Vcu Today (1974-09-26)

VCU Today, 1972-1988

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Recent Advances In Synovial Fluid Analysis, Duncan S. Owen Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Synovial fluid analysis is a frequently ignored examination except in suspected cases of septic conditions. It has been shown that it is an extremely valuable procedure in making rapid and accurate diagnoses in many types of joint diseases.

A Review Of Some Aspects Of L-Forms And Gonococci, Charles L. Cooke, Bernard Germain, Bonnie Balducci, Harry P. Dalton Jan 1974

A Review Of Some Aspects Of L-Forms And Gonococci, Charles L. Cooke, Bernard Germain, Bonnie Balducci, Harry P. Dalton

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Systemic manifestations of gonococcal disease, such as arthritis, are often sterile on the usual culture methods used to grow gonococci. Allergic mechanisms have been invoked to explain this but with little evidence to support the concept. With the report by Holmes et al., that L-forms of gonococci were isolated from joint fluid of a patient with gonococcal arthritis, we decided to investigate the possible role of L-forms in gonococcal disease.

Reconstructive Intracranial Vascular Surgery, John M. Tew Jr. Jan 1974

Reconstructive Intracranial Vascular Surgery, John M. Tew Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

It is scarcely less than two decades since the initial cautious explorations of reconstructive surgery for the prevention of cerebral infarction caused by extracranial vascular disease began. The next years recorded an accumulative experience in the field of vascular surgery. Early clinical investigations led to the discovery that extracranial vascular disease is a major cause of cerebral infarction or stroke. Estimates indicate, however, that only 30-40% of the patients with cerebrovascular insufficiency have significant extracranial occlusive disease. For this larger group of patients, previous surgical methods offer no hope. It is the purpose of this report to review the current …

Advances In The Management And Surgical Treatment Of Intracranial Aneurysms, Thoralf M. Sundt Jr. Jan 1974

Advances In The Management And Surgical Treatment Of Intracranial Aneurysms, Thoralf M. Sundt Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Patients who have sustained a spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage are victims of a very serious illness. Not only are they subject at all times to the potentially catastrophic results of a recurrent bleed, but they are faced with the manifestations of the irritative effects of blood in the subarachnoid space where the blood may function as a poison to the vessel wall. These acutely ill individuals may suffer a composite of secondary effects from a bleed which may include a communicating hydrocephalus, cerebral edema (ischemic or chemically induced), sterile meningitis, inappropriate ADH syndrome (osmotic effects of blood in the cerebrospinal fluid), …

Some of the physiological properties of the cerebral circulation, intracranial pressure and brain metabolism, as well as some of the pathophysiological alterations that we see with various types of brain injuries have been discussed in this series. We are going to see how we can apply some of this information clinically.

Hepatic Ornithine Metabolism In Hydrazine-Treated Rats, Van Saxton Hubbard Jan 1974

Hepatic Ornithine Metabolism In Hydrazine-Treated Rats, Van Saxton Hubbard

Theses and Dissertations

Ornithine plays an important role in mammalian intermediary metabolism. Ornithine can be (1) utilized as a component of the urea cycle, (2) decarboxylated to form putrescine, a precursor of the polyamines, spermidine and spermine, and (3) converted metabolically to arginine, proline and glutamate. In prior investigations conducted in our laboratories and others, free endogenous hepatic pools of ornithine were found to be elevated following hydrazine administration. Consequently, time-course alterations of arginase, ornithine δ-transaminase, ornithine transcarbamylase, and ornithine decarboxylase activities were investigated regarding the effect of hydrazine treatment on hepatic ornithine metabolism in the rat. As an outgrowth of these investigations, …
