Managment Of Transient Brain Ischemia, Clark H. Millikan Jan 1976

Managment Of Transient Brain Ischemia, Clark H. Millikan

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Cerebrovascular disease is an exciting subject, so complex that we could devote 30 minutes to a discussion of aspirin, dipyridamole, and sulfinpyrazone and their potential actions in the prevention of thromboembolic events. A Classification and Outline of Cerebrovascular Disease II, published in the September-October 1975 issue of Stroke, depicts this complexity. The portion labeled “outline” describes some of the things summarized in this paper.

Recent Techniques In Cerebrospinal Fluid Examination, Vincent P. Calabrese Jan 1976

Recent Techniques In Cerebrospinal Fluid Examination, Vincent P. Calabrese

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The existence of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has been known since ancient times, but it was Cotugno who first described it in some detail in 1764. Quoting from his treatise, “In these experiments which I made on the bodies of nearly twenty adults, and which I repeated at different times, I could draw off freely from the hollow of the spine, four, or even sometimes five ounces of water: I commonly found it very clear in such subjects, though it sometimes inclined a little to a yellow color: but in fetus’ strangled in difficult labor, litte as it was, I …

Extracranial-Intracranial Vascular Shunt Procedures, Romas Sakalas Jan 1976

Extracranial-Intracranial Vascular Shunt Procedures, Romas Sakalas

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Cerebrovascular occlusive disease has been and continues to be a leading cause of death and disability throughout the world. In the United States there are about 400,000 new strokes each year. Some 90% of strokes are a result of vascular occlusion of the extracranial circulation. Surgical treatment of occlusive vascular diseases, principally carotid endarterectomy, has become an accepted method of treatment of a large number of patients. However, only about 70% of patients with cerebrovascular disease have surgically accessible lesions in the extracranial circulation. The remaining 30% are a result of intracranial occlusive disease which cannot at present be treated …

The Influence Of Population Knowledge And Concern On Acceptable Family Sizes And Expected Family Size, Nancy Ross Hugo Jan 1976

The Influence Of Population Knowledge And Concern On Acceptable Family Sizes And Expected Family Size, Nancy Ross Hugo

Theses and Dissertations

This study focused on the influence of population knowledge and population concern on acceptable family sizes and expected family size. Analysis of the responses of 212 students in Introductory Sociology classes to a questionnaire survey revealed that the greater the student's population knowledge, the greater the degree of concern over population growth. Furthermore, the study revealed a stronger relationship between general knowledge of population processes and population concern than between specific knowledge of population sizes and growth rates and population concern.

Analysis of the relationship between population concern and acceptable family sizes revealed that the greater the degree of concern …

Prostaglandin Synthesis In The Feline Adrenal Cortex, Suzanne Gale Laychock Jan 1976

Prostaglandin Synthesis In The Feline Adrenal Cortex, Suzanne Gale Laychock

Theses and Dissertations

Studies were carried out on the feline adrenal gland to ascertain the role of prostaglandins in the mechanism of action of ACTH. Using tritiated arachidonic acid as a prostaglandin (PG) precursor , it was demonstrated by column and thin layer chromatography techniques that isolated trypsinized adrenocortical cells possess an active PG synthetase capable of synthesizing radiolabeled PGE, PGF, and PGA/B-like substances. Concentrations of ACTH (125 - 250 μU) which stimulate steroidogenesis enhanced the conversion of radiolabeled arachidonic acid to PGE, PGF and the PGA/B products extracted from cortical cells and incubation media.

PG biosynthesis by isolated cortical cells was …

The Effects Of Chronic Anaerobic Infection On Atherosclerosis In Rabbits, Janet Smitheran Bissell Jan 1976

The Effects Of Chronic Anaerobic Infection On Atherosclerosis In Rabbits, Janet Smitheran Bissell

Theses and Dissertations

Arterial disease is virtually a universal entity in man. Some cultures, such as the African Bantus have very little in the way of vascular lesions, while in the United States and other industrialized nations atherosclerosis affects a large segment of the population. With this in mind it is not hard to understand why ischemia, or arteriosclerotic heart disease, is second only to cardiovascular diseases in general as the major cause of death in the United States (4, 42).

Ruffer (112) noted the presence of arterial lesions in Egyptian mummies dating back 3,400 years. The presence of atherosclerotic lesions has also …

Sexual Adjustment After Myocardial Infarction, Brenda Hove Long Jan 1976

Sexual Adjustment After Myocardial Infarction, Brenda Hove Long

Theses and Dissertations

"Cardiovascular diseases claim more American lives than all other causes of death combined,”1 as stated in the American Heart Association's Heart Facts 1975. In 1972, it was estimated that 1,036,560 individuals died of cardiovascular disease; 683,100 of these were attributable to acute myocardial infarction.2 In addition, an estimated 28,420,000 Americans have some type of cardiovascular disease at a cost of $20 billion annually.3 The figures ”bring home" a stalking reality; cardiovascular disease is epidemic in this country, the incidence and ramifications of which make it an ever-present threat to all Americans. The greatest threat is heart attack, …
