Abstracts From The Thirteenth Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In on attempt to record a sense of the formal sessions at the 1985 Conference, the registration director asked Chairs to assemble abstracts and respondent comments from their sessions. Although the objective was full-coverage, it remains a goal for 1986.

[Review Of] Sameer Y. Abraham And Nabeel Abraham, Eds. Arabs In The New World, Akram Khater

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This book is a collection of sociological essays on immigrant Arab communities in the United States. It is divided into three sections: the first provides historical background to the flow of immigrants from Arab countries; the second is devoted to case studies of Arab communities in the Detroit area (where the greatest concentration of Arab-Americans in the United States is located); and the third provides a useful bibliography of current scholarship about Arab-Americans.

[Review Of] Charles V. Willie. Race, Ethnicity, And Socioeconomic Status, Kimberly S. Hee Jan 1985

[Review Of] Charles V. Willie. Race, Ethnicity, And Socioeconomic Status, Kimberly S. Hee

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The author examines the interrelations of race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status through the presentation of a collection of his writings about blacks which have been reprinted from various sources. By reprinting this collection of works, Willie seeks to gain the opportunity to take "theoretical stock" of what he has learned through his involvements as a planner, student, teacher, researcher, administrator, policy maker, consultant, and concerned citizen. His aim is to link his work with others in the field, hoping to benefit from their clarification and correction. Willie's main objective is to articulate his theoretical conceptions about the field of race …

Hold The Pickles, Hold The Lettuce, Special Orders Do Upset Us: The Franchise System In American Art Education, Tom Anderson Jan 1985

Hold The Pickles, Hold The Lettuce, Special Orders Do Upset Us: The Franchise System In American Art Education, Tom Anderson

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

I have a history of advocating locally specific art content as very important to the construction of art curricula. This position arises from my readings in the area of socially contextual aesthetics. By art content I mean not only thematic content but also formal qualities, media, and technical execution all of which contribute to an artwork's style. By locally specific art content I mean the style of the work as it arises from a specific place at a specific time, and which in some way reflects the collective consciousness of the culture or subculture of the work's genesis. If one …

The Journal Of Social Theory In Art Education

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The membership of The Caucus on Social Theory and Art Education has identified the need to raise questions about issues that affect the teaching of art from a critical knowledge of its social ramifications. The papers in BULLETIN NUMBER FIVE acknowledge the importance of looking at art teachers, looking at ourselves, to gain perspective on the art education process as a socially relevant experience.

Cultural Knowledge: The Unrecognized Responsibility Of Art Education, Helen J. Muth Jan 1985

Cultural Knowledge: The Unrecognized Responsibility Of Art Education, Helen J. Muth

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Art educators are a subgroup within the larger culture whose role it is to communicate information and skills in the visual arts for guiding individuals to find greater personal satisfaction in the visual arts, to gain knowledge of the visual arts as areas of specialized interest, and to become aware of the contribution the visual arts make to their cultural heritage. This paper proposes that the kinds of information that future art teachers gain while training in their specialized area fails to prepare them adequately for their role. A parallelism discovered in the work of cultural geographer, Yi-Fu Tuan (1974) …

Thought On Social Contextualism In Art And Art Education, Tom Anderson Jan 1985

Thought On Social Contextualism In Art And Art Education, Tom Anderson

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Art as a manifestation and reflect ion of culture has been clearly established. Discussions of various depth on the subject are available in many general art education texts. However, the concept of art as a reflection of culture may take many forms and thus has the potential for ambiguity. Culture, as defined by the social sciences, is the complex of knowledge, beliefs, mores, customs, laws, and social institutions held by human beings as a part of society. Culture, in this sense, does not refer to what is commonly known as high culture, except as high culture is included in the …

Proliferation Of Schwann Cells Induced By Axolemmal And Myelin Membranes, Michael Paul Dinneen Jan 1985

Proliferation Of Schwann Cells Induced By Axolemmal And Myelin Membranes, Michael Paul Dinneen

Theses and Dissertations

Purified Schwann cells were cultured from neonatal rat sciatic nerve using a modification of the method of Brockes (Brockes, J.P. et al, Brain Res. 165(1979) 105-118). Schwann cells and contaminating fibroblasts were unambiguously identified using fluorescent antibodies to 2'3' cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase and the thy 1.1 antigen respectively. The Schwann cells were quiescent unless challenged with mitogens, They proliferated rapidly in response to the soluable mitogen, cholera toxin, or to membrane fractions from rat CNS or PNS, prepared by the method of DeVries (DeVries, G.H., J Neurochem, 40 (1983) 1709-1717). Mitogenic activity was present in both axolemmal and myelin enriched …

Dissection Of Microphage Activation Using T Cell Hybridoma Derived Lymphokines, William S. Futch Jr. Jan 1985

Dissection Of Microphage Activation Using T Cell Hybridoma Derived Lymphokines, William S. Futch Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Macrophage phenotype/function can be modulated by various T-cell lymphokines (LK). The alteration of macrophage phenotype is a result of LK concentration, duration of exposure, and the level of macrophage activation when obtained from in vivo sources through elicitation by either sterile irritants or immune cellular mechanisms. In order to dissect macrophage activation into discrete signals T cell hybridomas were constructed by fusing HAT sensitive BW5147 cells with nylon-wool purified, con A stimulated T cells. The resulting T cell hybrids were screened for their ability to: (a) protect macrophages from the cytopathic effect of Naegleria; (b) induce class II MHC gene …

Vcu Today (1984-12-12)

VCU Today, 1972-1988

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
