Effects Of Perceived Stigma From College Friends On Students Utilizing Mental Health Services, Shammah N. Okai
Effects Of Perceived Stigma From College Friends On Students Utilizing Mental Health Services, Shammah N. Okai
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
This paper explores the relationship between perceived stigma from friends and the use of mental health services. By reviewing six peer-reviewed articles it was hypothesized that there would be a negative correlation between the number of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Psychology 317 students who perceive that their friends had negative thoughts towards mental health services and the likelihood that those individuals would partake in mental health services. A convenience sample (N= 96) was taken from Dr. Cobb’s Psychology 317 class. A correlation was conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics 22. The results showed that there was a significant and weak positive correlation …
Using Platelet-Rich Plasma To Reverse The Effects Of Tendinopathy And Prevent Tendon Re-Rupture After Surgery In Athletes: The Search For A Standardized Protocol, Shiv Patel
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
30-50% of all lesions amateur and professional sports players will experience during activity are related to the tendon. Moreover, the incidence of tendinopathy, a precursor to tendon rupture, is much higher in both of these groups due to excessive loading of tendons during physical activity, insufficient rest afterwards and certain antibiotic use. The tendon anatomically has both a low blood supply and a low cell turnover rate, which contribute to the relative ease by which an athlete can develop tendinopathy. Chronic tendinopathy has very few high-success treatments but in recent years, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a treatment in which platelets are …
Aftermath Of The Hobby Lobby Decision: Implications For Women In The Workforce, Hirsh Shah
Aftermath Of The Hobby Lobby Decision: Implications For Women In The Workforce, Hirsh Shah
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
Hobby Lobby is a chain of 640 arts and crafts stores owned by the Green family, based in Oklahoma City. This company is required to follow the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which mandates that larger employers—those with more than 50 employees—have to include coverage for the full range of preventative care, including contraceptives, in their female employees’ health insurance plans. However, the Green family holds deeply religious views and did not want to include four of the twenty contraceptives covered by the ACA, including long acting reversible contraception and emergency contraception, in their female employee coverage. The family believed that …
Body Image Perception: Adolescent Boys And Avatar Depiction In Video Games, Usha Raman
Body Image Perception: Adolescent Boys And Avatar Depiction In Video Games, Usha Raman
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
Research on mass media’s impact on body image has mostly been focused on females thus far. Of the little research that has been done on male body image, most of it has been focused on adult males, and therefore the effect of mass media on adolescent boys’ body image is still a relatively primitive field of knowledge. Through comparing the exposure of adolescent boys to muscular avatars in popular video games, a source of mass media that a majority of adolescent boys are exposed to, and relating it to research done on the effects of frequent ideal image exposure through …
Improving Health Literacy: Parental Medical Decisions Regarding Lower Extremity Amputations, Rebecca Aber
Improving Health Literacy: Parental Medical Decisions Regarding Lower Extremity Amputations, Rebecca Aber
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
There are currently several injury severity scores, such as the LSI, MESI, MESS, and PSI that are used in the United States to form recommendations for limb amputation or reconstruction. These scores are based on data from adults, yet they are used for patients of all ages. Because parents with limited health literacy tend to make less informed medical decisions for their children regarding amputations, a pediatric version of a current injury severity score would help to guide these medical decisions. The pediatric version would be created from a pre-existing score by redesigning the variables used within the score. The …
Prenatal Nicotine Exposure As A Teratogen In Neurological Pathways, Monica Grover
Prenatal Nicotine Exposure As A Teratogen In Neurological Pathways, Monica Grover
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most heritable and commonly diagnosed childhood psychiatric disorder with 4% of all children being diagnosed with this disorder. Prenatal smoking has been found to be a risk factor for ADHD, a disorder that has been believed to be linked to the fluctuation of dopamine levels. Prenatal nicotine exposure in the second trimester influences dopaminergic neurological pathways by altering dopamine release levels. The altered dopamine levels make the fetus brain more sensitive to the nicotine, causing the nicotine exposure to be more dangerous in causing ADHD symptoms. Prenatal nicotine exposure alters the neurological pathway of the …

Ingan Leds For General Lighting: Overcoming Efficiency Droop At High Current Injection, Nicolas Andrade
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
According to the Energy Information Administration's Annual Energy Outlook report in 2011, the United States alone consumed 97.8 quadrillion Btus (quads) of primary energy in 2010. Roughly 41% of this energy was consumed for electricity use, with 18% of the electricity being dedicated to lighting. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated light consumption of this scale translates to CO2 production equivalent to 70% of the emissions from all of the world's light passenger vehicles. Pollution levels at this rate caused 18,200 premature deaths, 2,100,000 days of medication, and 29 million cases of lower respiratory symptoms.
The Role Of Patient And Physician In Establishing Patient-Physician Communication In The In-Patient Environment, Tamanna Sahni
The Role Of Patient And Physician In Establishing Patient-Physician Communication In The In-Patient Environment, Tamanna Sahni
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
Communication in the in-patient environment is crucial, and the relationship between a patient and physician can enhance patient health and improve overall wellness. Patients need to feel confident with their abilities in order to feel comfortable conversing with physicians, which would thus improve health and treat symptoms more effectively. This communication has decreased over time, hence patients are often are unable to obtain medical information from their healthcare providers. Are there psychological factors involved in a patient’s inability to communicate with a physician? What is the relationship between self-esteem and quality of patient-physician communication? In addition, what can physicians do …

ALS is a rapidly progressive, devastating neurodegenerative illness of adults that produces disabling weakness and spasticity arising from death of lower and upper motor neurons. No meaningful therapies exist to slow ALS progression, and molecular insights into pathogenesis and progression are sorely needed. In that context, we used high-depth, next generation RNA sequencing (RNAseq, Illumina) to define gene network abnormalities in RNA samples depleted of rRNA and isolated from cervical spinal cord sections of 7 ALS and 8 CTL samples. We aligned >50 million 2X150 bp paired-end sequences/sample to the hg19 human genome and applied three different algorithms (Cuffdiff2, DEseq2, …
Longitudinal Relations Between Emotional Awareness And Aggression In Early Adolescence: The Mediating Role Of Emotion Dysregulation, Benjamin V. Rosen
Longitudinal Relations Between Emotional Awareness And Aggression In Early Adolescence: The Mediating Role Of Emotion Dysregulation, Benjamin V. Rosen
Theses and Dissertations
High prevalence rates exist for physical (i.e., threatened or actual physical force) and relational (i.e., actions meant to harm another’s social relationships) aggression within early adolescence, and these behaviors lead to detrimental social, physical, and mental health outcomes. Thus, there is a need to identify risk and protective processes related to these subtypes of aggression, especially those that can inform violence prevention efforts. Prior studies including early adolescents have shown emotion dysregulation to be a risk factor for aggression. However, few studies have incorporated the emotional competence process of poor emotional awareness, which may be a risk factor for emotion …

Exploring Pharmacological And Behavioral Mechanisms Involved In Alcohol Dependence During Adolescence, Rabha Mousa Younis
Exploring Pharmacological And Behavioral Mechanisms Involved In Alcohol Dependence During Adolescence, Rabha Mousa Younis
Theses and Dissertations
Alcoholism is a serious illness that is marked by uncontrollable drinking and physical dependence to alcohol. Long-term alcoholism has been linked to many health concerns such as cirrhosis of the liver and cardiovascular disease. Alcohol is one of the most commonly used drugs among adolescent populations. Given that adolescence is a unique developmental stage during which alcohol has long-term effects on future drug-taking behavior; it is essential to understand how early exposure to alcohol during adolescence may affect the abuse liability of the drug later in life. Indeed, most alcohol users start during adolescence suggesting that exposure to alcohol during …
Efficiency Evaluation Of A Magnetically Driven Multiple Disk Centrifugal Blood Pump, Kayla H. Moody
Efficiency Evaluation Of A Magnetically Driven Multiple Disk Centrifugal Blood Pump, Kayla H. Moody
Theses and Dissertations
Heart failure is expected to ail over 8 million people in America by 2030 leaving many in need of cardiac replacement. To accommodate this large volume of people, ventricular assist devices (VADs) are necessary to provide mechanical circulatory support. Current VADs exhibit issues such as thrombosis and hemolysis caused by large local pressure drops and turbulent flow within the pump. Multiple disk centrifugal pumps (MDCPs) use shearing and centrifugal forces to produce laminar flow patterns and eliminate large pressure drops within the pump which greatly reduce risks that are in current VADs. The MDCP has a shaft drive system (SDS) …

Sensitivity Analysis In Handling Discrete Data Missing At Random In Hierarchical Linear Models Via Multivariate Normality, Xiyu Zheng
Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
In a two-level hierarchical linear model(HLM2), the outcome as well as covariates may have missing values at any of the levels. One way to analyze all available data in the model is to estimate a multivariate normal joint distribution of variables, including the outcome, subject to missingness conditional on covariates completely observed by maximum likelihood(ML); draw multiple imputation (MI) of missing values given the estimated joint model; and analyze the hierarchical model given the MI [1,2]. The assumption is data missing at random (MAR). While this method yields efficient estimation of the hierarchical model, it often estimates the model …
Using Semiphysiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic (Semi-Pbpk) Modeling To Explore The Impact Of Differences Between The Intravenous (Iv) And Oral (Po) Route Of Administration On The Magnitude And Time Course Of Cyp3a-Mediated Metabolic Drug-Drug Interactions (Ddi) Using Midazolam (Mdz) As Prototypical Substrate And Fluconazole (Flz) And Erythromycin (Ery) As Prototypical Inhibitors, Mengyao Li

The purpose of the project was to investigate the impact of IV and PO routes difference for MDZ, a prototypical CYP3A substrate, and two CYP3A inhibitors (CYP3AI) -FLZ and ERY-, on the magnitude and time course of their inhibitory metabolic DDI.
Individual semi-PBPK models for MDZ, FLZ and ERY were developed and validated separately, using pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters from clinical/in-vitro studies and published physiological parameters. Subsequently, DDI sub-models between MDZ and CYP3AIs incorporated non-competitive and mechanism-based inhibition (MBI) for FLZ and ERY, respectively, on hepatic and gut wall (GW) CYP3A metabolism of MDZ, using available in-vitro/in-vivo information. Model-simulated MDZ …
A Mechanistic Study Of An Ipsc Model For Leigh’S Disease Caused By Mtdna Mutataion (8993 T>G), John P. Galdun
A Mechanistic Study Of An Ipsc Model For Leigh’S Disease Caused By Mtdna Mutataion (8993 T>G), John P. Galdun
Theses and Dissertations
Mitochondrial diseases encompass a broad range of devastating disorders that typically affect tissues with high-energy requirements. These disorders have been difficult to diagnose and research because of the complexity of mitochondrial genetics, and the large variability seen among patient populations. We have devised and carried out a mechanistic study to generate a cell based model for Leigh’s disease caused by mitochondrial DNA mutation 8993 T>G. Leigh’s disease is a multi-organ system disorder that depends heavily on the mutation burden seen within various tissues. Using new reprogramming and sequencing technologies, we were able to show that Leigh’s disease patient fibroblasts …
Potential Treatments For Malformation Associated Epilepsy, Olivia M. Bowles
Potential Treatments For Malformation Associated Epilepsy, Olivia M. Bowles
Theses and Dissertations
Epilepsy has been previously attributed to either increased excitation or decreased inhibition. With this closed frame of mind, modern medicine has been unable to develop a permanent treatment against the mechanisms of epilepsy. In order to treat patients with intractable seizures, especially those caused by developmental malformations, it is essential to understand the entirety of mechanisms that could possibly play a role in the abnormal cortical function. One such developmental malformation is known as polymicrogyria. Epileptogenesis occurs in an area laterally adjacent to this malformation known as the paramicrogyral region (PMR). Past studies have narrowed down the potential cause of …

Understanding And Targeting The C-Terminal Binding Protein (Ctbp) Substrate-Binding Domain For Cancer Therapeutic Development, Benjamin L. Morris
Understanding And Targeting The C-Terminal Binding Protein (Ctbp) Substrate-Binding Domain For Cancer Therapeutic Development, Benjamin L. Morris
Theses and Dissertations
Cancer involves the dysregulated proliferation and growth of cells throughout the body. C-terminal binding proteins (CtBP) 1 and 2 are transcriptional co-regulators upregulated in several cancers, including breast, colorectal, and ovarian tumors. CtBPs drive oncogenic properties, including migration, invasion, proliferation, and survival, in part through repression of tumor suppressor genes. CtBPs encode an intrinsic dehydrogenase activity, utilizing intracellular NADH concentrations and the substrate 4-methylthio-2-oxobutyric acid (MTOB), to regulate the recruitment of transcriptional regulatory complexes. High levels of MTOB inhibit CtBP dehydrogenase function and induce cytotoxicity among cancer cells in a CtBP-dependent manner. While encouraging, a good therapeutic would utilize >100-fold …

Development And Characterization Of Lung Derived Extracellular Matrix Hydrogels, Robert A. Pouliot
Theses and Dissertations
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) including emphysema is a devastating condition, increasing in prevalence in the US and worldwide. There remains no cure for COPD, rather only symptomatic treatments. Due to unique challenges of the lung, translation of therapies for acute lung injury to target chronic lung diseases like COPD has not been successful. We have been investigating lung derived extracellular matrix (ECM) hydrogels as a novel approach for delivery of cellular therapies to the pulmonary system.
During the course of this work we have developed and characterized a lug derived ECM hydrogel that exhibits “injectability,” allowing cells or dugs …
An Injectable Stem Cell Delivery System For Treatment Of Musculoskeletal Defects, Shirae Leslie
An Injectable Stem Cell Delivery System For Treatment Of Musculoskeletal Defects, Shirae Leslie
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this research was to develop a system of injectable hydrogels to deliver stem cells to musculoskeletal defects, thereby allowing cells to remain at the treatment site and secrete soluble factors that will facilitate tissue regeneration. First, production parameters for encapsulating cells in microbeads were determined. This involved investigating the effects of osmolytes on alginate microbead properties, and the effects of alginate microbead cell density, alginate microbead density, and effects of osteogenic media on microencapsulated cells. Although cells remained viable in the microbeads, alginate does not readily degrade in vivo for six months. Therefore, a method to incorporate …
Stains Induce Apoptosis And Autophagy In Primary And Transformed Mast Cells, Patrick A. Paez
Stains Induce Apoptosis And Autophagy In Primary And Transformed Mast Cells, Patrick A. Paez
Theses and Dissertations
Statin drugs are widely employed in the clinic to reduce serum low density lipoproteins (LDLs) in patients with hypocholesteremia. In addition to their cholesterol-lowering effects through HMG CoA reductase antagonism, isoprenyl lipids necessary for membrane anchorage and signaling of small G-proteins are abrogated. We previously found that statins suppress mast cell activation in murine and human cells, suggesting these drugs might be useful in treating allergic disease. While mast cell function is critical to allergic inflammation, mast cell hyperplasia and survival also impact these diseases, and were not studied in our previous work. In this study, we describe Fluvastatin-mediated apoptosis …
