Implementing Successful Jail-Based Programming For Women: A Case Study Of Planning Parenting, Prison & Pups – Waiting To ‘Let The Dogs In’, Kimberly Collica-Cox, Gennifer Furst Feb 2019

Implementing Successful Jail-Based Programming For Women: A Case Study Of Planning Parenting, Prison & Pups – Waiting To ‘Let The Dogs In’, Kimberly Collica-Cox, Gennifer Furst

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

With 68% of prisoners recidivating within a three year period, designing and implementing innovative programming within the corrections setting is a necessity. The transient nature of the jail population begets difficulties for its successful implementation and maintenance. Since incarcerated females represent a smaller portion of the population, women, who face different challenges than their male counterparts, often receive less opportunity for programming, especially within the jail setting. Parenting, Prison & Pups (PPP), a program which weaves together an evidence-based parenting curriculum, integrated with the use of Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), serves as a model for how to implement innovative programming …

Targeting Intracellular Calcium Stores Alleviates Neurological Morbidities In A Dfp-Based Rat Model Of Gulf War Illness, Laxmikant Deshpande, Edna Santos, Kristin Phillips, Robert Blair Jan 2019

Targeting Intracellular Calcium Stores Alleviates Neurological Morbidities In A Dfp-Based Rat Model Of Gulf War Illness, Laxmikant Deshpande, Edna Santos, Kristin Phillips, Robert Blair

Neurology Publications

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a chronic multi-symptom disorder afflicting the veterans of the First Gulf War, and includes neurological symptoms characterized by depression and memory deficits. Chronic exposure to organophosphates (OP) is considered a leading cause for GWI, yet its pathobiology is not fully understood. We recently observed chronic elevations in neuronal Ca2+ levels ([Ca2+]i) in an OP- diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DFP) based rat model for GWI. This study was aimed at identifying mechanisms underlying elevated [Ca2+]i in this DFP model and investigating whether their therapeutic targeting could improve GWI-like neurological morbidities. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (9-wks) were exposed to DFP …

Identifying Important Parameters In The Inflammatory Process With A Mathematical Model Of Immune Cell Influx And Macrophage Polarization, Marcella Torres, Jing Wang, Paul J. Yannie, Shobha Ghosh, Rebecca A. Segal, Angela M. Reynolds Jan 2019

Identifying Important Parameters In The Inflammatory Process With A Mathematical Model Of Immune Cell Influx And Macrophage Polarization, Marcella Torres, Jing Wang, Paul J. Yannie, Shobha Ghosh, Rebecca A. Segal, Angela M. Reynolds

Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Publications

In an inflammatory setting, macrophages can be polarized to an inflammatory M1 phenotype or to an anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype, as well as existing on a spectrum between these two extremes. Dysfunction of this phenotypic switch can result in a population imbalance that leads to chronic wounds or disease due to unresolved inflammation. Therapeutic interventions that target macrophages have therefore been proposed and implemented in diseases that feature chronic inflammation such as diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. We have developed a model for the sequential influx of immune cells in the peritoneal cavity in response to a bacterial stimulus that includes macrophage …

Glycosaminoglycans And Glycosaminoglycan Mimetics In Cancer And Inflammation, Shravan Morla Jan 2019

Glycosaminoglycans And Glycosaminoglycan Mimetics In Cancer And Inflammation, Shravan Morla

Medicinal Chemistry Publications

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are a class of biomolecules expressed virtually on all mammalian cells and usually covalently attached to proteins, forming proteoglycans. They are present not only on the cell surface, but also in the intracellular milieu and extracellular matrix. GAGs interact with multiple ligands, both soluble and insoluble, and modulate an important role in various physiological and pathological processes including cancer, bacterial and viral infections, inflammation, Alzheimer’s disease, and many more. Considering their involvement in multiple diseases, their use in the development of drugs has been of significant interest in both academia and industry. Many GAG-based drugs are being developed …

Uruguay Supporting Globalization And Access Through English Language Education Policy, Valeriana Colon Jan 2019

Uruguay Supporting Globalization And Access Through English Language Education Policy, Valeriana Colon

Teaching and Learning Publications

With a comparatively small population and a little over half the country’s population living in the capitol city (The World Factbook: Uruguay, 2019), connectivity internationally and access nationally are important to Uruguay. According to Uruguay’s Commission on Language Policy, English language legislation emerged from national demand to know English for global trade, technology, and academia (Administración Nacional de Educación Pública [ANEP], 2008). Public dialog often depicts the universalization of English as a highly valued commodity essential for student success (Canale, 2011). An example of this is the historic use of internationally recognized standardized exams as a means to gain international …

Pattern Project - Life Of A Dog, Aleks Bourke Jan 2019

Pattern Project - Life Of A Dog, Aleks Bourke

Pattern Project

The Pattern Project explores the process of developing visual patterns, intended for the built interior environment, through both hand and digital crafts. Inspirations evolve into pattern concepts that inform message and intention. The intended message then informs motif, color, density, composition, line, repetition, hierarchy, and texture. Drawing from history, designers assess the role of pattern within the built environment and its connection to architecture and building occupants. Traditional handcrafts have evolved and are now used in contemporary processes while new digital crafts have emerged as pattern-making tools. The patterns developed through the Pattern Project were produced to scale on paper …

Dna Methylation Associated With Postpartum Depressive Symptoms Overlaps Findings From A Genome-Wide Association Meta-Analysis Of Depression, Dana M. Lapato, Roxann Roberson-Nay, Robert M. Kirkpatrick, Bradley T. Webb, Timothy P. York, Patricia A. Kinser

Human and Molecular Genetics Publications

Background Perinatal depressive symptoms have been linked to adverse maternal and infant health outcomes. The etiology associated with perinatal depressive psychopathology is poorly understood, but accumulating evidence suggests that understanding inter-individual differences in DNA methylation (DNAm) patterning may provide insight regarding the genomic regions salient to the risk liability of perinatal depressive psychopathology.

Results Genome-wide DNAm was measured in maternal peripheral blood using the Infinium MethylationEPIC microarray. Ninety-two participants (46% African-American) had DNAm samples that passed all quality control metrics, and all participants were within 7 months of delivery. Linear models were constructed to identify differentially methylated sites and regions, …

Habitat‐Dependent Occupancy And Movement In A Migrant Songbird Highlights The Importance Of Mangroves And Forested Lagoons In Panama And Colombia, Lesley Bulluck, Elizabeth Ames, Nicholas Bayly, Jessie Reese, Cathy Viverette, James Wright, Angela Caguazango, Christopher Tonra Jan 2019

Habitat‐Dependent Occupancy And Movement In A Migrant Songbird Highlights The Importance Of Mangroves And Forested Lagoons In Panama And Colombia, Lesley Bulluck, Elizabeth Ames, Nicholas Bayly, Jessie Reese, Cathy Viverette, James Wright, Angela Caguazango, Christopher Tonra

Environmental Studies Publications

Climate change is predicted to impact tropical mangrove forests due to decreased rainfall, sea‐level rise, and increased seasonality of flooding. Such changes are likely to influence habitat quality for migratory songbirds occupying mangrove wetlands during the tropical dry season. Overwintering habitat quality is known to be associated with fitness in migratory songbirds, yet studies have focused primarily on territorial species. Little is known about the ecology of nonterritorial species that may display more complex movement patterns within and among habitats of differing quality. In this study, we assess within‐season survival and movement at two spatio‐temporal scales of a nonterritorial overwintering …

Interaction Of Seed Dispersal And Environmental Filtering Affects Woody Encroachment Patterns In Coastal Grassland, Natasha N. Woods, Benjamin L. Dows, Evan B. Goldstein, Laura J. Moore, Donald R. Young, Julie C. Zinnert Jan 2019

Interaction Of Seed Dispersal And Environmental Filtering Affects Woody Encroachment Patterns In Coastal Grassland, Natasha N. Woods, Benjamin L. Dows, Evan B. Goldstein, Laura J. Moore, Donald R. Young, Julie C. Zinnert

Biology Publications

Encroachment of woody plants into grasslands has occurred worldwide and includes coastal ecosystems. This conversion process is mediated by seed dispersal patterns, environmental filtering, and biotic interactions. As spatiotemporally heterogeneous, harsh environments, barrier islands present a unique set of challenges for dispersal and establishment. Environmental conditions act as filters on dispersed seeds, thereby influencing encroachment and distribution patterns. Seldom have patterns of propagule dispersal been considered in the context of woody encroachment. We quantified dispersal and post‐dispersal processes of an encroaching woody population of Morella cerifera relative to directional rate of encroachment and observed distribution patterns on an Atlantic coastal …

Applications Of Chemically Modified Nitrogen Doped Carbon, Zirconium Phosphate, Metal Organic Frameworks, And Functionalized Graphene Oxide Nanostructured Adsorbents In Water Treatment, Ayyob Mohammed A Bakry Jan 2019

Applications Of Chemically Modified Nitrogen Doped Carbon, Zirconium Phosphate, Metal Organic Frameworks, And Functionalized Graphene Oxide Nanostructured Adsorbents In Water Treatment, Ayyob Mohammed A Bakry

Theses and Dissertations

Water contaminations by many pollutants, especially heavy metals such as Pb(II), Hg(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), and Cr(VI) pose many public health and environmental concerns as reported in the list of hazardous substances compiled by the US Environmental Protection Agency due to their high toxicity, refractory degradation, and ease of entering food chain. Adsorption by chelating resins is proven to be the most effective method for the extraction of metal ions from polluted and wastewater. However, traditional absorbents such as activated carbon, activated alumina, clay, zeolite, etc., show limited adsorption abilities for these heavy metal ions. The major goal of this thesis …

Touched With All The Radiance That A Sudden Sun Discloses, Marie Fornaro Jan 2019

Touched With All The Radiance That A Sudden Sun Discloses, Marie Fornaro

Theses and Dissertations

The thread running through my work is a constant impulse to rend and repair; to make, unmake, and remake. This repetitive and circular approach allows me to confront the cyclical nature of gendered oppression. What does it mean to make something beautiful and then to dismantle it? How do we reckon with the pieces that remain? By deconstructing the beautiful and lovingly crafted objects that I spend hours making, I recenter “craft” as a verb rather than a noun, forcing myself and my audience to resist the comforting illusion of certainty.

I contextualize my piecework and quilting in a long …

Understanding Structure-Activity Relationship Of Synthetic Cathinones (Bath Salts) Utilizing Methylphenidate, Barkha J. Yadav Jan 2019

Understanding Structure-Activity Relationship Of Synthetic Cathinones (Bath Salts) Utilizing Methylphenidate, Barkha J. Yadav

Theses and Dissertations

Synthetic cathinones are stimulant drugs of abuse that act at monoamine transporters e.g. the dopamine transporter (DAT) as releasing agents or as reuptake inhibitors. More than >150 new synthetic cathinones have emerged on the clandestine market and have attracted considerable attention from the medical and law enforcement communities.

threo-Methylphenidate (tMP) is an FDA approved drug for the treatment of ADHD and narcolepsy, which also acts as a DAT reuptake inhibitor and is widely abused. tMP and synthetic cathinones share some structural similarities and extensive structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies on tMP have been conducted. However, much less is known about the …

Trauma Related Drinking To Cope: A Phenotypic And Molecular Genetic Investigation Of The Self-Medication Model, Sage E. Hawn Jan 2019

Trauma Related Drinking To Cope: A Phenotypic And Molecular Genetic Investigation Of The Self-Medication Model, Sage E. Hawn

Theses and Dissertations

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use problems (AUP) commonly co-occur, have shared latent genetic risk, and are associated with many negative public health outcomes. Via a self-medication framework, trauma-related drinking to cope (TRD), an unexplored construct to date, may help explain why these two disorders co-occur, thus serving as an essential target for treatment and prevention efforts. The present study aimed to create a novel measure of TRD and examine its psychometric properties, investigate its indirect influences on the association between PTSD and AUP, as well as explore its potential shared molecular genetic risk with PTSD in a genetically-informative …

Regorafenib Enhances Lethality Of Sildenafil And Curcumin In Colorectal Cancer Cells, Kervin Benjamin Owusu Jan 2019

Regorafenib Enhances Lethality Of Sildenafil And Curcumin In Colorectal Cancer Cells, Kervin Benjamin Owusu

Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, more than 130,000 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC) each year and an estimated 50,000 people will die from the disease. Standard of care (SOC) therapies for CRC combine multiple cytotoxic chemotherapeutic drugs. These combinations have varying degrees of effectiveness and can often result in significant patient morbidity. For second recurrence patients, the multi-kinase inhibitor, regorafenib, is an approved agent, but is often poorly tolerated at current doses. In the current study, we propose to develop therapeutic regime of combining agents with modest toxicity profiles: curcumin and sildenafil with regorafenib. Using clinically achievable enterohepatic …

Factors Influencing Parental Care And Home Range Size Of A Monomorphic Species, The Red-Headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes Erythrocephalus), L. Abigail Walter Jan 2019

Factors Influencing Parental Care And Home Range Size Of A Monomorphic Species, The Red-Headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes Erythrocephalus), L. Abigail Walter

Theses and Dissertations

Parental care in animals can be costly and is shared between both parents in many bird species. Not surprisingly, most studies of how parental care is shared between the sexes are in sexually dimorphic species, and much less in known about sexually monomorphic species where sex cannot be determined in the field. This has prevented a full understanding of parental care behaviors – which are intrinsically linked to fitness – in species such as the Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) that is experiencing population declines throughout much of its range. In this study we assessed whether Redheaded Woodpecker brooding time, nestling …

Role Of Glial Ccr5 In Mediating Hiv-1 Tat And Opiate Neurotoxicity And Behavioral Phenotype, Sarah Kim Jan 2019

Role Of Glial Ccr5 In Mediating Hiv-1 Tat And Opiate Neurotoxicity And Behavioral Phenotype, Sarah Kim

Theses and Dissertations

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) persists in certain CNS cell populations, despite peripheral control of the infection with modern antiretroviral therapy. Infected and/or activated cells release viral proteins, such as trans-activator of transcription (Tat) and various pro-inflammatory factors such as CCL5, creating a positive loop of neuro-inflammation. This serves as the basis for the resulting sublethal and lethal neuropathology that manifests as a spectrum of HIV-mediated CNS impairments, known as HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Opiates, which exist as an interlinked epidemic with HIV-1 infections, exacerbate these neurological effects through direct and indirect mechanisms that disrupt both glial and neuronal …

The Effects Of Long-Term Deafness On Density And Diameter Of Dendritic Spines On Pyramidal Neurons In The Dorsal Zone Of The Feline Auditory Cortex, Rachel J. Bauer Jan 2019

The Effects Of Long-Term Deafness On Density And Diameter Of Dendritic Spines On Pyramidal Neurons In The Dorsal Zone Of The Feline Auditory Cortex, Rachel J. Bauer

Theses and Dissertations

Neuroplasticity has been researched in many different ways, from the growing neonatal brain to neural responses to trauma and injury. According to recent research, neuroplasticity is also prevalent in the ability of the brain to repurpose areas that are not of use, like in the case of a loss of a sense. Specifically, behavioral studies have shown that deaf humans (Bavalier and Neville, 2002) and cats have increased visual ability, and that different areas of the auditory cortex enhance specific kinds of sight. One such behavioral test demonstrated that the dorsal zone (DZ) of the auditory cortex enhances sensitivity to …

The Evaluation Of An Android Permission Management System Based On Crowdsourcing, Pulkit Rustgi Jan 2019

The Evaluation Of An Android Permission Management System Based On Crowdsourcing, Pulkit Rustgi

Theses and Dissertations

Mobile and web application security, particularly concerning the area of data privacy, has received much attention from the public in recent years. Most applications are installed without disclosing full information to users and clearly stating what they have access to. This often raises concerns when users become aware of unnecessary information being collected or stored. Unfortunately, most users have little to no technical knowledge in regard to what permissions should be granted and can only rely on their intuition and past experiences to make relatively uninformed decisions. DroidNet, a crowdsource based Android recommendation tool and framework, is a proposed avenue …

BACKGROUND

Cardiac surgery patients have some of the highest reported incidence and prevalence of pressure injuries (PI). A growing subset of cardiac surgery include patients with end-stage heart failure who undergo ventricular assist device (VAD) or total artificial heart (TAH) surgery. The risk of PI and their natural history of development in this population are unknown and the specific risk factors for PI development remain unexplored.

OBJECTIVES

To perform a systematic review of the literature to identify the incidence and risk factors of PI development in patients undergoing VAD-TAH surgery and thereby inform study design and variables in an eight-year …

Using Lipidomics To Characterize The Inflammatory Mechanisms In Sepsis And Pre-Eclampsia, Daniel Stephenson Jan 2019

Using Lipidomics To Characterize The Inflammatory Mechanisms In Sepsis And Pre-Eclampsia, Daniel Stephenson

Theses and Dissertations

Lipidomics, a rapidly developing field of study, focuses on the classification and quantitation of lipid species. Lipidomics has emerged in the forefront of scientific research due to the key roles that lipids play in metabolism, cancer, and disease. Using mass spectrometry as a tool for analysis, understanding the role eicosanoids and sphingolipids play has advanced rapidly. Being able to observe these small molecules in vivo has led to better understanding of several lipid-driven mechanisms and identification of eicosanoid and sphingolipid biomarkers in neurodegenerative disease, cancer, sepsis, wound healing, and pre-eclampsia. In the studies herein, we developed targeted mass spectrometric methods …

Social Influences On Racial Identity, Perceived Social Support, And Mental Health Among Black College Students, Sultan A. Hubbard Jan 2019

Social Influences On Racial Identity, Perceived Social Support, And Mental Health Among Black College Students, Sultan A. Hubbard

Theses and Dissertations

The first goal for the study was to estimate trait effects and social influences for racial centrality, racial private regard, and racial public regard. The second was to estimate correlational relationships between racial identity, depression, and anxiety symptoms. The study used 110 Black university students (Mage=19.5,SD=4.13) from a southeastern American university. Restricted maximum likelihood estimation was conducted to estimate variance components for all constructs. Racial centrality, racial private regard, and racial public regard consisted of mostly trait effects, although reflecting substantial social influences. Correlational findings indicated that providers who evoked high racial centrality also evoked …

Glial Cell Mechanisms Regulate Alcohol Sedation In Drosophila Melanogaster, Kristen M. Lee Jan 2019

Glial Cell Mechanisms Regulate Alcohol Sedation In Drosophila Melanogaster, Kristen M. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 16 million people in America are diagnosed with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) but no efficacious medical treatments exist. Alcohol-related behaviors can be studied in model organisms, and changes in these behaviors can be correlated with either (i) a risk for alcohol dependence or (ii) a symptom/feature of AUD itself. Although AUD is a disease of the central nervous system, a majority of research has focused on the neuronal underpinnings, leaving glial contributions largely undescribed. We used Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) to identify genes whose expression in glia regulates alcohol sedation. Mammals and Drosophila have conserved behavioral responses to alcohol …

Hydrogen Sulfide Improves Aberrant Gastric Smooth Muscle Function In Duchenne Muscular Dysrophy Mice, Gurpreet Randhawa Jan 2019

Hydrogen Sulfide Improves Aberrant Gastric Smooth Muscle Function In Duchenne Muscular Dysrophy Mice, Gurpreet Randhawa

Theses and Dissertations

Deficiency of dystrophin, a cytoskeletal protein localized in the inner face of the plasma membrane in skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle, results in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Through its interactions with extracellular matrix and plasma membrane proteins, dystrophin plays a role in contraction and signal transduction. In DMD, gastrointestinal disorders such as gastric dilation and intestinal pseudo-obstruction resulting from altered motility have been reported. The role of dystrophin in the regulation of contractile protein expression and smooth muscle function, per se, is not known. Studies have suggested that inflammation contributes to the pathophysiology of DMD. Exogenous H2S had …

Evaluating Predixcan’S Ability To Predict Differential Expression Between Alcoholics And Non-Alcoholics, John E. Drake Jr Jan 2019

Evaluating Predixcan’S Ability To Predict Differential Expression Between Alcoholics And Non-Alcoholics, John E. Drake Jr

Theses and Dissertations

PrediXcan is a recent software for the imputation of gene expression from genotype data alone. Using an overlapping set of transcriptome datasets from postmortem brain tissues of donors with alcohol use disorder and neurotypical controls, which were generated by two different platforms (e.g., Arraystar and Affymetrix), and an additional unrelated transcriptome dataset from lung tissue, we sought to evaluate PrediXcan’s ability to impute gene expression and identify differentially expressed genes. From the Arraystar platform, 1.3% of matched genes between the measured and imputed expression had a Pearson correlation ≥ 0.5. Our attempt to replicate this finding using the expression data …

Antinociceptive Tolerance To Morphine Is Driven By Colonic Inflammation And Mediated By Peripheral Opioid Receptors, Essie S. Komla Jan 2019

Antinociceptive Tolerance To Morphine Is Driven By Colonic Inflammation And Mediated By Peripheral Opioid Receptors, Essie S. Komla

Theses and Dissertations

Opioids are powerful analgesics. Despite their high efficacy for the management of moderate to severe pain, their clinical utility is limited due to the occurrence of adverse effects. The main problem associated with opioid use is the differential rate of tolerance development to the various pharmacological effects of opioids, with tolerance to respiratory depression occurring at a slower rate than analgesic and euphoric effects. The development of analgesic tolerance, where the efficacy of the drug progressively diminishes with repeated administration, requires higher doses of the drug to achieve a maximum effect. Reports have implicated inflammation as a major driver of …
