Vcu Today (1988-02-24)
VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

CyanoNews
CyanoNews was a newsletter that served the cyanobacteriological community from 1985 to 2003, with content provided by readers (sort of a blog before there were blogs). The newsletter reported new findings from the lab, summaries of recent meetings (often provided by graduate students and post-docs entering the field), positions sought or available, life transitions, a compendium of recent cyanobacteria-related articles, and other items of interest to those who study cyanobacteria.

[Review Of] Barry T. Klein. Reference Encyclopedia Of The American Indian, Douglas Kachel
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
First published in 1967, this is an indispensable resource for information about the current Indian population and its affairs. The title may be misleading since information about the Canadian Indian population is also provided. It does not offer any chronological history of the North American Indian complete with pictures and maps, such as Carl Waldman's classical work, Atlas of the North American Indians, but instead provides a basic reference directory of current (1986) Indian activities, organizations, resources, and a "who's who" in the Indian culture.
The Co-Opting Of Ethnic Studies In The American University: A Critical View, Jesse M. Vazquez
The Co-Opting Of Ethnic Studies In The American University: A Critical View, Jesse M. Vazquez
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The birth of ethnic studies in the American university was accompanied by the politics and pedagogy of rage, pride, and mistrust for the then prevailing curricular academic structures and its tradition-bound, academically conservative gatekeepers. The campus take-overs, student demands, and confrontations were a common expression of the times, and concomitantly these were also shapers of the changing times. The presence or absence of ethnic minority faculty and students in our universities was and continues to be one of many indices by which we measure the willingness of this society to live up to its responsibility and promise to guarantee expanding …

Ethnic Studies In The Twenty-First Century: A Proposal, Charles C. Irby
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
If you will consider the dualistic thinking which undergirds Western philosophical tradition, then it comes as a surprise to no one that the periodization of history is based on white male experiences as the sum of western civilization, especially the glorification of war and the celebration of unbridled "raw-power." So, too, it is not surprising that Aristotelian logic and Cartesian metaphysics form the godhead for monocultural and unisexual education in U.S. society, which is at the least bisexual and multicultural. For a decade-and-a-half now, ethnic, minority, and women's studies proponents have suggested that their purposes for existence were to challenge …

Ethnic And Women's Studies: An Attempt At Educating The Academy, Lillian H. Jones
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
As I have written before in other places, the Ethnic and Women's Studies Department at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona is a unique academic department in its history, structure, and ultimately in its agenda. The fact that Ethnic and Women's Studies are combined in a setting where the two disciplines are more frequently suspicious if not hostile to each other is unusual and owes its partnership to the history of the university where it exists and to particular individuals who conceived it. This combination, while certainly subject to both political and philosophical criticism from a variety of voices and interests, …
Proliferation And Differentiation Of Mast Cell Progenitors, Daniel Lee Jarboe
Proliferation And Differentiation Of Mast Cell Progenitors, Daniel Lee Jarboe
Theses and Dissertations
We have identified a late, committed stage in the differentiation of the mast cell progenitor just prior to granulation. This mast cell-committed progenitor (MCCP) differs from the more primitive bone marrow mast cell progenitor in that it is able to proliferate and differentiate in the absence of interleukin-3 (IL-3) when cultured on a monolayer of embryonic skin or 3T3 fibroblasts. The MCCP can be harvested from the mesenteric lymph nodes of mice in their fourteenth day of infection with the rodent hookworm Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and can be cloned in a methylcellulose culture system by supplementing the cultures with fibroblast-conditioned medium …
Modeling The Determinants Of Hospital Mortality, Abdolmohsin S. Al-Haider
Modeling The Determinants Of Hospital Mortality, Abdolmohsin S. Al-Haider
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined hospital characteristics that affected the differential in hospital mortality, while controlling for the effect of community attributes. Analytical models for the determinants of hospital mortality were formulated and validated through an empirical examination of 243 hospitals that had higher or lower mortality rates than expected for Medicare beneficiaries. The dependent variable for this study was death rates for 1984 Medicare patients in united states hospitals released in 1986 by the Health Care Financing Administration.
Structural equation models that portray the causal relation between organizational constructs and hospital mortality rate were formulated. This causal model was empirically validated. …

Henry Cheever Pratt: Boston Portrait Studio To Nineteenth Century American Frontier, Patricia B. Revere
Theses and Dissertations
American artist Henry Cheever Pratt (1803-1880) was a member of the 1851 Mexican Boundary Commission, an expedition charged with surveying and recording the boundary between the United States and Mexico. This thesis examines the art work Pratt produced for the Commission, and addresses the issue of the omission of most of his work from the Personal Narrative of Explorations and Incidents in Texas, New Mexico, Sonora, and Chihuahua 1850-1853, the official published record of the trip.

Abstracts From The Sixteenth Annual Conference, 1988. "Ethnicity; Race, Class, And Gender-Old And New Perspectives"
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The following abstracts were submitted for presentation at the annual Conference, and the respondent comments reflect the direction of discussion at several of the sessions. The intersection of race, class, and gender was the primary focus of the Conference. Caryn Mctighe Musil, National Director of the National Women's Studies Association ; Betty Schmitz, Research Associate for the Northwest Center for Research on Women in the Curriculum; and Paul Lauter, director of the Reconstructing American Literature project spoke at the General Session, refining the Conference theme and providing specific plans for action. Pearl Primus and her son Onwin Borde presented "Dance …
