Vcu Today (1984-03-07)
VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Our group initiated the use of pyrene derivatives for functional and structural studies of the membrane-bound Acetylcholine Receptor (AcChR) system. Our studies have taken two approaches. We have recently used a hydrophobic derivative (pyrene-l-sulfonyl azide) that is able to bind covalently to regions of the AcChR molecule accessible from the membrane lipid (1) to monitor ligandinduced effects at those hydrophobic regions of the AcChR protein exposed to the membrane matrix (2). The structural effects induced by ligand binding are interpreted in relation to the AcChR "desensitization" process. We have also used a hydrophilic pyrene derivative (1,3,6,8-pyrene tetra sulfonate [PTSA]) to …

[Review Of] Carol Munday Lawrence, Producer. Oscar Micheaux, Film Pioneer (Film), Charles C. Irby
[Review Of] Carol Munday Lawrence, Producer. Oscar Micheaux, Film Pioneer (Film), Charles C. Irby
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Oscar Micheaux, Film Pioneer is one of seven films in the "Were You There" series produced by Carol Lawrence (the others include The Black West, The Cotton Club, The Facts of Life, Portrait of Two Artists, Sports Profile, and When the Animals Talked). This film's story revolves around Bee Freeman's (the Sepia Mae West) and Lorenzo Tucker's (the black Valentino) recollections of their relationships with Micheaux and their perceptions of his character. Danny Glover plays the role of Oscar Micheaux, Richard Harder is shown as the young Lorenzo Tucker, and Janice Morgan portrays the vamp that was Bee Freeman in …

Explorations in Sights and Sounds
"The time has come to be both joyous and lyrical about the particular exhilaration in the experience of the American immigrants and their descendents," writes Rose Basile Green in the introduction of this volume of poetry. "In lifting harmonized voices, the people of this nation sing in a symphony of one theme-we are all Americans" (4).

[Review Of] Ken Harrison, Producer. The Last Of The Caddoes (Film), David M. Gradwohl
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Several staff members and students in anthropology and Indian Studies programs at Iowa State University had the opportunity to view the film, The Last of the Caddoes, during the spring of 1984. The University's Media Resource Center had obtained the film on approval and sought our advice as to whether it should be purchased for on campus classroom use and for rental to interest groups off campus. The film came with a respectable-looking pedigree: it was based on a short story by William Humphrey, an author of considerable repute in Texas; it was produced by Ken Harrison with funding from …

Potential And K+ Activity In Skinned Muscle Fibers. Evidence Against A Simple Donnan Equilibrium, R.E. Godt, C.M. Baumgarten
Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations
ABSTRACT
It has been suggested that potentials measured with conventional microelectrodes in chemically or mechanically skinned muscle fibers arise from a Donnan equilibrium due to myofilament fixed charges. This hypothesis was tested in mechanically skinned frog (Rana pipiens) semitendinosus fibers by measuring the distribution potential (Ed) between fiber and bath with 3 M KCI-filled microelectrodes and the K+ activity gradient (a'K/a) with K+ ion-selective microelectrodes (KISE). If skinned fibers are a Donnan system, Ed should become more positive as pH is decreased, altering the fixed charge on the myofilaments. Consistent with this expectation, Ed was -4.4, -0.6, and +4.8 mV …
Social Theory And Social Practice In Art Teacher Education, Dan Nadaner
Social Theory And Social Practice In Art Teacher Education, Dan Nadaner
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
It seems clear that art educators must think clearly about the design of teacher education programs if social theory is to become social practice. The obstacles to successful integration of theory and practice are many, ranging from the logistics of engaging artist-teachers in theoretical studies, to the intrinsically different natures of theoretical and practical activities. And it is difficult to guarantee that such amorphous qualities as flexible dialogue, love, hope, and mutual trust can be made part of a teacher education program, even when a deliberate effort is made to do so. But while the model of teacher education discussed …

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
In an attempt to record a sense of the formal sessions of the 1984 Conference, we asked the Chairs to assemble abstracts and discussant comments for their sessions. Although we are pleased with a response greater than in 1983, we are aiming for one hundred percent in 1985.
Ethnicity And Empowerment: Implications For Psychological Training In The 1980s, Linda M.C. Abbott
Ethnicity And Empowerment: Implications For Psychological Training In The 1980s, Linda M.C. Abbott
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Psychological services, as a part of the health-care system, have been "embedded in specific configurations of cultural meanings and social relationships,"[1] and the role of patients and healers cannot be understood apart from that context. This article explores the failure of psychology to effectively address the inhibiting impact of racism on human development, and it suggests a corrective agenda for the training of socially responsive and responsible psychologists, an agenda derived from the literacy education model of Paulo Freire.

Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The major accomplishment of this collection of first-person reminiscences and third-person authorial interjection is its presentation of an impressive collection of imported talents, all of whom suffer (often gladly) the intellectual and spiritual privations of the West in exchange for its relative economic and social largess. To paraphrase Churchill, democracy (read "capitalism") is the worst form of government except for all the others. This book says this geometrically, with the lines and curves formed by the various interviews forming a final, however planular, shape.
