Recent Advances In Cancer Chemotherapy, Robert B. Diasio
Recent Advances In Cancer Chemotherapy, Robert B. Diasio
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The present state of cancer chemotherapy can be reviewed in light of selected basic principles with an acknowledgement of the role of established chemotherapeutic agents. Four chemotherapeutic agents recently approved for clinical use and their impact when used in combination regimens should be examined. Several important concepts influencing chemotherapy in the 1980s include the use of chemotherapy in the adjuvant setting, the use of hormonal receptor data in planning therapy, and the use of in vitro tests on tumor specimens to predict tumor sensitivity to cancer chemotherapy drugs (prior to administration of these potentially toxic drugs to a particular patient). …
Tapping The Tube, Sara Kaltreider
Tapping The Tube, Sara Kaltreider
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Before percussion and mediate auscultation were discovered, methods of physical examination – in particular chest examination – were limited. Only observation was used with any regularity. From the time of Hippocrates, palpation and direct auscultation had been used sporadically to detect heartbeats but had not proved to be of practical value because clinicopathological correlation had not yet been established. At last, when a new method called percussion was conceived by Auenbrugger in 1761, it was ignored for almost forty years. Not until the French School evolved did percussion become established, largely through Corvisart, Napoleon’s private physician. Coincident with the revival …

God's Silence And The Shrill Of Ethnicity In The Chicano Novel, Joe E. Rodriquez
God's Silence And The Shrill Of Ethnicity In The Chicano Novel, Joe E. Rodriquez
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Ethnic identity has to do with freely set of values, attitudes, and behavior from one’s cultural legacy in order to affirm a unique sense of peoplehood. In the United States ethnic groups such as the Chicano or Mexican American are often stigmatized, and the psychological burden of ethnic awareness can weigh heavily. Yet a healthy sense of ethnic identity is absolutely necessary for a positive self-concept when a person is part of a group that is slighted because of race or appearance. The question then is: how do Chicanos come to terms with their cultural tradition in a society that …
[Review Of] Robert L. Schuyler (Ed.), Archaeological Perspectives On Ethnicity In America: Afro-American And Asian American Culture History, Lyle Koehler
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Robert Schuyler, Associate Curator in charge of the American Historical Archaeology Section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum, believes that archaeologists have too often avoided working with Afro-American and Asian American sites and have not effectively used interdisciplinary sources to interpret patterns in the archaeological record. The fourteen articles in Archaeological Perspectives attempt to remedy such concerns but, perhaps in part because of the newness of this interest, the selections are of uneven quality.
The Relationship Between Type A Coronary-Prone Behavior Pattern, Achievement, And Life Satisfaction, Larraine A. Felland
The Relationship Between Type A Coronary-Prone Behavior Pattern, Achievement, And Life Satisfaction, Larraine A. Felland
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the relationship between Type A coronary-prone behavior pattern, academic achievement and life satisfaction. The subjects were 87 undergraduates selected for their extreme scores on the Jenkins Activity Survey, Form T. There were 41 Type As and 46 Type Bs. Along with the Jenkins Activity Survey, Form T the participants were administered a life satisfaction survey similar to Soper's (1979) and their official academic gradepoint average was obtained from the Academic Records office. A point-biserial correlation indicated that there was a significant (p
The various relationships and their possible explanations and indications were discussed in depth. Significance of …

Comparison Of The Behavioral Pharmacology Of Phencyclidine To Related Compounds, Kathleen T. Brady
Comparison Of The Behavioral Pharmacology Of Phencyclidine To Related Compounds, Kathleen T. Brady
Theses and Dissertations
Phencyclidine (PCP) belongs to a class of drugs with a unique and characteristic spectra of pharmacological activity. PCP has recently become a major drug of abuse. Structural analogues of PCP have also been reported in street use. The following experiments explore the behavioral pharmacology of PCP and several compounds with PCP-like activity.
In Experiment I the effects of PCP were compared to three structural analogues in rhesus monkeys trained to lever press on a fixed-interval 5 min schedule of food presentation. Dose-response curves and potency estimates were determined for PCP, N-ethyl-1-phenylcyclohexylamine (PCE), 1-(1-(2-thienyl) cyclohexyl) piperidine (TCP) and ketamine. The effects of …
Effects Of Glucocorticoid Treatment On The Properties Of Single Notor Units In Cat Hindlinb Huscles, Andrew James Robinson
Effects Of Glucocorticoid Treatment On The Properties Of Single Notor Units In Cat Hindlinb Huscles, Andrew James Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
The administration of glucocorticoids has been shown to induce atrophy and weakness in whole skeletal muscle. These effects frequently appear to be more pronounced in pale muscle than in red muscle. The present study was undertaken to examine the effects of steroid treatment on the contractile, electrical, and fatigue properties of single meter units in pale and red cat hindlimb muscles. Single motor units in the medial gastrocnemius (MG) and soleus muscles were isolated using techniques developed by McPhedran, et al., (1965). The properties of a large number of motor units were examined in normal animals and were compared to …
An Analysis Of The Effect Of Immediate Corrective Feedback Administered As A Study Aid To Undergraduate Medical Technology Students, Constance Anne Bak
An Analysis Of The Effect Of Immediate Corrective Feedback Administered As A Study Aid To Undergraduate Medical Technology Students, Constance Anne Bak
Theses and Dissertations
Twenty-six undergraduate medical technology students at Virginia Commonwealth University were provided with a Hemestasis Study Guide to use during this unit and in preparing for an exam in this area. The study guide contained fifty objective-related questions in multiple-choice format. Answers were printed in latent image and included positive reinforcement for correct selections and remediation for incorrect ones. Thus the student received immediate feedback concerning his response to each question.
An examination grade continuum was plotted for this class utilizing all exam grades in the Hematology course. A similar continuum was plotted for each of the three previous classes. (These …
Genetic Studies Of Questionnaire Data From A Residential School For The Deaf, Frederick Robert Bieber
Genetic Studies Of Questionnaire Data From A Residential School For The Deaf, Frederick Robert Bieber
Theses and Dissertations
A self-administered thirteen page Hearing Loss Questionnaire (HLQ) was designed in order to systematically collect medical and family history data on deaf children and their families. Data were collected from over 400 families with one or more children enrolled in September 1979 at the Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD). Almost 70% of the parents provided pedigree and family history information by completing the detailed HLQ. Computer analyses of the collected data allowed a thorough examination of almost 200 medical and family history variables, providing useful reference data on the MSD probands. Parental responses to a four-step rating scale of …
Solubilization And Partial Characterization Of An Activity Regulating Complement Activation From Membranes Of Raji And Tonsil Cells, Patricia L. Carlson
Solubilization And Partial Characterization Of An Activity Regulating Complement Activation From Membranes Of Raji And Tonsil Cells, Patricia L. Carlson
Theses and Dissertations
Complement is one of the major innate nonspecific mechanisms for host defense in serum. More than a dozen proteins have been isolated from serum which have a function in either the activation or regulation of complement action. Complement is similar to the coagulation sequence in that it comprises a number of precursor proenzymes in plasma that are sequentially cleaved to generate biologically and enzymatically active proteins.
Motivational Differences Between Depressed And Nondepressed Students In Detecting Noncontingency, Gerald D. Oster
Motivational Differences Between Depressed And Nondepressed Students In Detecting Noncontingency, Gerald D. Oster
Theses and Dissertations
The concept of learned helplessness assigns a mediating role to the recognition that events may be unrelated. However, current representation of individuals as "intuitive statisticians" unveils a lack of these information-processing abilities. This is particuIarIy apparent in the skill required to recognize noncontingent events. Similarly, in a series of experiments on the detection of contingent and noncontingent events, Allo and Abramson (1979) demonstrated that this “illusion of controI” couId discriminate between depressed and nondepressed students.
In extending their research, the concept of "contrast effects," on animal Iearning phenomenon, was introduced as a competing motivational framework to account for differences between …
The Role Of Retained Antigen As An Etiological Agent In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Patricia Liccardi Rice
The Role Of Retained Antigen As An Etiological Agent In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Patricia Liccardi Rice
Theses and Dissertations
The cause(s) of arthritis and many other connective tissue diseases are largely unknown. An infectious agent, either bacterial or viral, has not been unequivocally isolated. Theories on the pathogenesis of arthritis abound. Many of these theories implicate the immune system as the problem.
The early information on animal arthridites implicates retained bacterial cell wall antigens as the basis of the arthritis seen. How-ever, numerous types of antigens, both complex polymers and simple proteins, have been shown to persist in immune animals. The antigens persist in the lymph nodes and spleens playing a role in mediating antibody feedback mechanisms. Antigens also …
Components Of State Anxiety For Varying Levels And Dimensions Of Trait Anxiety, Dennis C. Donat
Components Of State Anxiety For Varying Levels And Dimensions Of Trait Anxiety, Dennis C. Donat
Theses and Dissertations
Recent research has provided support for a multidimensional view of trait anxiety to supplant the former unidimensional approach. Unidimensional measures of general trait anxiety have been found to be inadequate as predictors of state anxiety reactions across a wide variety of situations. As such, they are poor measures of general trait anxiety. The present investigation was conducted to examine the possible utility of a single anxiety trait score, summed from the subscales of the Stimulus - Response Inventory of General Trait Anxiety (S-R GTA), a multidimensional measure of trait anxiety, in supplementing the ability of individual subscale scores to predict …
The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Locus Of Control In Physically Abused Women, Betsy Wright Shires
The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Locus Of Control In Physically Abused Women, Betsy Wright Shires
Theses and Dissertations
History can provide some clues concerning the physical abuse of women by men. Beginning in biblical times, women were viewed as the property of men (Steinmetz, 1977). Until 1824 by law, a man was allowed to strike his wife if provoked (Bell, 1977). Under the law, some states still grant "spouse immunity" in cases of assault and battery, where married couples are involved. The focus of this research was to examine the problem of wife abuse through the perspective of social learning theory. Using Roy's theory of adaptation (Roy, 1976), the investigator also examined the area of self-concept as it related …

Vcu Today (1980-03-26)
VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Contemporary Sociological Theory And The Study Of Art Education, Nancy R. Johnson
Contemporary Sociological Theory And The Study Of Art Education, Nancy R. Johnson
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
These contemporary theories in sociology could be useful in the study of art education. All of them focus upon meanings, interpretations, social context, beliefs, and interaction. What is significant is how people describe life in the world. They also describe human beings as persons who have personalities that are unique and which are not entirely manifestations of physiological processes. Human beings are seen as initiators of action and as creative agents. These premises about human beings seem to me to be ones that validate art.
