Internal Control Of Cash In The Medical Office, William Mccormick Jr. Jan 1972

Internal Control Of Cash In The Medical Office, William Mccormick Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Most individuals have an aversion to a discussion of internal control because the need for such a safeguard stems from an aspect of human behavior we would prefer to ignore. Yet internal control is a small necessity for most organizations, large and small.

Fetal Abnormalities Of Metabolic Origin, Peter Mamunes Jan 1972

Fetal Abnormalities Of Metabolic Origin, Peter Mamunes

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The subject of my discussion is prenatal diagnosis of genetic disorders of a metabolic rather than a chromosomal nature. Whereas the chromosomal defects are the result of either the transmission of a translocated chromosome from a single parent to its offspring or an error in meiosis or mitosis, almost all metabolic disorders are inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion. Therefore, except in rare instances, the only clue to the possible presence of an inborn error of metabolism (IEM) in the fetus is that a previous child of the parents has had the disorder. This history identifies both mother and father …

Electronic Monitoring Of The Fetus, S. Edward Davis Iii Jan 1972

Electronic Monitoring Of The Fetus, S. Edward Davis Iii

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Although the fetal electrocardiograph (FECG), was recorded earlier in this century, utilization of the electrical activity of the heart for fetal assessment is really a procedure of approximately the last two decades. The fetal electrocardiograph obtained from the maternal abdomen can be used to detect fetal life, multiple pregnancies, and it can be extracted from the background noise by means of computer averaging techniques in order to study the electrical signal itself.

Psychological Abnormalities Of Sexual Identification, James L. Mathis Jan 1972

Psychological Abnormalities Of Sexual Identification, James L. Mathis

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The normal process of development of sexual identification slides almost unnoticed through well-defined, but overlapping stages to a definite end point. That end point is an individual who senses that his core gender, male or female, is consistent with the body morphology, the external genitalia, the chromosomal configuration, and the hormonal balance. Also, there must be the development of personality traits, masculine or feminine, consistent with the sense of core gender. Finally, although somewhat outside the scope of our present discussion, there must be the establishment of a role or life style in adulthood in accordance with the first two …

Uterine Blood Flow During Pregnancy, Frank C. Greiss Jr. Jan 1972

Uterine Blood Flow During Pregnancy, Frank C. Greiss Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Of these parameters pertinent to fetal well-being, the delivery of an adequate amount of blood to the placenta seems to be the most crucial. At our present state of understanding, uterine blood flow (UBF) appears to be that parameter most often affected by physiologic and pathologic conditions, and it is certainly that factor most readily altered, either favorably or unfavorably, by the physician. In this presentation, normal changes in UBF during pregnancy will be reviewed briefly, those factors influencing uterine and placental vascular dynamics will be discussed, and the clinical relevance of these observations will be illustrated on the background …

Placental Circulation, Elizabeth M. Ramsey Jan 1972

Placental Circulation, Elizabeth M. Ramsey

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

One of the most important developments of recent years in the field of uterine physiology has been the recognition that the endometrial changes occurring during the menstrual cycle and those associated with pregnancy are interlocking, sequential events in an ordered progressions from the first day of the cycle to parturition--and not separate phenomena as was formerly believed. No component of the endometrium illustrates this progression more strikingly than does the vasculature.

Femininity And Sexuality, Allan C. Barnes Jan 1972

Femininity And Sexuality, Allan C. Barnes

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In the second of the two McGuire Lectures, Dr. Barnes discussed the nature of femininity and sexuality. He began by pointing out that people usually turn first to the medical profession when seeking help in solving their sexual problems. Though some of these individual may require psychiatric care, most of them are simply misinformed and need to be reeducated. "We [physicians] need to consider their problems non-judgmentally and not let our own particular attitudes and views intrude too much," said Dr. Barnes.

Recent Developments In Anesthesia Malpractice, Jack B. Russell Jan 1972

Recent Developments In Anesthesia Malpractice, Jack B. Russell

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The topic "Recent Developments" is partially a misnomer because what I am going to address myself to is the recent trends or developments in three particular areas of the law as it affects the field of medicine, and then attempt to related these particularly to the field of anesthesiology. You must also understand that "recent" medically and "recent" legally may in fact be years apart. What are commonly referred to as recent legal theories, frequently find their origin in court decision several decades old. At the same time, some of what follows is of such recent vintage as to be …

Proper Use Of Mechanical Ventilators, James P. Baker Jan 1972

Proper Use Of Mechanical Ventilators, James P. Baker

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The proper use of mechanical ventilators is related to many problems; however, the primary one is the knowledge of the physician, nurse, inhalation therapist, and other paramedical personnel with a given ventilator. It is important to remember that there are certain inherent problem with all ventilators. These problem must be carefully searched for and avoided.

A Brighter Future: They Can Succeed, Ann H. Stewart, Shelby Dodd, Marsha Musser, Wilbur Reese Jan 1972

A Brighter Future: They Can Succeed, Ann H. Stewart, Shelby Dodd, Marsha Musser, Wilbur Reese

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Ever since the development of the Intelligence Quotient as measured in different ways, great controversy has raged about genetic causation for low IQ's. It is frequently stated that an Intelligence Quotient is only determinant of how the individual is operating at the time it is taken, but I find it almost impossible for this statement to be accepted by teachers and school systems. Mental retardation is said to make up 3% of our total population, 75% of which is the so called "familial retardation" with no demonstrable organic pathology. The children so labelled and referred to Special Education Classes are …

Progress Report 1972, Walter Draper Jan 1972

Progress Report 1972, Walter Draper

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In a facility which has as many varied activities and commitments as does the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, it would be impossible to give, in this limited space, a detailed account of a year's activities. However, I would like to point out a few landmark occurrences and some of the trends and directions in our continued growth and development as an institution.

The Behavioral Sciences And Juvenile Justice, Kermit V. Rooke Jan 1972

The Behavioral Sciences And Juvenile Justice, Kermit V. Rooke

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

I would like particularly to stress the role of the behavioral scientist in the effective operation of the Juvenile Court. Perhaps you are not entirely familiar with the modern Juvenile Court operation. Perhaps you regard it as a simple one-man operation in which the judge has only to look into his law books and there find the answers to all the problems which come his way. This, I assure you, is not the picture. Every day, every hour, the judge is confronted by problems which defy solution. The Court over which I preside has a physical plant which covers eleven …

Human Interaction In Teaching And Learning: A University Approach To Improvement, Douglas F. Powers, Howard L. Sparks Jan 1972

Human Interaction In Teaching And Learning: A University Approach To Improvement, Douglas F. Powers, Howard L. Sparks

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Public education, although beset with criticism from its inception, is in the midst of weathering its most severe storm. One need only note the newspaper headlines for a week to see the myriad of demands being placed upon the schools. On one hand, there is increased demand for productivity--what Talcott Parsons, in his book, The Social System, would call instrumental education (education for usefulness)--and on the other, there is the insistence upon strengthening humanism in teaching and learning--again drawing on Talcott Parsons--called expressive education (education for self-fulfillment) (1). It seems clear from the volumes being published that expressive education is …

Breaking The Boundary Of Separatism: The Challenge For Health And Welfare Service Providers, Joseph J. Bevilacqua

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

We can see in the first example a partnership between the training center and its constituent community. In the second, we see a full systemic cycle of need, its accommodations, or lack of such, and the recognition of these arrangements by those responsible for obtaining resources and directing their utilization.

Glaucoma And The Optic Nerve, H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr. Jan 1972

Glaucoma And The Optic Nerve, H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In summary, the anatomic characteristics of the optic nerve head have been described along the ophthalmoscopic interpretation of these characteristics. One hopes that this information combined with a knowledge of what constitutes glaucomatous abnormality in the optic disc will encourage the ophthalmic as well as non-ophthalmic practitioner to evaluate the optic nerve head and recognize those which are suspicious of glaucoma.

Primary Position Deviation In Duane's Syndrome, Guy Y. Wong, Arthur Jampolsky, Alan B. Scott, Jean Young Jan 1972

Primary Position Deviation In Duane's Syndrome, Guy Y. Wong, Arthur Jampolsky, Alan B. Scott, Jean Young

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The diagnosis of an esotropic patient as having Duane's syndrome is not always clinically evident. There has been a paucity of attention directed to the size of the esodeviation in patients with this syndrome. The purpose of this paper is to point out the diagnostic significance of the size of the primary deviation in patients with, or suspected of having Duane's syndrome.

Treatment Of Hypertropia With Relaxing Conjugate Vertical Prisms, Marina P. Meyers Jan 1972

Treatment Of Hypertropia With Relaxing Conjugate Vertical Prisms, Marina P. Meyers

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Certain selected cases of hypertropia can be permanently corrected with identical prisms placed base up over each eye. A child was first successfully treated by this method more than 14 years ago, and the excellent long-term outcome in her case, as well as generally encouraging results in a series of over 100 subsequent patients, suggest that in suitable cases the double vertical prism may be a useful addition to the methods available for the treatment of hypertropia.

Opthalmic Teaching Problems: The Ayes Have It, Robert G. King Jr. Jan 1972

Opthalmic Teaching Problems: The Ayes Have It, Robert G. King Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The problems associated with the teaching of ophthalmology to medical students in today's university setting are by no means unique to ophthalmology. However, these problems are more severe in small departments such as ophthalmology and are more disruptive to the teaching process than similar problems in larger departments. The purpose of this paper is to identify some of the more important teaching problems and propose solutions to them.

Statement Regarding Magnificat, John Stanley Hilliard Jan 1972

Statement Regarding Magnificat, John Stanley Hilliard

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis statement presents an analysis and explanation of a music composition entitled: Magnificat. The full music score to the Magnificat may be found in the collection of the Music Department of the School of the Arts, Virginia Commonwealth University. The King James Version is the source for all of Biblical text. The presentation here of the text for the Magnificat corresponds to the manner it is introduced into the music score. Thus, the use of small case primarily to contrast those parts of the text of high volume intensity which are capitalized, and parallel text to show simultaneous reading.
