Electrodeposited Silica Thin Films, Debbie Campbell-Rance
Electrodeposited Silica Thin Films, Debbie Campbell-Rance
Theses and Dissertations
Sol-gel derived silica thin film synthesis has gained prominence because of the mild processing conditions and widespread understanding of the chemistry of the process. Traditionally, silicate films are prepared by spin- and dip-coating but these materials lack the desired porosity for sensing, separations and catalysis applications. Electrochemical deposition was proposed to improve the porosity of silicate films. The main aims of this work were threefold. First we wanted to elucidate what parameters influenced film formation during electrodeposition. Then we wanted to understand how these parameters affected the morphology of the materials prepared. These films were characterized by profilometry, AFM, and …
Polytrauma Family Needs Assessment, Schaaf Kathryn Wilder
Polytrauma Family Needs Assessment, Schaaf Kathryn Wilder
Theses and Dissertations
There is a great deal of literature in civilian rehabilitation settings that documents the tremendous impact a brain injury has on both the injured person and the family as a whole. TBI is a leading cause of both death and disability world-wide and is often cited as the signature injury of the ongoing OEF/OIF conflict. In 2005, Congress recognized the severity of injuries that military personnel were encountering in the OEF/OIF conflicts and created the Polytrauma System of Care (PSC). While the PSC has made great efforts to provide innovative and effective treatment for active duty and veteran patients, little …
Hunger For Grace: The Association Between Eating Disorders And Religiousness, Janet Lydecker
Hunger For Grace: The Association Between Eating Disorders And Religiousness, Janet Lydecker
Theses and Dissertations
Religiousness is one potential, understudied psychosocial correlate of eating disorders. To assess associations between religiousness and eating disorders, this study developed the Religious Attendance and Belief Scale (Rel-AB), and examined its psychometric properties. Women from a large population-based sample (N = 1510; M(age) = 42.5) completed subscales measuring (1) belief in a personal and loving God, and (2) attendance at religion-related activities, as well as eating disorder measures. Belief was negatively associated with eating disorder symptomatology among women meeting broadly defined criteria for bulimia nervosa. Eating disorders and religiousness were not associated in the overall sample, and associations were largely …
In The Blink Of An Eye, Alice Barnett
In The Blink Of An Eye, Alice Barnett
Theses and Dissertations
Artist Statement My art is where I go to relax, rebuild, and replenish. It is an escape that allows me to remember a simpler time of traveling and watching my daughters grow. It is through these images that I find my focus in the beauty of nature and the love of being a mother. In my work I strive to emphasize the contrast of textures and colors in a shell, or the way light from a sunrise dances across the waves and sand. Life and our environments change quickly and should be remembered and shared with the next generation. Through …
Finding Beauty, Amanda Wright
Finding Beauty, Amanda Wright
Theses and Dissertations
My relationships and my environment define my life and my art. Through the use of collage and mixed media I express these relationships and places by making cut-outs from calendars, art books, and magazines. My collages were originally inspired by my own personal photography and memories of the area where I grew up, the Adirondack Mountains. As I expanded my techniques, I also began to find beauty in other environments.
Out Of Shape, Out Of Line: East Meets West, Claudia Weisner-Combecher
Out Of Shape, Out Of Line: East Meets West, Claudia Weisner-Combecher
Theses and Dissertations
My art is about reduction, simplicity, and color. I use geometric or organic shapes, straight or flowing lines, and bright colors. All of these elements are reduced to their minimal essence. In my paintings, I like to show the creative process by layering paints and exposing subsurface materials and textures. This allows room for contemplation and interpretation. On one hand, my art is influenced by my appreciation for Minimalist art, an art form of visual simplicity in form and content. On the other hand, my art is inspired by my interest in Asian art, intensified by a recent trip to …
Vignettes, Jennifer Lauzon
Vignettes, Jennifer Lauzon
Theses and Dissertations
In my clay, mixed media, and photographic work I present vignettes of my life and aspects of my heritage to the viewer. While working with clay, I create houses that personify different aspects of my personality, depending on what was happening in my life at the time. I also make pots that reflect elements of my environment. My mixed media and digital photography work is a more intimate look at my Middle Eastern heritage from belly dancing to snapshots of my family.
In My Busby Berkeley Dreams, Michael Pierce
In My Busby Berkeley Dreams, Michael Pierce
Theses and Dissertations
I use high- and low-tech approaches in my drawings and bookart to address issues of sexual identity and beauty. My work emphasizes process, content, and image. I create pictures using tightly cropped symbolic figurative imagery. I also leave smudges, smears, and traces of what happened in the making of the work to make process more visible. In my work I would like you to consider what you see and what you don’t see, to smile in recognition of something you might never have really thought about before. And when I really get it right, you might even question your own …
A Brush With Nature, Laurie Hoen
A Brush With Nature, Laurie Hoen
Theses and Dissertations
My work investigates both the objective and the subjective nature of my intimate relationship with nature. I explore my embrace of both art and science, the realistic and the abstract in my search for the immanence of goodness in creation. From a grain of pollen to a beautiful blossom to a decaying pod, the natural world celebrates life’s insistence on recreating itself. All around me, nature is quietly dancing to a peaceful song of restoration and balance that offers me hope of a continuance and beauty in spite of the neglect I sometimes offer in return. My recent work, in …
Symbolism And Art, Sylvia Swoboda
Symbolism And Art, Sylvia Swoboda
Theses and Dissertations
I am interested in communication through symbolism. The symbols that I incorporate in my mixed media work are simplified into essential lines and shapes. I use the Kabbalah’s Tree of Life diagram as a structure to hold my own personal symbols. These symbols are my interpretation of the phases of life. I also use prehistoric symbols such as the spiral, circle, square, triangle, and cross as a focus to emphasize the beauty of these very basic lines and shapes which we see all around our world. To emphasize the beauty of symbols I use repetition, color, and texture. Life is …

Role Of Jak/Stat Pathway In The Pathogenesis Of Breast Cancer, Qifang Zhang
Role Of Jak/Stat Pathway In The Pathogenesis Of Breast Cancer, Qifang Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
The Jak/Stat signaling cascade mediates cell proliferation, differentiation, survival, apoptosis and immune responses. Aberrant activation of this pathway mediates neoplastic transformation and abnormal growth of many malignancies including breast cancer, the most common cancer among women, and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women in United States. The mechanism by which the Jak/Stat pathway modulates the pathogenesis of breast cancer is unclear. This dissertation elucidates roles of Jak/Stat members that mediate the pathogenesis of breast cancer. For these studies, we used 4T1 mouse mammary tumor cells as a model which mimics human breast cancer. First, we investigated the …
Places On Earth, Holly Smith
Places On Earth, Holly Smith
Theses and Dissertations
My textile work is about noticing the beauty of natural creation from extreme perspectives. I reference the patchwork quality of landscapes by finding the lines, patterns and color fields in aerial photography and translating them into a textile medium. Looking at land and water from an airborne vantage point feels like reading a good poem. I can’t quite determine the precise meaning but the individual phrases and their arrangement in a composition send a shiver of pleasure up my spine. In the same way, I can’t exactly identify what I’m seeing from afar, but the beauty of the parts relating …

Recapitulating Osteoblastogenesis With Electrospun Fibrinogen Nanofibers And Adipose Stem Cells And Electrospinning Adipose Tissue-Derived Basement Membrane, Michael Francis
Theses and Dissertations
To repair, replace, or regenerate damaged or diseased tissue has been a long-standing, albeit elusive, goal in medical research. Here, we characterize patient-derivable mesenchymal stem cell types, termed adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs). These cells, which can be derived from liposuction fat and lipoaspirate saline, are sources for patient-derivable extracellular matrix (ECM), fibrinogen (Fg) and adipose tissue extracellular matrix, and may prove useful for synthesizing new bone tissue analogues in vitro. Traditionally and rapidly isolated ASCs were thoroughly characterized as multipotent, having osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic differentiation potential, and they exhibited comparable proliferative lifespans. These ASCs also shared an indistinguishable immunophenotype …
