Porotic Hyperostosis In The Eastern Mediterranean, J. Lawrence Angel Jan 1978

Porotic Hyperostosis In The Eastern Mediterranean, J. Lawrence Angel

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Porotic hyperostosis is bone expansion caused by hypertrophy of blood-forming marrow. It usually affects the skull diploë in adults and the long bones, face, skull vault, and sometimes the trunk in children, often with some thinning and porosity in the cortex and even the formation of a double cortex (bone-in-bone) in severe infections. Excess formation of red cells in hematogenous marrow can come from sicklemia or thalassemia (especially in the homozygous form), from other hemolytic anemias including unusual blood defects like spherocytosis, and from iron deficiency anemia. Presumably hookworm, amebiasis and other dysenteries, endemic malaria, and even high-altitude anoxia can …

Paleoepidemiology Of Infectious Disease In The Dickson Mounds Population, John Lallo, George J. Armelagos, Jerome C. Rose Jan 1978

Paleoepidemiology Of Infectious Disease In The Dickson Mounds Population, John Lallo, George J. Armelagos, Jerome C. Rose

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The major focus of paleopathology has been the delimiting of disease in time and space. Information about the history of specific diseases is the objective of many of these studies. While the chronological and geographical dimensions of paleopathology contribute significantly to our knowledge of disease, there are limits to this approach, which often fails to consider the interaction of biology and culture in the disease of prehistoric populations.

Yawslike Disease Porcesses In A Louisiana Shell Mound Population, Louise M. Robbins Jan 1978

Yawslike Disease Porcesses In A Louisiana Shell Mound Population, Louise M. Robbins

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Human skeletal remains have been recovered from prehistoric and early historic sites in Louisiana with some degree of regularity for the past 75 years and on an irregular basis for the last 300 years. During his explorations of aboriginal sites throughout the Lower Mississippi River Valley, Moore made a special effort to collect skeletal specimens for shipment to the US National Museum at the Smithsonian Institution. A less well-known fact is that he also collected pathological specimens for shipment to the Army Medical Museum at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC. An unfortunate aspect of the Moore recovery technique, however, …

Paleoepidemiology Of Degerative Joint Disease, Robert D. Jurmain Jan 1978

Paleoepidemiology Of Degerative Joint Disease, Robert D. Jurmain

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In order to contribute significantly to the description and understanding of human disease, paleoepidemiology must first recognize requirements which epidemiologists have long considered essential: 1) that the populations sampled are relevant to a set of specific hypotheses concerning a particular set of diseases: 2) that an adequate sample is employed to accurately represent the whole population: and 3) that wherever possible, sex and age parameters are accurately controlled. Given a specific set of hypotheses worthy of being tested, paleoepidemiology can be used not only to describe the distribution of significant human diseases, but also to help untangle and explain their …

Management Of Carcinoma Of The Kidney And Urinary Bladder, Warren W. Koontz Jr. Jan 1978

Management Of Carcinoma Of The Kidney And Urinary Bladder, Warren W. Koontz Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Tumors of the upper urinary tract constitute 1% to 2% of all cancers, and each year 11,000 new cases are diagnosed in the United States. Approximately half of these patients have metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. Hypernephroma, or renal cell carcinoma, was first described in 1863 by Grawitz. These tumors arise from tubular epithelial cells and are correctly termed renal cell carcinoma or renal cell adenocarcinoma. There is evidence that further identifies the cell of origin as being from the proximal convoluted tubular epithelium. There does not appear to be a specific racial or ethnic incidence although it …

Adenocarcinoma Of The Prostate: The Rationale And Role For Radiotherapy In Its Management, Tapan A. Hazra Jan 1978

Adenocarcinoma Of The Prostate: The Rationale And Role For Radiotherapy In Its Management, Tapan A. Hazra

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Until recently the treatment of carcinoma of the prostate was limited either to radical prostatectomy by the perineal or retropubic route, or to hormonal manipulation. Approximately 5% of all patients with this disease are suitable candidates for radical surgery. Hormonal manipulation is palliative in nature and is generally used when there is evidence of metastatic disease (in about 50% of patients). There thus remains a group of patients (40% to 45%) in whom the disease is localized, yet too extensive for surgical treatment, for whom definitive radiotherapy can play a major role.

Management Of Acute Glomerulonephritis, Donald Oken Jan 1978

Management Of Acute Glomerulonephritis, Donald Oken

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Glomerulonephritis is responsible for over one half of all cases of end-stage chronic renal failure and, in its most fulminant form, is a cause of acute, irreversible renal failure. Electron microscopy and immunofluorescent studies together with newly recognized clinical associations have revealed a wide variety of histologic subgroups and myriad etiologies for what was once regarded as a single, simple entity. The addition of electron microscopy has lent an entirely new dimension to the delineation of glomerulonephritis subtypes and offers a more reasonable approach to the search for treatment of these subtypes. It is, after all, not unreasonable to suppose …

Male Infertility: The Clinical Aspects Of Evaluation And Management, J. William Mcroberts Jan 1978

Male Infertility: The Clinical Aspects Of Evaluation And Management, J. William Mcroberts

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

At a time when limiting family size has become of national interest, increasing numbers of married couples are moving in a different direction – to overcome infertility and conceive children. Reasonably reliable statistics indicate that approximately 3.5 million couples, or nearly 15% of those of childrearing age are subfertile. If one adds the cases of secondary infertility, in which a pregnancy or a miscarriage has already occurred in the marriage but is followed by years of difficulty conceiving another child, the magnitude of the infertility problem is indeed impressive. At the personal level, involuntary childless couples may suffer doubts about …

Respiratory Therapy Modalities In The Treatment Of Acute Respiratory Failure, James A. L. Mathers Jr. Jan 1978

Respiratory Therapy Modalities In The Treatment Of Acute Respiratory Failure, James A. L. Mathers Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Rapid advances have been made in the field of respiratory therapy in the past several years, resulting in an increasing sophistication and range of application. Properly applied, these modalities have led to significantly increased survival in patients with acute respiratory failure and a decreased morbidity among individuals with chronic pulmonary insufficiency. It is the purpose of this article to put into perspective respiratory therapy techniques and their application in the treatment of acute respiratory failure. To this end, we may divide respiratory therapy into five categories: 1) oxygen delivery, 2) airway hygiene, 3) expansion therapy (lung inflation), 4) artificial airways, …

Abstracts Of Papers Presented At The 6th Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies Jan 1978

Abstracts Of Papers Presented At The 6th Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Before developing programs to help minority women, program developers should assess themselves. White men usually create problems that cause minority women to need programs developed. White men who have had minimal social contact with minority women are not qualified to solve minority women's problems. White men ask white women and minority men to give assistance in solving minority women's problems. White women, who have been considered superior to minority women because of social, educational, or economical circumstances, are not qualified to solve minority women's problems. Minority men who have chauvinist values and do not have minority women's concerns at heart …

The Asian Woman In America, Gloria L. Kumagai Jan 1978

The Asian Woman In America, Gloria L. Kumagai

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Both females and males, regardless of their racial ethnic group, are seriously limited in their information about Asian women. Far too often the system educates individuals about race and sex as two distinct and separate categories. Consequently, Asian women, as well as other women of color, are viewed either as members of their ethnic group or their sexual group, and rarely as members of both groups simultaneously. This paper presents an overview of the historical context and the present-day status of Asian women in America as well as implications for education and change.

Early Sibling Relationships, Patricia Mccook Rager Jan 1978

Early Sibling Relationships, Patricia Mccook Rager

Theses and Dissertations

Most of the richness and beauty of life is derived from the close relationship that each individual has with a small number of other human beings--mother, father, brother, sister, husband, wife, son, daughter, and a small cadre of close friends. With each person in this small group, the individual has a uniquely close attachment or bond. Much of the joy and sorrow of life revolves around attachments or affectional relationships--making them, breaking them, preparing for them, and adjusting to their loss.

This study dealt with one of those special attachments, the relationship a child formed with his newborn brother or …

Educational Reform In Los Angeles And Its Effect Upon The Mexican Community, 1900-1930, Gilbert G. Gonzalez Jan 1978

Educational Reform In Los Angeles And Its Effect Upon The Mexican Community, 1900-1930, Gilbert G. Gonzalez

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The theme of equal educational opportunity was a major concern of the urban Chicano Movement in the late sixties. Chicanos accused the entire school system of racism and insensitivity towards the Chicano community. Schools, declared the activists, used institutionalized techniques such as intelligence tests and a tracking system to insure that disproportional numbers of Chicano children would be placed in vocational education courses or in classes for the mentally retarded.

A Historical Bulletin Of The Saint Philip School Of Nursing And Alumnae Jan 1978

A Historical Bulletin Of The Saint Philip School Of Nursing And Alumnae

VCU University History Books

During the first quarter of the twentieth century, when southern law and social practice demanded segregated facilities, the Medical College of Virginia established a separate school of nursing for African American women to provide trained personnel for the St. Philip Hospital. The Saint Philip School of Nursing opened with the hospital in the fall of 1920 and graduated 791 nurses during its 42-year history. The story of the school is told in A Historical Bulletin of the Saint Philip School of Nursing and Alumnae Association. It includes a general history, information on the curriculum, listing of the faculty, rosters of …

Direct Determination Of Pentachlorophenol By Differential Pulse Polarography, Albert L. Wade Jan 1978

Direct Determination Of Pentachlorophenol By Differential Pulse Polarography, Albert L. Wade

Theses and Dissertations

Concern over environmental contamination leading to the introduction of pentachlorophenol into human and animal systems has resulted in the need for a rapid and direct method for determining trace concentrations of this highly toxic compound. A direct electrochemical procedure has been developed for determining trace conccentrations of this phenol dovm to 0.27 ppm. This method uses the electrochemical techniques of differential pulse polarography at the dropping mercury electrode, and differential pulse voltammetry at the carbon paste electrode to reduce pentachlorophenol for this determination. Cyclic voltammetry at the hanging mercury drop electrode has been used to characterize the reaction behavior of …

The Ascription Of Mental Illness: Inside Societal Reaction, Kevin H. Ferguson Jan 1978

The Ascription Of Mental Illness: Inside Societal Reaction, Kevin H. Ferguson

Theses and Dissertations

Mental illness is examined as a classification of deviance and as a social process. The labeling perspective provides preliminary concepts and problems for research. The goal of research is the examination of the process of ascribing the label "mental illness" to individuals and their behavior by significant others prior to their contact with official and organizational agents of treatment and control.

An exploratory interview research design thin the Fan district of Richmond, Virginia was executed. Fifty residents were interviewed. Preliminary data suggest that the primarily white, female, well-educated, professional sample was unwilling to stereotype the mentally ill, and revealed typifications …

The Effect Of The Interviewer's Status Upon The Linguistic Style And Impact Messages Cenerated By The "Obsessive Personality", Vincent B. Greenwood Jan 1978

The Effect Of The Interviewer's Status Upon The Linguistic Style And Impact Messages Cenerated By The "Obsessive Personality", Vincent B. Greenwood

Theses and Dissertations

The present study addressed some of the peripheral statements emanating from Kiesler’s (Kiesler, Bernstein & Anchin, 1976) core communications theory by examining (1) a specific component of the communication style of the obsessive personality, (2) the distinctive emotional engagements the obsessive personality elicits when interacting with others, and (3) a situational determinant that is hypothesized to trigger relatively intense expression of the obsessive’s self-defeating communication style, as well as a higher level of state anxiety.

Specifically, the study examined the effects of a high or low status interviewer upon one expressive measure of speech and upon relationship consequences for groups …
