Forgotten, Found, Forgiven, Megan Mattax
Forgotten, Found, Forgiven, Megan Mattax
Theses and Dissertations
My work deals with loss and the emotions entangled with grief. To do this, I incorporate text, found organic imagery, bound fibers, and hand-spun threads into my work. I relate these objects and materials to the stages of a woman’s life, which is a symbolic reference to the nymph, mother, and crone and the transformation from life to death. The background surface of information in my two-dimensional work serves as a cryptic guide to the actual meaning of things. All the excerpted information comes from medical or general knowledge dictionaries. This ground of text is methodically planned but also spontaneously …
A Tale To Tell: The Charisma Of Narrative Art, Cynthia Mirabile
A Tale To Tell: The Charisma Of Narrative Art, Cynthia Mirabile
Theses and Dissertations
My artwork combines the power of narrative with the sculptural form, and I encourage the viewer to interact with my work. I use the magnetic, hypnotic effect that stories can have over us. My narratives are designed to draw the reader into a willing suspension of disbelief. It is often whimsical because childlike things give people certain permissions of joy and abandon. I use anthropomorphism to invite the viewer to handle my pieces in order to create an intimacy between the viewer and the artwork.
Drug Design, Biological Activity, And Metabolic Consequences Of Cytotoxic Platinum Compounds: Utilizing Fluorescent Tagging To Understand Drug Action And Metabolism, Brad Benedetti
Theses and Dissertations
Platinum drugs are among the most commonly used chemotherapeutics for the treatment of testicular, head and neck, ovarian, small cell lung, and colorectal carcinomas. Although the current set of platinum chemotherapeutics has proven somewhat successful, the overall success of platinum based drugs is limited due to acquired drug resistance and a limited range of tumor types that are treatable with the current regime. The development of novel cytotoxic platinum based compounds, both trans- and polynuclear, provides for the promising treatment of clinical platinum drug resistant tumors. While the cytotoxic activity of platinum drugs provides for a hopeful outlook, the ultimate …
Cycles Of Nature, Heather Darby
Cycles Of Nature, Heather Darby
Theses and Dissertations
My work focuses on my physical connection to the earth. I translate what I see and visualize in nature into graphic shapes and patterns using textiles, fibers, and paints. Further, I interweave these materials through a variety of techniques, and I incorporate sewn lines to create compositions highlighting natural elements that depict the course of life. I employ a hands-on, low technology approach. This tactic contrasts my work as a professional graphic designer. While my professional efforts generally lack a physical connection with nature, due to digital simulations of real objects, my personal artwork allows me to step away from …
Cold War Educational Propaganda And Instructional Films, 1945-1965, Claire Hope
Cold War Educational Propaganda And Instructional Films, 1945-1965, Claire Hope
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will examine the response of educators to the use of the American public school system for ideological management during the early Cold War period. Through an assessment of instructional films, this work will show that the objectives of educational propaganda fell into three main categories: to promote Americanism as the national ideology, to deter students from communism or communist sympathy, and to link the potential for nuclear warfare to ideological lassitude. It will be argued that although the majority of educators accepted these goals, as films became increasingly extreme in their presentations, a critical minority revealed discontent with …
Iain Baxter& And N.E. Thing Co.: A Study In Pop-Inflected Conceptual Art, Dennis Durham
Iain Baxter& And N.E. Thing Co.: A Study In Pop-Inflected Conceptual Art, Dennis Durham
Theses and Dissertations
The Canadian artist IAIN BAXTER&, known before 2005 as Iain Baxter, created an innovative Conceptual Art practice in the mid-60s that continues to make important contributions even today. He has maintained a strong collaborative element in his art, as witnessed by his role in the short-lived group IT (1965) and N.E. THING CO. (1966-1978)--an actual incorporated company consisting of BAXTER& and his first wife, Ingrid Baxter as chief officers--and by the addition of an ampersand to his legal name in 2005 to signify the open-ended quality of his work that relies on viewers‘ contributions to help determine its meaning. This …
Beating Back Babylon, Nicholas Candela
Beating Back Babylon, Nicholas Candela
Theses and Dissertations
My processes and techniques are driven by the need to explore and to understand my own hesitations and convictions about our world. Initially, I began addressing these needs in my artwork using acrylic paint and sandpaper. This led me to investigate a variety of media including ink, transfers, and oil-based paints, as well as different solvents, cleaners, and varnishes, all to create or remove layers. Through this variety of media, I have come to discover that what matters most to me is the physical process of art-making. Each decision I make is done with regard to the additive elements of …
The Land Of Make-Believe, Lacey Bowman
The Land Of Make-Believe, Lacey Bowman
Theses and Dissertations
My artwork represents the playful and imaginative phase of life I went through as a young child. My cluttered bedroom floor doubled as a castle courtyard for a princess and her ladies-in-waiting. The unused space in my parent’s garage operated as a gourmet restaurant open to serve the finest cuisine. The fancy skirts, jewelry, and shoes that filled my mother’s closet were the tools for creating my ultimate fantasyland, in which I was already a successful grown up. My work is meant to convey the make-believe mindset from my childhood. To this day, I am inspired by the fluttering excitement …
Journey, Michael Mcgaugh
Journey, Michael Mcgaugh
Theses and Dissertations
My art explores the traditional elements of line, value, and texture. I use pencil and charcoal to create my drawings, and use the computer to alter and enhance my photographs. I also explore the relationships created through the combination of traditional and digital processes. Through the process of drawing, scanning, and layering images on the computer, I reveal details created by the contrast of these media. My goal is to successfully combine and balance traditional art practices with digital technology.
Characterization And Genetic Analysis Of The Cellulolytic Microorganism Thermobifida Fusca, Yu Deng
Characterization And Genetic Analysis Of The Cellulolytic Microorganism Thermobifida Fusca, Yu Deng
Theses and Dissertations
Currently, one of the hurdles hindering efficient production of cellulosic biofuel is the recalcitrant nature of cellulose to hydrolysis. A wide variety of cellulase enzymes are found natively in microorganisms that can potentially be used to effectively hydrolyze cellulose to fermentable sugars. Thermobifida fusca is a high G-C content, thermophilic, gram-positive soil actinobacterium with high cellulolytic activity. The phenomenological and mechanistic parameters affecting cellulase activity were studied in T. fusca and two mechanisms have been found: 1) transcriptions of cellulase-related genes were not closely associated with measured differences in cellulase activity and 2) cellular energetics (intracellular ATP) correlated more closely …
This Time Tomorrow And Other Painted Stories, Faylinda Kodis
This Time Tomorrow And Other Painted Stories, Faylinda Kodis
Theses and Dissertations
My visual vocabulary is drawn from the language of fairytales and dreams and includes animals, birds, tambourines, scrolled railings, clumps of flowers, clocks, bubbles, and people. I include symbols that resonate for me or, through its shape, solve a formal compositional problem. The images are pieced together in a collage-like manner and juxtaposed without regard to real world concerns of place, size, and scale. The resulting stories have a surreal appearance. My goal is to create drawings and paintings that reveal a personal, expressive reality.
Diary, Melanie Kluender
Diary, Melanie Kluender
Theses and Dissertations
My work reflects the change, growth, metamorphosis, duality, and balance that exists in my life. I focus on the process of change and necessity for adaptation. I’m interested in finding balance among the chaos of everyday living. I’m an observer, an introvert, and a thinker. I see and experience opposing forces all around me. Some are simple observations, such as good versus evil, chaos versus order, organic versus geometric, while some are more personal, such as anxiety versus depression, conflict between the inner versus outer self, disorganization versus obsessive compulsive. I’m fascinated by the delicate point at which opposing forces …
Experience Of Supervision Scale: The Development Of An Instrument To Measure Child Welfare Workers' Experience Of Supervisory Behaviors, Mary Parente
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to develop and test the Experience of Supervision Scale, which measures the experience of supervisory behaviors from the perspective of child welfare workers. Child welfare supervision is gaining increased attention as states struggle to improve performance measures of their child welfare systems. However, the lack of a standardized instrument which measures supervision through an analysis of supervisory behaviors from the supervisee’s perspective has hindered efforts in these areas. The Experience of Supervision Scale is based on Kadushin’s three function casework supervision model of supervision (administrative, educational, and supportive) which was chosen as the theoretical …
Relations Among Media, Eating Pathology And Body Dissatisfaction In College Women, Carrie Bair
Relations Among Media, Eating Pathology And Body Dissatisfaction In College Women, Carrie Bair
Theses and Dissertations
Research has identified a relation between exposure to thin-ideal magazine and television media images and eating disorder pathology. However, few studies have examined the potential influence of Internet media on eating disorder behaviors and attitudes. This study investigated the associations among appearance-orientated media exposure, body dissatisfaction, eating pathology and thin-ideal internalization in a sample of 421 female undergraduate students. Results indicate that undergraduate women spend significantly more time viewing appearance-oriented sources online, rather than reading appearance-orientated magazines. Appearance-oriented Internet consumption was also more strongly associated with eating disorder pathology than was use of other media (television and magazines). Relations between …
Identification And Characterization Of Low Ph-Triggered Conformational Changes In The Herpes Simplex Virus Glycoprotein B, Stephen Dollery
Identification And Characterization Of Low Ph-Triggered Conformational Changes In The Herpes Simplex Virus Glycoprotein B, Stephen Dollery
Theses and Dissertations
Herpesviruses can enter host cells by pH-dependent endocytic pathways in a cell-specific manner. The role of pH in herpesvirus endocytosis is unclear. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a paradigm for virus membrane fusion via a complex of glycoproteins. HSV glycoproteins B, D and the heterodimer H-L are necessary and sufficient for membrane fusion. This work analyzes the structure and function of HSV glycoproteins B, D, and H-L at neutral pH, and at the physiological low-pH encountered during endocytic entry. It is demonstrated that mildly acidic low pH triggers specific conformational changes in HSV gB at a pH of 5.7 to …
Fused, Lauren Cifranic
Fused, Lauren Cifranic
Theses and Dissertations
I use encaustic, wire, and oil paint on wooden boxes and panels. I am interested in the process of layering media. These forms evolve as previous marks are concealed, added to, and concealed again while intuitively creating forms. With this body of work I explore confinement and freedom. Therefore, some of the shapes and forms seem contained while others appear to break away from their boundaries.
Drips, Brigette Newberry
Drips, Brigette Newberry
Theses and Dissertations
Artist Statement My work is intuitive and process oriented. It begins by layering images on top of small stacks of patterned paper or cloth. These images consist of drawings or photographs of organic, natural objects that I have drawn or photographed and then printed. With a sewing machine, I sew through all the layers in stacks using the lines that I find interesting on the top image. Then I cut into the layered stacks to reveal the new images from all of the new juxtapositions and associations as they reveal themselves during the cutting process. I intuitively search for the …
An Iron Catalyst: Virginia’S Roadside Historical Markers And The Shaping Of A Historical Consciousness, Joseph Bayless
An Iron Catalyst: Virginia’S Roadside Historical Markers And The Shaping Of A Historical Consciousness, Joseph Bayless
Theses and Dissertations
The thesis analyzes the origins and the formative period of Virginia’s historical marker program. It shows that historical markers were critical to the success of Harry Flood Byrd’s administration and his Commission on Conservation and Development. The thesis also examines how Virginia’s marker program set the standard for roadside commemoration across the entire United States. Lastly, the work appraises the influence of Dr. Hamilton James Eckenrode, his pioneering methods of historical commemoration, and his central role in the success of Virginia’s marker program.
