Diabetes In Children And Adolescents; Observations On Diabetic Microangiopathy, Elsa Proehl Paulsen
Diabetes In Children And Adolescents; Observations On Diabetic Microangiopathy, Elsa Proehl Paulsen
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
You may well wonder why I have combined a talk on diabetes in children and adolescents with one on diabetic microangiopathy when as pediatricians we rarely, if ever, see clinical evidence of the sequelae of vascular disease in our patients. If we see proteinuria in a child, we seek another cause. We may see young teenagers with a microaneurysm or a trace of protein, but we soon refer them to our internist friends who fall heir to the care of problems that doubtless have their beginning in childhood years. Pediatricians are, therefore, concerned about these problems and the adequacy of …
Association Of Cystic Medial Necrosis Of The Aorta And Undiagnosed Thyroiditis [Scripta Medica], William S. Wise, John R. Hain
Association Of Cystic Medial Necrosis Of The Aorta And Undiagnosed Thyroiditis [Scripta Medica], William S. Wise, John R. Hain
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
We have recently seen two patients with cystic medial necrosis of the aorta. The first patient died of a dissecting aneurysm of the thoracic aorta. At autopsy, classical Hashimoto’s thyroiditis was discovered. The second patient died of a rupture of the ascending aorta. At autopsy, chronic thyroiditis was seen with multiple large germinal center and diffuse fibrosis. Neither patient was clinically suspected of thyroid dysfunction although the second patient had had a partial thyroidectomy in the remote past.
A Diagnostic Approach To Acute Headache, Alan B. Grindal
A Diagnostic Approach To Acute Headache, Alan B. Grindal
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Headache is one of the most common symptomatic ailments encountered by the physician. According to one estimate, headache constitutes the major complaint in more than 50% of patients seen in office practice. This figure refers to patients with chronic recurring headache, many of whom are seen electively when they are asymptomatic, and may not accurately reflect the frequency with which patients present, during the acute phase, complaining of head pain. The term acute headache refers to those episodes of cephalgia which lead the patient to seek immediate medical care.

Coma In Infancy And Childhood, Edwin C. Myer
Coma In Infancy And Childhood, Edwin C. Myer
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Coma is defined as an altered state of consciousness from which arousal due to appropriate stimuli is not adequately achieved. Such a definition of the state of coma is plagued with semantic problems, and terminology describing various comatose states is vast and even more ambiguous when applied to the infant. Rather than using such terms as coma, semicoma, stupor, or obtundation, it is better to describe the physical state of the unresponsive patient. The description should include the patient’s appearance, movements either spontaneous or elicited from stimuli, the patient’s response to the stimulus, and the nature of the stimulus, whether …
Acute Seizure Problems, Cary Suter
Acute Seizure Problems, Cary Suter
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Seizures are a symptom and not a disease. A seizure is the result of an abnormal electrical discharge of a collection or group of living but damaged or abnormal neurons. When the group of neurons is in the cerebral cortex, a focal or partial seizure occurs, producing abnormal activity related to that part of the brain. The victim may experience a focal jerking or focal numbness, or flashing lights if the lesion is in the occipital lobe; or he or she may be subject to peculiar automatic behavior if the lesion is in the temporal lobe. When the activity spreads …
Bacterial Meningitis: Some Epidemiologic And Clinical Factors In Diagnosis, Vincent P. Calabrese
Bacterial Meningitis: Some Epidemiologic And Clinical Factors In Diagnosis, Vincent P. Calabrese
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In ancient times all acute delirium states were known as “phrenesis.” It was not until the 17th century that inflammations of the meninges and cerebrum were differentiated from each other. By the 19th century meningitis had been described to the extent that a number of epidemics were reported both in the United State and Europe, but it was the development of the lumbar puncture by Quincke in 1893 which opened up a new diagnostic era for the disease.

Juvenile Hyperlipemia, William W. Miller
Juvenile Hyperlipemia, William W. Miller
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Asymptomatic hyperlipemia occurs in a significant number of American children. It is important to recognize the condition during childhood because of its role as a risk factor in the early onset of coronary artery disease and because early dietary modification may prevent changes leading to premature heart disease.

Genetic Studies Of Deafness And Of Retinitis Pigmentosa, Joann A. Boughman, Frederick R. Bieber, Walter E. Nance
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In experimental animals where the generation time is short and matings can be controlled experimentally, it is a relatively simple task to determine whether a trait is genetic, how it is inherited, and where the causal gene pair is located. However, in human genetics, inferences must be drawn by pooling observations on many small families in which the trait of interest has occurred. The condition may be etiologically heterogeneous, resulting from environmental causes in some families and showing variable patterns of inheritance in others. Hereditary deafness and retinitis pigmentosa (RP) provide instructive examples of the problems involved in the genetic …
The Genetic And Environmental Effects On Diabetes In Humans And Animals: An Overview, Roger M. Loria, Linda A. Corey
The Genetic And Environmental Effects On Diabetes In Humans And Animals: An Overview, Roger M. Loria, Linda A. Corey
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Despite intense scrutiny the precise etiology of diabetes mellitus remains unclear. There appear to be two major forms of diabetes: juvenile-onset or insulin-dependent diabetes, and late-onset or insulin-independent diabetes; the late-onset form, in itself, may be etiologically heterogeneous. Either form may occur at any age, with a clear distinction between the two often being difficult to make. Juvenile-onset diabetes, representing 5% to 10% of all cases, is characterized by abrupt onset, clinical manifestation of hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis, and generally by a requirement for exogenous insulin; in maturity-onset diabetes plasma levels of insulin are usually normal or elevated and the abnormality …

Interactions Of Ethanol And Methadone, Vijay Aggarwal
Interactions Of Ethanol And Methadone, Vijay Aggarwal
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of ethanol administration on the antinociceptive activity, lethal properties and brain concentration of methadone, were investigated. The effect of ethanol on the antinociceptive activity of methadone was assessed by the hot-plate and tail-flick tests. Concentrations of methadone in the brain were determined by the use of 3H-methadone as well as by gas liquid chromatographic analysis. The study showed that moderate doses of ethanol did not alter tail-flick or hot-plate response by themselves. However, when combined with methadone, ethanol produced a significant increase in the antinociceptive effectiveness of methadone as measured by both a decrease in the ED50 of …
A Study Of The Identification Of Medically Important Streptococci, Margaret Antoinette Hardy
A Study Of The Identification Of Medically Important Streptococci, Margaret Antoinette Hardy
Theses and Dissertations
Summary:
1. The type of animal blood used in preparing blood agar plates did not significantly affect the demonstration of hemolysis by any streptococcal species except for S.faecalis. S.faecalis more consistently displayed an alpha reaction on sheep blood agar while expressing a beta reaction on horse and rabbit blood agars.
2. A recommended scheme for identifying streptococci, adaptable to most any clinical laboratory, was developed and is outlined in Table 13.
3. S.agalactiae (group B) was the most frequent beta hemolytic streptococcal isolant. Significantly, it was the only species over-all to be recovered from every clinical source. The CAMP test …
Vcu Today (1976-12-08)
VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
