Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging, Linda M. C. Abbott
Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging, Linda M. C. Abbott
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The standard academic presentation on the topic of power rarely alludes to the elderly, ethnic groups, or to females of any age or race. The cultural history of humankind has been one of gross inequities in the distribution of power, and much of this distributional variance has been attributable to the categories of race, gender, and age. When these categories overlap, the impact on individual access to power has been, and continues to be, the greatest.
The Effects Of War As A Basis To Consider Six Novels By Ernest Hemingway And F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nancy Weston Noel
The Effects Of War As A Basis To Consider Six Novels By Ernest Hemingway And F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nancy Weston Noel
Theses and Dissertations
Curiously, the issue of war has never been considered a solid basis for examining the works of Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Yet one common thread running through the body of their work is war. A study of the authors’ attitudes toward war and their characters’ responses to war in Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms (1929), For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), The Sun Also Rises (1926), and Fitzgerald’s This Side of Paradise (1920), The Great Gatsby (1925), and Tender Is the Night (1934), yields several conclusions. Hemingway’s and Fitzgerald’s works reveal two different types of human responses to …
Attitudes Of Three Urban Appalachian Teenagers Toward Selected Early Modern American Paintings, Bonnie Southwind
Attitudes Of Three Urban Appalachian Teenagers Toward Selected Early Modern American Paintings, Bonnie Southwind
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Three urban Appalachian teenagers were taken individually into an exhibit of early modern American art in the Cincinnati Art Museum. They were asked to choose one work that they wished to discuss. When the choice was made, they were asked to discuss the work, first freely and then directed by a set of questions. All three chose paintings in realistic styles that were of subjects familiar to them. Their discussions were limited by their level of training, but were otherwise perceptive and insightful. The act of choosing, the painting chosen, and the way it was discussed all seemed to both …

[Review Of] Stephen Glazier, Ed. Caribbean Ethnicity Re Visited, David M. Johnson
[Review Of] Stephen Glazier, Ed. Caribbean Ethnicity Re Visited, David M. Johnson
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Like marine life washed up on a beach, most Caribbean peoples have been brought where they are by powerful forces outside their control. These forces include colonialism, slavery, and revolution, processes in the seventeenth and eighteenth century that convulsed Europe and whose effects spread to much of the rest of the world. Just as tidepools a few feet apart can have completely different sets of animal and plant life, Caribbean islands just a few miles apart can have completely different histories and mixtures of peoples. Mirroring the complexity of the life in these tidepools, there are myriad interpretations of the …

[Review Of] Linda Hogan. Seeing Through The Sun, Victor Macaruso
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
A Chickasaw of mixed blood who grew up in Oklahoma and now lives in Minnesota, Linda Hogan writes spare poems pulled skin tight over the bones and blood and flesh they contain. She does not exploit her Native American experience to make poems; she does not need to. Her references to "the old sky woman," "black corn dolls," and "evicted grandmothers," who walk " wrapped in trade cloth," are integrated into the sense of life which fills her poems; yet the tensions which come from having inherited two distinct traditions are not ignored: In my left pocket a Chickasaw hand …
Degradation Of Human Anaphylatoxin C3a By Rat Peritoneal Mast Cells: A Role For The Secretory Granule Enzyme Chymase And Heparin Proteoglycan, James Edmund Gervasoni Jr
Degradation Of Human Anaphylatoxin C3a By Rat Peritoneal Mast Cells: A Role For The Secretory Granule Enzyme Chymase And Heparin Proteoglycan, James Edmund Gervasoni Jr
Theses and Dissertations
Purified human C3a was iodinated (125I-C3a) and used to study the interaction of labeled peptide with rat peritoneal mast cells (RMC). Cellular binding of 125I-C3a occurred within 30 sec, followed by a rapid dissociation from the cell. Both the binding of 125I-C3a and the rate of dissociation from the cell were temperature dependent. At 0°C, the binding of 125I-C3a was increased and the rate of dissociation reduced, as compared to 37°C. Once 125I-C3a was exposed to RMC, it lost the ability to rebind to a second batch of RMC. Analysis of the supernatants by …
Vcu Today (1985-12-11)
VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

The pharmacokinetics and protein binding of ceforanide were studied in 15 patients undergoing cholecystectomies. Each patient received ceforanide (20 mg/kg) intravenously on arrival in the operating room, after which serial blood samples were collected during the elimination phase for determination of total and free ceforanide concentrations in the serum. A high-pressure liquid chromatography assay was used, with a centrifugal filtration system for free-drug determinations. Serum concentration data for each individual were subjected to linear regression to determine the elimination rate constants (total and free drug), volumes of distribution, and systemic clearances. The mean elimination rate constants were 0.41 and 0.50 …
