Editorial: Responsibilities Of Scientists--A Closer Look, Fairfield Goodale Jr. Jan 1966

Editorial: Responsibilities Of Scientists--A Closer Look, Fairfield Goodale Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

From a reading of today's lay and scientific press, one must conclude that scientists are most important people. And, indeed, the signs of their beneficence are on every hand--rapid travel, instant communication, globe-encircling rockets, moon probes, food surpluses, longer life spans, and all manner of creature comforts which by now are taken for granted. Verily, ours is the age of scientific marvels and we are in the debt of those who have made it possible.

The Future Effect Of The Computer And The Research Scientist On Medical Practice, Edward N. Brandt Jr. Jan 1966

The Future Effect Of The Computer And The Research Scientist On Medical Practice, Edward N. Brandt Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The computer is here. It has become a part of medicine. We have talked for a day and a half now about some of the applications of computers in medicine, and of the future of at least some of these applications. There is a language problem in communicating with computers, but certainly the future is going to see a medical language, comparable to the scientific language Fortran, built to enable physicians to communicate with the computer. The real advancements in computer application depend at least in part upon active use by physicians of computers. In closing, let me summarize by …

Cryocautery And Aqueous Humor Dynamics, Herbert Wiesinger Jan 1966

Cryocautery And Aqueous Humor Dynamics, Herbert Wiesinger

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

A method of cyclocryocautery, using the Kelman Cryostylet, is described. On rabbit eyes this brings about a statistically significant lowering of intraocular pressure and reduction of aqueous flow over an observation period of three months. The effects upon the facility of outflow are variable. Side effects are minimal. The intraocular temperature was measured at various points during and after cryocautery. An applicator temperature of about -40° C was found sufficient for the desired result with minimal side effects. Angiocryocautery of one or both long posterior ciliary vessels resulted only in a temporary reduction of intraocular pressure, as permanent obliteration of …

Reversible And Irreversible Effects Of Densely Ionizing Radiations Upon The Reproductive Capacity Of Cultured Human Cells, Paul Todd Jan 1966

Reversible And Irreversible Effects Of Densely Ionizing Radiations Upon The Reproductive Capacity Of Cultured Human Cells, Paul Todd

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Some aspects of the radiosensitivity of single human cells have been examined in vitro. So far, all factors which tend to modify sensitivity to x-radiation appear not to modify (or to modify less effectively) the effects upon single cells of high-dE/dx radiation. Whenever the hazards of heavily ionizing radiations are being evaluated, chronic exposure must be considered equivalent to acute exposure, and any attempts to modify the effects of densely ionizing radiations at the cellular level are probably useless. In the case of cultured human cells, the RBE is dependent upon the endpoint because of the differently-shaped survival curves. Thus, …

Pituitary Ablation For Diabetic Retinopathy, Olof H. Pearson Jan 1966

Pituitary Ablation For Diabetic Retinopathy, Olof H. Pearson

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Our clinical experience and the experience of others seems to indicate that pituitary ablation can induce a significant beneficial effect on the course of diabetic retinitis, even in advanced stages. We have no strict criteria for the selection of patients. When surgical hypophysectomy is being done, the major restriction is whether the patient has a fair chance of getting through the procedure without great risk of death or serious complication. With yttrium-implant hypophysectomy, the risk of death from the procedure itself has been practically eliminated. The morbidity would be much less if the rhinorrhea and the threat of meningitis could …

Cryosurgery Of The Pituitary Gland, William F. Collins Jr. Jan 1966

Cryosurgery Of The Pituitary Gland, William F. Collins Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In closing I would like to state that I believe that with stereocryohypophysectomy we have a simple, effective technique which can be utilized to alter pituitary function. It can be performed under local anesthesia and, is a safe and effective method for aid in the control of diabetic retinopathy.

Observations On Chromaffin Tissue, Hermann K. F. Blaschko

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

An attempt has been made to give in this article a review of some of our activities since I first met Ernst Fischer in Göttingen many years ago. I have not related the work of our laboratory to that of others. Also, I have only described observations made on chromaffin tissue. The catecholamines have acquired a much wider importance with their discovery in adrenergic neurones, and, more recently, in the central nervous system. However, the study of a more homogenous tissue has the advantage of greater simplicity. Some of the findings made on the adrenal medulla, e.g. the enzyme studies, …

On The Nature Of The Resting Frog Skin Potential, Priscilla M. Winn, Nancy S. Laprade, William R. Tolbert, Ernst G. Huf Jan 1966

On The Nature Of The Resting Frog Skin Potential, Priscilla M. Winn, Nancy S. Laprade, William R. Tolbert, Ernst G. Huf

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In this paper some of the highlights of research on the nature of the resting frog skin potential have been presented. Reviewing a period of about 30 years, it was the intention to show that several key problems have been recognized by a number of investigators who, through their experimental work, have tried to find unequivocal solutions to such problems as follows: a) The number and location of electrogenic layers (barriers) within the rather complex epidermis. b) The characterization of these barriers in terms of specific permeability properties. c) The electrical response of the two sides of the skin to …

Virus Infections--What Of The Future?, Robert J. Huebner Jan 1966

Virus Infections--What Of The Future?, Robert J. Huebner

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The rate of progress in virus research today is so rapid that for many the present is the future. Consequently, in order to discuss the future in comprehensible fashion, I must talk about the present state of affairs--to discuss current knowledge which furnishes the basis for contemporary enormous interest in viruses. It is precisely those considerations which will furnish the springboard for future progress in understanding and controlling the effects of virus infections.

The Pathogenesis Of Atherosclerosis And Coronary Heart Disease, Joseph T. Doyle Jan 1966

The Pathogenesis Of Atherosclerosis And Coronary Heart Disease, Joseph T. Doyle

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Fifty-five percent of all deaths in the United States are ascribed to cardiovascular disease. The vast majority of these deaths are due directly or indirectly to atherosclerosis and its ischemic complications (Am. Heart Assoc., 1965; U.S. President's Commission on Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke, 1964). Atherosclerosis is defined in Dorland's dictionary (24th edition) as "a lesion of large and medium-sized arteries with deposits in the intima of yellowish plaques containing cholesterol, lipoid material and lipophages." Typical atherosclerotic lesions of the coronary arteries are shown in figure 1. Even a casual inspection of these lesions shows the incompleteness of this conventional …

Some Malpractices In Medical Statistics, James S. Kilpatrick Jr. Jan 1966

Some Malpractices In Medical Statistics, James S. Kilpatrick Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Since it is now fashionable for papers in medical journals to contain statistical notations, it also follows that in a certain fraction of these the statistical content is wrongly applied. These malpractices may be classified as numerical, statistical, and methodological. To illustrate some of the most commonly occurring errors the following examples are given.

Effects Of Computers On Patient Care, Jay Goldman Jan 1966

Effects Of Computers On Patient Care, Jay Goldman

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In conclusion, the computer alone is not enough to provide the best possible patient care. Every hospital must be introspective about each patient-care system so that the performance aspects of the systems are meaningful and efficient. Couple the best methods of performance with the information processing and control capabilities offered by the computer, and one can envision a smoothly functioning patient-care complex in which the wild perturbations one sees in today's hospital operation are minimized. However, medical care finds itself in an awkward dichotomy. Many of the causes of system perturbation in the hospital are directly related to the demands …

The Synthesis Of 4-Spiro-2-Aryloxazolines Of Potential Pharmacological Interest, Paul Waddell Collins Jan 1966

The Synthesis Of 4-Spiro-2-Aryloxazolines Of Potential Pharmacological Interest, Paul Waddell Collins

Theses and Dissertations

Numerous and diverse physiological actions are found among 2-oxazoline compounds. No reports of the synthesis or biological testing of 4-spiro-2-aryl-2-oxazolines were found in the literature. On the basis of the known pharmacological activities of certain aza- and diazaspirans, it was felt that 4-spiro-2-aryl-2-oxazolines should possess medicinal activity. In particular, it was reasoned that the combination in a bicyclic spiro structure of the 2-oxazoline ring with rings systems commonly found in synthetic antitussive compounds might result in active antitussive agents.

The aim of this research was the synthesis of a series· of 2-aryl-2-oxazoline-4-spirocyclopentanes and a series of 1'-methyl-2-aryl-2-oxazoline-4-spiro-4’-piperidines. Six members were …
