The Influences Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 Expression On Glioblastoma Pathology, Nicholas Pullen
The Influences Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 Expression On Glioblastoma Pathology, Nicholas Pullen
Theses and Dissertations
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive central nervous system (CNS) cancer characterized by enhanced tumor cell motility, pernicious invasion into the normal brain, extensive tumor-induced angiogenesis, and adaptive resistance to current therapeutic paradigms. One of the difficulties associated with GBM is the ability of the tumor cells to infiltrate normal CNS tissue. Neurosurgeons can remove the primary tumor mass, but peripheral cells that are inaccessible will ultimately result in a secondary lesion that can lead to death. The matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are well known for their abilities to facilitate processes of cellular motility and invasion through their clearance of extracellular …
Polytrauma Family Needs Assessment, Schaaf Kathryn Wilder
Polytrauma Family Needs Assessment, Schaaf Kathryn Wilder
Theses and Dissertations
There is a great deal of literature in civilian rehabilitation settings that documents the tremendous impact a brain injury has on both the injured person and the family as a whole. TBI is a leading cause of both death and disability world-wide and is often cited as the signature injury of the ongoing OEF/OIF conflict. In 2005, Congress recognized the severity of injuries that military personnel were encountering in the OEF/OIF conflicts and created the Polytrauma System of Care (PSC). While the PSC has made great efforts to provide innovative and effective treatment for active duty and veteran patients, little …
Hunger For Grace: The Association Between Eating Disorders And Religiousness, Janet Lydecker
Hunger For Grace: The Association Between Eating Disorders And Religiousness, Janet Lydecker
Theses and Dissertations
Religiousness is one potential, understudied psychosocial correlate of eating disorders. To assess associations between religiousness and eating disorders, this study developed the Religious Attendance and Belief Scale (Rel-AB), and examined its psychometric properties. Women from a large population-based sample (N = 1510; M(age) = 42.5) completed subscales measuring (1) belief in a personal and loving God, and (2) attendance at religion-related activities, as well as eating disorder measures. Belief was negatively associated with eating disorder symptomatology among women meeting broadly defined criteria for bulimia nervosa. Eating disorders and religiousness were not associated in the overall sample, and associations were largely …
Teacher Absenteeism: An Examination Of Patterns And Predictors, Kristy Pitts
Teacher Absenteeism: An Examination Of Patterns And Predictors, Kristy Pitts
Theses and Dissertations
Since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) in 2001, public school systems have been engaged in a system of educational reform fueled by a level of accountability that includes not only the performance of the students, but also the performance of the teachers and the administrators. Recent studies have found that student achievement has been negatively impacted by teacher absenteeism; however, there have been scant studies conducted in the United States regarding teacher absence behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine the teacher absence data of a school division in central Virginia in order …
In The Blink Of An Eye, Alice Barnett
In The Blink Of An Eye, Alice Barnett
Theses and Dissertations
Artist Statement My art is where I go to relax, rebuild, and replenish. It is an escape that allows me to remember a simpler time of traveling and watching my daughters grow. It is through these images that I find my focus in the beauty of nature and the love of being a mother. In my work I strive to emphasize the contrast of textures and colors in a shell, or the way light from a sunrise dances across the waves and sand. Life and our environments change quickly and should be remembered and shared with the next generation. Through …
A Brush With Nature, Laurie Hoen
A Brush With Nature, Laurie Hoen
Theses and Dissertations
My work investigates both the objective and the subjective nature of my intimate relationship with nature. I explore my embrace of both art and science, the realistic and the abstract in my search for the immanence of goodness in creation. From a grain of pollen to a beautiful blossom to a decaying pod, the natural world celebrates life’s insistence on recreating itself. All around me, nature is quietly dancing to a peaceful song of restoration and balance that offers me hope of a continuance and beauty in spite of the neglect I sometimes offer in return. My recent work, in …
Bayesian And Frequentist Approaches For The Analysis Of Multiple Endpoints Data Resulting From Exposure To Multiple Health Stressors., Epiphanie Nyirabahizi
Bayesian And Frequentist Approaches For The Analysis Of Multiple Endpoints Data Resulting From Exposure To Multiple Health Stressors., Epiphanie Nyirabahizi
Theses and Dissertations
In risk analysis, Benchmark dose (BMD)methodology is used to quantify the risk associated with exposure to stressors such as environmental chemicals. It consists of fitting a mathematical model to the exposure data and the BMD is the dose expected to result in a pre-specified response or benchmark response (BMR). Most available exposure data are from single chemical exposure, but living objects are exposed to multiple sources of hazards. Furthermore, in some studies, researchers may observe multiple endpoints on one subject. Statistical approaches to address multiple endpoints problem can be partitioned into a dimension reduction group and a dimension preservative group. …
Automated Measurement Of Midline Shift In Brain Ct Images And Its Application In Computer-Aided Medical Decision Making, Chen Wenan
Theses and Dissertations
The severity of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is known to be characterized by the shift of the middle line in brain as the ventricular system often changes in size and position, depending on the location of the original injury. In this thesis, the focus is given to processing of the CT (Computer Tomography) brain images to automatically calculate midline shift in pathological cases and use it to predict Intracranial Pressure (ICP). The midline shift measurement can be divided into three steps. First the ideal midline of the brain, i.e., the midline before injury, is found via a hierarchical search based …

Recapitulating Osteoblastogenesis With Electrospun Fibrinogen Nanofibers And Adipose Stem Cells And Electrospinning Adipose Tissue-Derived Basement Membrane, Michael Francis
Theses and Dissertations
To repair, replace, or regenerate damaged or diseased tissue has been a long-standing, albeit elusive, goal in medical research. Here, we characterize patient-derivable mesenchymal stem cell types, termed adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs). These cells, which can be derived from liposuction fat and lipoaspirate saline, are sources for patient-derivable extracellular matrix (ECM), fibrinogen (Fg) and adipose tissue extracellular matrix, and may prove useful for synthesizing new bone tissue analogues in vitro. Traditionally and rapidly isolated ASCs were thoroughly characterized as multipotent, having osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic differentiation potential, and they exhibited comparable proliferative lifespans. These ASCs also shared an indistinguishable immunophenotype …
