Therapeutic Drugs In Cancer And Resistance., Aditi Pandya Martin
Therapeutic Drugs In Cancer And Resistance., Aditi Pandya Martin
Theses and Dissertations
We investigated the mechanism of toxicity and resistance development of small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor lapatinib in HCT 116 colon cancer cells. Lapatinib mediated cell death in HCT 116 cells was caspase independent and involved cytosolic release of apoptosis inducing factor. Treatment of HCT 116 cells with 10µM Lapatinib lead to the outgrowth of lapatinib resistant HCT 116 cells. Our studies show that alterations in the expression and activation of Bcl-2 family proteins allow lapatinib resistant HCT 116 cells to resist cytotoxic effects of lapatinib as well as of other commonly used chemotherapeutic agents. In hepatoma and pancreatic cancer cells, …

Parental Competencies Of Juvenile Probationers And Adherence To Curt Sanctions And Recidivism Rates, Amy Cook
Parental Competencies Of Juvenile Probationers And Adherence To Curt Sanctions And Recidivism Rates, Amy Cook
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this exploratory study was to further investigate the notion of parental competencies through the use of the Juvenile Offender Parent Questionnaire as previously developed by Rose and colleagues (2004). The parent questionnaire was administered to 88 parents of juvenile probationers placed on probation in a Virginia county. Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed an eight-factor solution: parental exasperation, parental resignation, mistrust of the juvenile justice system, shame over parenting efficacy, parental monitoring, fear of the child, parent perceptions of child’s exposure to violence, and anger towards child. Regression analyses indicate that parental exasperation and parental resignation were not significant …

The purpose of this study was to compare shear bond strengths of brackets bonded to stainless steel crowns using various orthodontic adhesives and surface conditioning techniques. One hundred and twenty mandibular first molar stainless steel crowns were randomly divided into groups: (1): Aluminablasting + Metal Primer + Assure; (2): Aluminablasting + Silane Coupling Agent + Transbond; (3): Diamond Bur Abrasion + Metal Primer + Assure; (4): Diamond Bur Abrasion + Silane Coupling Agent + Transbond; (5: control): Acid Etching + Metal Primer + Assure; (6: control): Acid Etching + Silane Coupling Agent + Transbond. Bond strength was tested using a …
Influence Of Parental Substance Abuse On Substance Use And Psychiatric Severity In Drug-Dependent Pregnant Women, Courtney E. Smith
Influence Of Parental Substance Abuse On Substance Use And Psychiatric Severity In Drug-Dependent Pregnant Women, Courtney E. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between history of parental substance abuse and substance use and psychiatric severity measures in a sample of treatment-seeking, pregnant women who meet DSM-IIIR criteria for lifetime opioid and cocaine abuse and/or dependence (N=260). The study examined whether a dose-response relationship was observed between number of parents affected by substance use problems (0, 1, and 2) and degree of women’s substance use and psychiatric severity. Results did not support a dose-response relationship between density of parental problems and substance use and psychiatric severity. However, some differences in severity were seen at …

The Approximation Rule: Examining An Alternative To The “Best Interest Of The Child” Custody Standard, Elizabeth Archer
The Approximation Rule: Examining An Alternative To The “Best Interest Of The Child” Custody Standard, Elizabeth Archer
Theses and Dissertations
While the Best Interest of the Child (BIOC) standard has been used since the 1970’s, alternatives such as the Approximation Rule have recently been proposed to remediate perceived weaknesses in BIOC. This study examines the applicability of the Approximation Rule using cross-sectional data collected from 517 children (age 10-18) of divorced parents using the Co-Parenting Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ). Data for all co-parenting and parenting variables (n = 517) were analyzed to determine relationships by time since divorce and custodial relationship. Physical custody was associated with significant differences in children’s’ ratings of both co-parenting and parenting effectiveness. Results for time since …

Position Concordant - Haptic Mouse, Ravi Rastogi
Theses and Dissertations
Haptic mice, computer mice modified to have a tactile display, have been developed to enable access to computer graphics by individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Although these haptic mice are potentially very helpful and have been frequently used by the research community, there are some fundamental problems with the mouse, limiting its acceptance. In this paper we have identified the problems and have suggested solutions using one haptic mouse, the VT Player. We found that our modified VT Player showed significant improvement both in terms of the odds of obtaining a correct responses and the time to perform …

Evaluating Oral, Non-Combustible Potential Reduced Exposure Products Marketed To Smokers, Caroline Cobb
Evaluating Oral, Non-Combustible Potential Reduced Exposure Products Marketed To Smokers, Caroline Cobb
Theses and Dissertations
Potential reduced exposure products (PREPs) are marketed to reduce smoking’s harm, despite little information concerning their effects. This study adapts previously reported clinical laboratory methods used to evaluate combustible PREPs to investigate the acute effects of four non-combustible PREPs (Ariva, Camel Snus, Marlboro Snus, Commit nicotine lozenge) relative to own brand cigarettes, sham smoking, and one combustible PREP that delivers no measurable nicotine (Quest). Twenty-eight smokers participated in 7 Latin-squared ordered, 2.5-hr sessions in which each product was administered twice (60-minute inter-administration interval). Sessions differed by product and were separated by > 48 hours. Plasma nicotine, heart rate, expired air carbon …
Responding To The Plague Years: Aids Theatre In The 1980s, Jason Campbell
Responding To The Plague Years: Aids Theatre In The 1980s, Jason Campbell
Theses and Dissertations
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was first discovered in 1981 and consequently changed United States history. Initially, it affected the gay community, and the United States Government did not actively combat the spread of the disease for the first four years of the epidemic. In response to a need for education, the theatre community took it upon itself to raise awareness about the disease. Artists such as Robert Chesley and Larry Kramer created pieces of theatre that helped society deal with AIDS. This thesis explores the AIDS theatre canon while focusing on two major works: Robert Chesley’s Night Sweat: A …
Predictors Of Discrepancies In Parents’ And Children’S Reports Of Child Emotion Regulation, Shannon Hourigan
Predictors Of Discrepancies In Parents’ And Children’S Reports Of Child Emotion Regulation, Shannon Hourigan
Theses and Dissertations
The ability to effectively regulate one’s emotions has been linked with many aspects of well-being. However, disagreement in parents’ and children’s reports of children’s emotion regulation presents significant measurement and conceptual challenges. This investigation aimed to identify predictors of these discrepancies from among demographic, psychopathology, and child emotional awareness measures and to examine patterns of discrepancies among three emotion types (i.e., anger, sadness, and worry) and three regulation “strategies” (i.e., inhibition, dysregulated expression, and coping). Sixty-one mother-child dyads (41 girls, mean age 9.3 years) participated. As hypothesized, age, child and parent report of psychopathology, and poor emotion awareness all emerged …

Background
High blood pressure or hypertension is a major risk factor involved in the development of cardiovascular diseases. We conducted genome-wide variance component linkage analyses to search for loci influencing five blood pressure related traits including the quantitative traits systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and pulse pressure (PP), the dichotomous trait hypertension (HT) and the bivariate quantitative trait SBP-DBP in families residing in American Samoa and Samoa, as well as in the combined sample from the two polities. We adjusted the traits for a number of environmental covariates such as smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and material …
