
Frame Of Mind, Jeffrey Brooks Warden
Theses and Dissertations
The creative process offers me an escape and tranquility worthy of sharing. When creating art, I reflect on the people, places, and things that move me. I convey my frame of mind through the brush to the canvas. The result is intense strokes of color that deliver clarity of emotion for others to experience. The intention of my work is to share a world that satisfies the eyes, mind, and soul. There is something about each piece that I hope will keep the viewer returning to absorb, contemplate, and enjoy.
Emotional Labor And Nursing Students: An Investigation Of Nursing Students' Emotion Work, Ann Caldwell Smolen-Hetzel
Emotional Labor And Nursing Students: An Investigation Of Nursing Students' Emotion Work, Ann Caldwell Smolen-Hetzel
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined emotional labor as a potential source of stress for nursing students, as nursing students' performance of emotional labor may impact their working lives in important ways. Participants were 107 undergraduate and graduate nursing students enrolled in a large southeastern university who completed the Discrete EmotionsEmotional Labor Scale (DEELS; Glomb & Tews, 20041, the Student Nurse Stress Index (SNSI; Jones & Johnston, 1999), the Job Descriptive Index (JDI; Balzer et al., 20001, and the Job in General (JIG; Balzer et al., 2000) scales. Two sub-samples of nursing students were identified, one of which held a registered nurse license …

Physical Activity In Elementary School Girls: Implementation And Theory-Based Evaluation Of Girls On The Run, Melanie Kerr Van Ogtrop Bean
Physical Activity In Elementary School Girls: Implementation And Theory-Based Evaluation Of Girls On The Run, Melanie Kerr Van Ogtrop Bean
Theses and Dissertations
Rates of obesity in children are rising at an alarming rate, particularly among girls and ethnic minorities. Engaging in regular physical activity can help reduce this risk. Little is known about factors associated with physical activity (PA) in preadolescent populations, an age when intervention is ideal. Guided by Social Cognitive Theory, this study used a repeated-measures design to examine PA and its correlates, including PA self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and social influences (from parents and peers). Among participants (N = 57) in Girls on the Run, an innovative PA intervention for elementary school girls. Participants (M age = 9.4) predominately include …
State Of Being, Anne Bradshaw
State Of Being, Anne Bradshaw
Theses and Dissertations
My work speaks to the processes of adaptation and assimilation, phenomena that explain the way in which we transform life experience and incorporate the effects of such experience into the daily workings of our psyche. To this extent my work is a self-analysis, an autobiographical reckoning, a non-verbal representation of collective experiences rendered in forms upon which images are spontaneously drawn or painted with fiber. The process of making art as a means of accessing creative instincts is a manifestation of the way in which I experience life. Adapting and assimilating to our human condition is an art, a form …
Bitterroot Landing: An Adaptation From Novel To Stage, Christy Leake
Bitterroot Landing: An Adaptation From Novel To Stage, Christy Leake
Theses and Dissertations
My thesis explores the process involved in adapting Sheri Reynolds' novel, Bitterroot Landing, into a stage play. During the adaptation process I faced numerous challenges, including structural issues, expanding or changing dialogue, omitting or melding scenes and characters, and dealing with the serious themes of incest and sexual abuse. This thesis describes these challenges and the steps I took to overcome them.
Psychological Symptoms, Marital Quality, And Environmental Stress In Newly-Married Couples, Constance B. Sharp
Psychological Symptoms, Marital Quality, And Environmental Stress In Newly-Married Couples, Constance B. Sharp
Theses and Dissertations
Cross-sectional relationships between psychological symptoms, marital quality, and stress experienced over the past week were explored using data from 310 newly married couples. Couples were recruited through newspaper ads and paid to participate. Couples were eligible if they had been married for less than six months and were not receiving therapy when they contacted the researcher. The Global Severity Index (GSI) of the Brief Symptom Inventory measured psychological symptoms. The Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) measured marital quality, and scaled ratings of 11 types of stressors experienced over the previous week measured stress. Husband and wife measures were taken of each …
The Predictive Relationship Of Inhibitory Control, Emotion Regulation, Moral Emotions, And Life Stressors On Behavior Problems In School-Aged Children Of Incarcerated Mothers, Geraldine M. Lotze
The Predictive Relationship Of Inhibitory Control, Emotion Regulation, Moral Emotions, And Life Stressors On Behavior Problems In School-Aged Children Of Incarcerated Mothers, Geraldine M. Lotze
Theses and Dissertations
Children whose mothers go to prison are at high risk for poor outcomes of many kinds, including externalizing behaviors, internalizing disorders, school dropout, and eventual criminal activity. Inhibitory control, moral emotions, emotion regulation, and stressful life events were examined as predictors of externalizing and internalizing behaviors in children of incarcerated mothers. Participants were 50 children age 6 to 12 years (M = 9.77 y, SD = 1.54) with mothers currently in prison who attended a faith-based recreational summer camp. Inhibitory control was not impaired in these children, showing that their brains were functioning appropriately in this area of executive functioning. Inhibitory …

Sphere Of Influence, Benjamin Andrew Jones
Theses and Dissertations
The following thesis titled SPHERE OF INFLUENCE is about development. I discuss my efforts to develop as an artist addressing observation and awareness of the self and our surroundings. I will discuss how this relates to my approach with materials and process and will explain not only what the sculpture titled SPHERE OF INFLUENCE has come to represent for me, but also the reactions of viewers during the temporary installation of the SPHERE OF INFLUENCE at the Anderson Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University from May 5th 2006 through May 14th, 2006. I will explain the SPHERE OF INFLENCE'S function as …
Cultural Stereotypes: From Dracula's Myth To Contemporary Diasporic Productions, Ileana F. Popa
Cultural Stereotypes: From Dracula's Myth To Contemporary Diasporic Productions, Ileana F. Popa
Theses and Dissertations
This study is focused on a highly topical theme, which belongs to the pluralist practice of cultural studies, and aims at investigating a remarkable phenomenon of identity-shaping and cross-cultural exchange. Starting from an analysis of Dracula as the epitomized image of the Balkans (and of Romania, more specifically) abroad, this paper provides a comprehensive historical and (con)textual analysis of the myth, enlarged to incorporate it into the fictions of exile and to draw the reader's attention to the "demonic" dimension of the Balkan area in general, and the Romanian area in particular. The first chapter provides a theoretical overview meant …

The Effect Of Advertising On Attitudes Toward Tobacco Use And Decisions About Smoking Among Virginia Adolescents, John Rosser Matthews Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: This study seeks to determine 1) whether the type of advertising exposure is associated with adolescent health perceptions of tobacco use, and 2) whether the type of media exposure is associated with initiation plans (non-smokers) or quitting plans (smokers). Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey of middle school students (n=l1,128).Psychosocial variables were knowledge of the risks of tobacco use (range: 3-15) and benefits of being tobacco free (range: 7-35) with higher scores indicating greater understanding. Intentions to quit or initiate were construed as binary variables. Exposure variables were tobacco advertisements or anti-tobacco media messages. Covariates were gender, race, grade …
The Anti-Plaque Efficacy Of Listerine® Used In Combination With Toothbrushing In Orthodontic Patients, Zachary A. Casagrande
The Anti-Plaque Efficacy Of Listerine® Used In Combination With Toothbrushing In Orthodontic Patients, Zachary A. Casagrande
Theses and Dissertations
The bactericidal efficacy of Listerine®, the essential oil-containing mouthrinse, has long been recognized. The purpose of this study was to determine whether Listerine® mouthrinse, when added to the standard oral hygiene regimen, had an added benefit in reducing plaque and gingivitis development in orthodontic patients over a six-month period. 50 orthodontic patients from the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Orthodontics were assigned either to the brushing + flossing (N= 25) or brushing + flossing + Listerine® (N = 25) group. At baseline (TI), measurements for the Ramfjord teeth were recorded for the gingival index, plaque index and bleeding index. Subsequent …
Children's Coping With Peer Rejection Experiences: The Regulating Role Of Emotion, Kimberly L. Goodman
Children's Coping With Peer Rejection Experiences: The Regulating Role Of Emotion, Kimberly L. Goodman
Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this investigation was to examine the role of emotions as predictors of children's coping responses to peer rejection experiences. This study also explored how children's emotional experience and coping behaviors were related to gender, peer socialization (i.e., receiving prosocial acts by peers and previous victimization experiences), and indices of psychopathology. Children ages 7-12 (N=53) completed questionnaires to assess emotional and coping responses to hypothetical peer rejection scenarios, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and peer experiences. Overall, findings suggested that emotion-related factors (emotion states and more stable "emotional tendencies" such as psychological symptoms) and social context (i.e., …
Relationships Among Stress, Blood Pressure, And Heart Rate Variability In Meditators, Sangthong Terathongkum
Relationships Among Stress, Blood Pressure, And Heart Rate Variability In Meditators, Sangthong Terathongkum
Theses and Dissertations
PROBLEM STATEMENT: Growing evidence indicates that psychological stress contributes to cardiovascular diseases through complex neuroendocrine mechanisms. Psychological stress leads to several physiological responses including increased heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) as well as decreased heart rate variability (HRV) through alterations in the autonomic nervous system (ANS), specifically increased sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity and decreased parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity. Meditation is thought to induce an innate relaxation response leading to reduced psychological stress. Findings from past studies have provided inconclusive evidence regarding the direction and strength of relationships among stress, BP, HRV, and meditation practice. PROCEDURES: A …
