[Review Of] Harvey E. Goldberg, Ed. And Trans., The Book Of Mordechai: A Study Of The Jews Of Libya, Jonathan D. Sarna
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The Book of Mordechai: A Study of the Jews of Libya contains a translation of roughly half of Mordechai Hakohen's Highid Mordekhai, a Hebrew volume describing the history, customs and institutions of the Jews of Tripolitania, completed in Libya in the 1920s but first published by Harvey Goldberg in Jerusalem in 1978. For this English translation, Goldberg has rewritten and expanded his introduction so that it provides both historical background and biographical data on Hakohen. He has also appended a most valuable series of head notes and endnotes which both clarify and supplement the text.
[Review Of] Jack O. Waddell And Michael W. Everett, Eds, Drinking Behavior Among Southwestern Lndians: An Anthropological Perspective, Lyle Koehler
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In this compilation of eight essays, anthropologists Jack 0. Waddell and Michael Everett provide a generally refreshing way of looking at drinking behavior among the Papago, Pima, Yaqui, Taos Pueblo, Navajo, and White Mountain Apache of Arizona and New Mexico. The authors realize that much of what has been written about Native American alcohol use has come from an Anglo-Euro set of definitions which emphasizes the adoption of drinking behavior from whites, treating drinking without reference to Indian cultural differences and attributing it to some form of social dislocation caused by white intrusion and oppression.

Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The Potawatomi Indians (Prairie Band) of Kansas are portrayed in this film which has been some forty to fifty years in the making. The original footage was taken by Floyd A. Schultz, an amateur anthropologist, between 1930 and 1941. These scenes have been supplemented by historical still shots, maps, and other archival documents assembled from various sources in the 1960s and 1970s. During the summers of 1978 and 1979 Donald Stull, a professor of anthropology presently at the University of Kansas, conducted field interviews with some of the originally-photographed Potawatomi along with their friends and relatives. Portions of those interviews …
Towards A Model For Considering The Social Functions Of Art, Ronald W. Neperud
Towards A Model For Considering The Social Functions Of Art, Ronald W. Neperud
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The purpose of this paper is to suggest development of a model for examining the social functions of art with the goal that art educators might better understand and value that dimension of human activity. In recent decades individuality, self-expression, and creativity have reigned supreme to the neglect of other dimensions of art important to human welfare--functions important to maintaining the group. The more recent valuing of art of the culturally diverse and the importance of art to groups such as Blacks, Chicanos, and the elderly, and others has suggested that art educators need to understand how art functions in …

Art Education that is socially relevant and responsible is the shared goal that brought a group attending the 1979 National Art Education Association Convention to form the Caucus on Social Theory and Art Education. Since then the Caucus has expanded both its membership and its endeavors to focus the art education profession on the importance of critical socio-cultural understanding. This issue of the BULLETIN, our second, reflects the progress we have made. Twice the size of the inaugural issue, this BULLETIN includes twelve of the many papers on the Caucus Program at the 1981 NAEA Convention. The ideas and issues …
Some Symbols Of Identity Of Byzantine Catholics, Robert J. Skovira
Some Symbols Of Identity Of Byzantine Catholics, Robert J. Skovira
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
This essay is a description of some of an ethnic group’s symbols of identity”, its aim is to explore the meanings of the following statement: [Byzantine Catholics] are no longer an immigrant and ethnic group. Byzantine Catholics are American in every sense of the word, that the rite itself is American as opposed to foreign, and that both the rite and its adherents have become part and parcel of the American scene.”

[Review Of] Walter Dyke And Ruth Dyk, Eds., Left Handed: A Navajo Autobiography, Andrew Wiget
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
When Walter Dyk published Son of Old Man Hat in 1938, he introduced most of the world to a remarkable youth: Left Handed of the Bitahni clan, adopted son of Old Man Hat. That classic anthropological autobiography was the story of a child, born before his time, who grew to be a humorous, sensitive and observant young man. Left Handed dictated this story, which he concluded with his marriage, almost a half a century after most of the events had occurred. Following the Second World War, Dyk returned to the Navajo Reservation for the rest of the story and found …
Participant Observer As Critic, Robin R. Alexander
Participant Observer As Critic, Robin R. Alexander
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Participant observation is a term used to denote a group of research techniques which anthropologists, sociologists, other social scientists, and in this case, critics, use to collect data in natural settings. By critics, I mean educational critics who utilize the paradigm of aesthetic criticism in their evaluation of education situations. From the several appropriate techniques for gathering data for educational evaluations, many educational critics choose participant observation techniques. This paper centers on 1) the similarities and differences between critics' and other researchers' use of participant observation techniques and 2) the differences between their research products.
Why Art Education Lacks Social Relevance: A Contextual Analysis, Robert Bersson
Why Art Education Lacks Social Relevance: A Contextual Analysis, Robert Bersson
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Contemporary art education is individual - focused (i.e. self-centered) to the almost complete exclusion of larger social concerns. This is true whether the art education is child-centered, discipline-centered, Rockfeller (Coming to Our Senses) - centered, or competency-based. The primary concern, notwithstanding differences, is on individual artistic productivity and, to a lesser degree, on personal aesthetic response. The enormous untapped potential of art education - and ninety-nine percent of us will be viewers and consumers, not artists - is in the social dimension. Critical understanding of the dominant visual culture - often dehumanizing in its effect, multicultural understanding through art, and …
Vcu Today (1981-12-16)
VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The concepts of society and culture, so vital in the pursuit of understanding human behavior. its patterns and effects, are ultimately expressed in the lives of individuals. Cultural values are carried, symbolized, and integrated in the minds of human beings Innovative individuals challenge and change culture. The crucial intersection of society, culture, and individual has not always been granted sufficiently high priority in social science research to exploit this rich vein. As sociology and anthropology have moved toward quantitative methods, material is often fractured so that society seems peopled by disembodied fragmented men and women. This is regrettable since the …
