VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. Facilitation Of Penicillin Haptenation To Serum Proteins., Joseph T. Dipiro, N. Franklin Adkinson Jr., Robert G. Hamilton Jan 1993

Facilitation Of Penicillin Haptenation To Serum Proteins., Joseph T. Dipiro, N. Franklin Adkinson Jr., Robert G. Hamilton

Publications from the Office of the Dean

Traditionally, penicillin binding to serum proteins was believed to be a passive chemical process; however, it appears to be facilitated by serum factors. The objectives of this in vitro investigation were to examine facilitated penicillin haptenation, to study the kinetics of haptenation, and to determine the nature of haptenation-facilitating factors. The model involved addition of [3H]benzylpenicillin to serum or albumin solutions (at pH 7.3 to 7.4) and incubation at 37 degrees C for up to 72 h. The extent of penicillin binding to proteins in serum was found to be four- to fivefold higher than with solutions having comparable concentrations …

In Vitro Protein Binding Of Cefonicid And Cefuroxime In Adult And Neonatal Sera., John M. Benson, F. Douglas Boudinot, Andrew T. Pennell, Francesca E. Cunningham, Joseph T. Dipiro Jan 1993

In Vitro Protein Binding Of Cefonicid And Cefuroxime In Adult And Neonatal Sera., John M. Benson, F. Douglas Boudinot, Andrew T. Pennell, Francesca E. Cunningham, Joseph T. Dipiro

Publications from the Office of the Dean

The levels of in vitro protein binding of cefonicid and cefuroxime in human adult and neonatal sera were compared.Binding parameters for each drug were determined within the concentration range of 25 to 3,000 micrograms/ml.Cefonicid exhibited concentration-dependent protein binding in both types of sera, with more extensive binding in adultserum at all concentrations. Two classes of binding sites were found: a high-affinity, saturable site and a low-affinity, nonspecific site. Cefuroxime also showed two-class, concentration-dependent protein binding in adult serum, but bindingin neonatal serum was to a single class and was independent of drug concentration. Parameters for class 1 binding sites for …

Cyanonews (Vol. 9, No. 2, July 1993), Jeff Elhai

CyanoNews

CyanoNews was a newsletter that served the cyanobacteriological community from 1985 to 2003, with content provided by readers (sort of a blog before there were blogs). The newsletter reported new findings from the lab, summaries of recent meetings (often provided by graduate students and post-docs entering the field), positions sought or available, life transitions, a compendium of recent cyanobacteria-related articles, and other items of interest to those who study cyanobacteria.

Review Essay: "Arthur M. Schlesinger's Vision Of America And The Multicultural Debate" By Jesse M. Vazquez, Jesse M. Vazquez

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In April of 1990, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., published an essay in the Wall Street Journal entitled "When Ethnic Studies are Un-American."[1] The publication of that article followed, by about eight months, the release of New York State's Department of Education's now controversial report -- "A Curriculum of Inclusion."[2] Interestingly, the publication of The Disuniting of America: Reflections on a Multicultural Society also follows, by about seven months, the release of New York State's second and most current Education Department report calling for the development of a new multicultural social studies curriculum -- One Nation, Many Peoples: A Declaration of …

Recognizing The Enemy: Rap Music In The Wake Of The Los Angeles Riots, Theresa A. Martinez Jan 1993

Recognizing The Enemy: Rap Music In The Wake Of The Los Angeles Riots, Theresa A. Martinez

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The May 1992 riots in Los Angeles demonstrated more than anything in recent history that the inner cities are filled with despair, hopelessness, and anger. Some feel that rap music is responsible for both gangs and the lawlessness unleashed by the riots. This paper will seek to address this notion by looking at the rap lyrics of artists who have been considered the most radical and the most angry. By examining rap lyrics we can detect anger and frustration in the ghetto. Rap music did not cause rioting in Los Angeles but it effectively heralded measures taken by inner-city residents …

Art Teaching For Peace And Justice, Kristin G. Congdon Jan 1993

Art Teaching For Peace And Justice, Kristin G. Congdon

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The social goals of peace and justice are not removed from art processes and products, and especially not from curricula in art classrooms. In this article, six topic areas are suggested for the art educator which further the causes of peace and justice: 1) Appreciating diversity; 2) Understanding that art creates individual and group identity; 3) Encouraging collaboration in art processes; 4) Working respectfully with the earth's ecosystems; 5) Analyzing art which deals specifically with war and violence; and 6) Promoting peace and justice through art.

[Review Of] Alejandro Portes And Ruben G. Rumbaut. Immigrant America: A Portrait, Janet E. Benson Jan 1993

[Review Of] Alejandro Portes And Ruben G. Rumbaut. Immigrant America: A Portrait, Janet E. Benson

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The subtitle of this book is apt. Its authors paint a rich and varied portrait of recent and turn-of-the-century immigrants to America: Vietnamese and Cuban refugees, Mexican, Chinese, Polish and Irish laborers, Indian professionals, Korean entrepreneurs. Unlike many works which focus on a particular nationality or type of immigrant, Portes and Rumbaut attempt a broad comparative sketch. The result is an enlightening synthesis of a very large literature. The authors discuss origins -- who the immigrants are and why they come; the context of exit, or conditions under which people leave home; issues of adaptation (economic, social, and psychological); and …

Institutionalized Discrimination In The Legal System: A Socio-Historical Approach, Michael Hodge, Kevin E. Early, Harry Gold Jan 1993

Institutionalized Discrimination In The Legal System: A Socio-Historical Approach, Michael Hodge, Kevin E. Early, Harry Gold

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Despite many of the social, political, and economic changes of the 1960s, discrimination is still prevalent in the United States. Increasingly, evidence of discrimination can be seen in our nation's courts, institutions of higher education, in public policy decisions, and every social, political and economic institution. The question of how this can be in these days of ethnic and cultural diversity has aroused considerable interest among social scientists, as well as among the general public. One area that has been the target of considerable research is the criminal justice system. Wilbanks[1] has suggested that it is a "myth" that the …

Age And Ethnic Variations In Attitudes Towards Older Persons, Family And Filial Obligations, Suzanne T. Ortega, John Shafer Jan 1993

Age And Ethnic Variations In Attitudes Towards Older Persons, Family And Filial Obligations, Suzanne T. Ortega, John Shafer

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Two major interpretations have been advanced to explain the frequent finding that ethnic elders have more extensive kin support networks than Anglo elders. Structural interpretations argue that the exigencies of poverty and ill health cause minorities to rely more heavily on family members for help than Anglos, whereas cultural explanations rest upon presumed differences in family values and attitudes. Despite the prominence of these two explanations, direct tests of the cultural model are rare. In this study, we use data from a study of 100 African, Mexican, Vietnamese, European, and Native American adults to test the hypothesis that there are …
