“Truth” That Sells: Broadcast News Media In Video Art And Art Education, Mary Wyrick
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Vincent Lanier (1969), Manuel Barkan and Laura Chapman (1967), Laura Chapman (1982), Paul Duncum (1987, 1989), and Dan Nadaner (1985) have written about the implications of using mass media sources in art education. In their writings, each of these authors acknowledged the importance of film, television, and other mass media to student populations in art educational contexts. Even with these precedents and extensive literature in media studies, students today continue to uncritically consume the visual media that permeate their lives. They need to understand how contemporary culture is at least partially shaped by representations in visual media. Whether these representations …

Editorial, Michael J. Emme, Elizabeth Garber, Charles Wieder
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This editorial is a model of the kind of collaborative process shared by Chuck, Elizabeth and myself throughout the growth of JSTAE 14. In this instance, given a suggested structure, Chuck wrote his portion of the editorial focusing on issues arising from the two articles where he lead the editorial team. He then sent his work to Elizabeth who wrote her editorial with reference to the articles where she took the lead, but also in response to Chuck's writing. As the third in line I have the opportunity to comment on the articles for which I had final responsibility as …
The Deep Creek School: Technology, Ecology And The Body As Pedagogical Alternatives In Art Education, Daniel L. Collins, Charles R. Garoian
The Deep Creek School: Technology, Ecology And The Body As Pedagogical Alternatives In Art Education, Daniel L. Collins, Charles R. Garoian
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The Deep Creek School is grappling with a cultural condition in which the line between actual experience and its simulation has become blurred as never before. Today’s students are conversant in the language of electronic media and consumer culture--but they encounter difficulties when trying to navigate the real crises in the health of their bodies and the global environment. There is a deep sense among many of the artists and educators that we speak with that art programs nationwide are not responding sufficiently to the dramatic changes occurring in the culture at large. The precedent of fitting programs to the …
An Editor’S Note: Critical Theory, Art And Education, Michael J. Emme
An Editor’S Note: Critical Theory, Art And Education, Michael J. Emme
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
With JSTAE 14 the editorial team offers an innovation that we hope will be carried on by future editors, and will function as a provocation to the art education research community. What follows are 11 pages of images as well as a 12th work on the cover that have been selected for their relevance to the theme Eco-Techno. A review of academic publications in art education reveals extremely limited evidence of visual practice among the research. Of all the fields in academia, the one most suited to exploring the link between the many aspects of visual practice and the goals …

Behind, The Road Is Blocked: Art Education And Nostagia, Paul Duncum
Behind, The Road Is Blocked: Art Education And Nostagia, Paul Duncum
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Proponents of high culture have trusted its power as an antidote to contemporary social ills. However, art educators should be aware that the history of such attempts is a history of failure. It is a history of gradual marginalization, both of the critique and the critics, and of increasingly conservative political reaction. The critique represents, today as it has always done, a nostalgia for an idealized past. But the failure of the critique suggests that there can be no going back. It is argued that the increasing failure of this critique to positively influence social and cultural life is a …
Art, Education, Work, And Leisure: Tangles In The Lifelong Learning Network, Lara M. Lackey
Art, Education, Work, And Leisure: Tangles In The Lifelong Learning Network, Lara M. Lackey
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Although the field of art education has, in recent years, acknowledged the prevalence of non-formal educational sites, our literature is divided on whether this trend poses an opportunity for cooperation and strength or a threat to the status of art as a school subject. This paper consults the literature of critical theory within the domains of art, education, and leisure studies in order to examine the relationship between formal and non-formal art education. First, it considers ways in which tradition conceptualizations of art, education, leisure, and work foster an acceptance of art as experience and knowledge to be gained outside …

The Committee On Public Information And The Mobilization Of Public Opinion In The United States During World War I: The Effects On Education And Artists, Clayton Funk
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The Committee on Public Information was established during World War I to turn every channel of communication and education to promote the war effort. The Committee marshaled agencies of the press, education, and advertising, among others into wartime service for the Committee. The following questions are posed: 1) To what degree did the Committee practice direct censorship in its promotion of wartime issues? 2) What was the role of education in the wartime campaigns? 3) What was the role of the artist in wartime art affect public taste? This article is based on the theory put forth by Lawrence A. …
Media Discourse And The Feminization Of Poverty, Carmen L. Manning-Miller
Media Discourse And The Feminization Of Poverty, Carmen L. Manning-Miller
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Source diversity models suggest that by using non-conventional, non-official sources for news content, the prevailing perceptions about poor people and their needs would be undermined in news coverage. This study found that major newspapers are making efforts to diversify the sources quoted in their coverage of poverty issues. However, the portrayals of poor people have not changed, particularly for women and people of color. Results of this study suggest that source diversity research must go further to explore how sources are used to address the problems of the poor and how media influence public perceptions of public policy related to …
Race, Gender, And The Status-Quo:Asian And African American Relations In A Hollywood Film, Clarence Spigner
Race, Gender, And The Status-Quo:Asian And African American Relations In A Hollywood Film, Clarence Spigner
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Hollywood films play a significant role in constructing and reinforcing inter-ethnic tensions through negative representations of Asian Americans and African Americans. While white males are most often depicted as smart and romantically desirable, thereby reinforcing an ideology of white male dominance, Asian Americans and Blacks are typically diminished to demeaning and secondary status. Thi[this] article explores these racist steretotypes [stereotypes] in director Michael Cimino's 19985[1985] film Year of the Dragon (as well as a number of other Hollywood films), arguing that such race and gender-specific imagery is functional; for while it promotes race/gender stereotypes, it also serves to rationalize white …
[Review Of] Diane Glancy. Claiming Breath, Laurie Lisa
[Review Of] Diane Glancy. Claiming Breath, Laurie Lisa
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In her seventh book of poetry, Diane Glancy presents a moving account of the portrait of the artist as Native, woman, and poet. Of German, English, and Cherokee descent, Glancy's prose poetry, as she states in her "Preface," is often "about being in the middle ground between two cultures, not fully a part of either. I write with a split voice, often experimenting with language until the parts equal some sort of a whole." The Sixty-three poems in this volume (with the last composed of eight parts) are a non-linear journey, a physical and psychological traveling through the senses and …

The Impact Of Advanced Information Technologies On Architecture And Engineering Design Firms: A Field Study, Mcdonald Davis Iii
The Impact Of Advanced Information Technologies On Architecture And Engineering Design Firms: A Field Study, Mcdonald Davis Iii
Theses and Dissertations
The research investigated architecture and engineering design firms that have a reputation for being competent in the utilization of advanced information technologies. It is believed that competency in the use of these technologies has contributed to the ability of A&E design firms to perform engineering design services effectively and efficiently.
Review of the literature suggests that the use of advanced information technologies has had lasting interactive effects on the strategy, structure, management, tasks, and the personnel of organizations. There does not, however, appear to be any dissertation research on the impact of advanced information technologies on architecture and engineering firms. …
Regulatory Analysis Of Vimentin Expression In Metastatic Versus Nonmetastatic Breast Cancer Cell Lines, Danielle N. Bird
Regulatory Analysis Of Vimentin Expression In Metastatic Versus Nonmetastatic Breast Cancer Cell Lines, Danielle N. Bird
Theses and Dissertations
The intermediate filament gene family, composed of six classes, shows both tissue and development-specific expression. Vimentin is a unique member of the intermediate filament protein family: although it is expressed in cells of mesenchymal origin, vimentin may also be expressed with other intermediate filament proteins during early stages of development. In some cases, as differentiation continues, vimentin is normally down-regulated whereas other intermediate filament proteins, like desmin, glial fibrillary acidic protein, or neurofilaments are turned on in muscle, glial cells, or neurons, respectively. In some metastatic cancers, including breast and prostate cancers, vimentin is aberrantly expressed, despite the embryonic origin …
Expression, Purification And Characterization Of Hepatitis C Virus Core Protein From E.Coli Using A Chemically Synthesized Gene (1), And Cloning, Expression, Purification And Characterization Of The Major Core Protein (P26) From Equine Infectious Anaemia Virus, Ashley James Birkett
Theses and Dissertations
The hepatitis c virus (HCV) core gene has been chemically synthesized and used to direct the expression of core protein in Escherichia coli (E.coli). When cloned downstream of the inducible T7 promotor the core gene directed the expression of a soluble protein with a molecular weight of 22 kDa. Under native conditions the protein behaved in a manner consistent with the formation of a multimeric structure, which may represent assembled core particles. Further, when examined by electron microscopy a heterogeneous mixture of nucleocapsid-like particles were visible. Core protein was specifically recognized by antibodies present in HCV infected serum, suggesting that …
Cloning, Expression, Purification And Characterization Of Domain B Of Wheat Germ Agglutinin, Ann C. Rice
Cloning, Expression, Purification And Characterization Of Domain B Of Wheat Germ Agglutinin, Ann C. Rice
Theses and Dissertations
Wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) belongs to a family of dimeric chitin binding lectins specific for N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc) and N-acetyl-D-neuraminic acid (NeuNAc). The polypeptide chain consists of a tandem repeat of four conserved 4.3 kDa domains (A, B, C, D) stabilized by four disulfide bonds. Saccharide binding occurs in the dimer interface where domains of different subunits are in contact (A with D, B with C). An aromatic amino acid rich pocket on one domain (sufficient for saccharide binding) and a polar region on the contacting domain constitute a complete binding site. Saccharide binding affinities may differ among the four unique …
Vcu Voice (1993-12-06)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
