Univercity News (1998-08-17)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Clinical Utility Of Ca125 Levels In Predicting Laparoscopically Confirmed Salpingitis In Patients With Clinically Diagnosed Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, E. Moore, D. E. Soper Jan 1998

Clinical Utility Of Ca125 Levels In Predicting Laparoscopically Confirmed Salpingitis In Patients With Clinically Diagnosed Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, E. Moore, D. E. Soper

Obstetrics and Gynecology Publications

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of serum CA125 determinations in diagnosing acute salpingitis.

Methods: CA125 levels were determined for 34 women with the clinical diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Acute salpingitis was confirmed laparoscopically in 28 women (82.3%).

Results: Twenty patients (71.4%) with laparoscopically confirmed acute salpingitis had CA125 levels greater than 7.5 units, compared with no patients (0/6) with laparoscopically normal tubes (P = 0.002). The degree of elevation of CA125 levels correlated with the severity of tubal inflammation noted at laparoscopy. All patients with levels above 16 units had laparoscopically severe …

BACKGROUND

Although trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole is the drug of choice for the prevention of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, many patients cannot tolerate it and must switch to an alternative agent.

METHODS

We conducted a multicenter, open-label, randomized trial comparing daily atovaquone (1500-mg suspension) with daily dapsone (100 mg) for the prevention of P. carinii pneumonia among patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus who could not tolerate trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole. The median follow-up period was 27 months.

RESULTS

Of 1057 patients enrolled, 298 had a history of P. carinii pneumonia.P. cariniipneumonia developed in 122 of 536 patients assigned to atovaquone (15.7 cases per …

Cervicitis As A Clinical Indicator Of Gonococcal And Chlamydial Infections In Pregnancy, Susan L. Jackson, Nan G. O'Connell, Joseph F. Borzelleca, Mara J. Dinsmoor, David E. Soper

Obstetrics and Gynecology Publications

Objective: We undertook the present study to attempt to apply clinical indicators predictive of cervical infection in nongravid populations with either Neisseria gonorrhoeae or Chlamydia trachomatis to our pregnant population and to determine the significance of the clinical diagnosis of “cervicitis.”

Methods: A retrospective chart review of all pregnant women with a final diagnosis of cervicitis who were seen in the Medical College of Virginia obstetrical emergency room was performed during the period of September 1991 to December 1992.

Results: Given the diagnosis of cervicitis in our emergency department, we found that the clinical examination predicted cervical infection with N. …
