Effects Of Hematocrit Variations On Microcirculatory Hemodynamics And Oxygen Transport In Hamster Striated Muscle, Lih Kuo
Theses and Dissertations
Experiments were performed to investigate the influence of isovolemic hemodilution and hemoconcentration on microcirculatory hemodynamics and oxygen transport in the hamster cheek pouch retractor muscle. Measurements of red blood cell velocity, microvessel hematocrit, vessel diameter, segment length (L), hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SO2) and longitudinal SO2 gradient (ΔSO2/L) were made in four arteriolar branching orders before and after isovolemic exchange with plasma (hemodilution) or packed red blood cells (hemoconcentration).
In the study of hemodilution, systemic hematocrit was reduced from 52 to 33% in 23 hamsters. This degree of hemodilution resulted in an average decrease in microcirculatory …
Sue Williamson: The Artist’S Struggle Toward Freedom In South Africa, Betty Laduke
Sue Williamson: The Artist’S Struggle Toward Freedom In South Africa, Betty Laduke
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
I first learned of Sue Williamson through an exhibit of her photo silk screen prints, A FEW SOUTH AFRICANS, sponsored by On the Wall Gallery in Medford, Oregon, in November, 1985. Combining visual and verbal elements, Williamson's seventeen portraits focused on black and white women and their ongoing, historical struggle against political injustice as experienced by South Africa's predominant black population. In February, 1986, I had the opportunity to interview Sue Williamson in New York City and learn how her personal development as an artist became linked with the expression of her political views, resulting in A FEW SOUTH AFRICANS. …

Enculturation And The Visual Arts Curriculum, Nancy R. Johnson
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
An overview of some theoretical viewpoints on enculturation is presented. These viewpoints are relevant to the development of the visual arts curriculum. The perspective presented is a critical one that calls for an examination of the cultural constructs in which art educations embedded.
[Review Of] Richard F. Fleck. Henry Thoreau And John Muir Among The Indians, Robert F. Sayre
[Review Of] Richard F. Fleck. Henry Thoreau And John Muir Among The Indians, Robert F. Sayre
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The idea behind this book, a comparative study of Henry David Thoreau's and John Muir's attitudes toward American Indians, is excellent. Muir, born in 1838, was twenty one years younger than Thoreau. He first read Walden and A Week at the University of Wisconsin in 1862, the year of Thoreau's death. His early writings, although not published until much later, contained generally pro-Indian sentiments similar to Thoreau's , while he also had a Thoreau-like squeamishness about Indians being dirty, lazy, superstitious, and demoralized by contact with whites. "Perhaps if I knew them better, I should like them better," he wrote …
An Assessment Of Pain Responses During Stages Of Pregnancy, Ann H. Dunbar
An Assessment Of Pain Responses During Stages Of Pregnancy, Ann H. Dunbar
Theses and Dissertations
As physical therapists are becoming more involved with the pregnant population both in traditional patient care as well as in childbirth education, a better understanding of the influence of pregnancy on the pain system is needed. The purpose of this study was to determine if an endogenous analgesia system is present in pregnant humans as has been shown to be present in animals (Ginzler, 1980). Women's affective and intensity responses were measured during late pregnancy, labor and post-partum. Using a repeated measures design, fifteen women responded to thermal stimuli (43-52 degrees C) by marking a visual analogue scale. No significant …

Development Of The Analytical Methodology For Pyrimethamine And Its Application To Studies Of Partitioning And Binding In The Subcompartments Of Blood, Anita C. Rudy
Theses and Dissertations
An original HPLC assay was developed for pyrimethamine (PYR) in plasma, RBCs, and buffer for the purpose of studying its plasma protein binding and RBC partitioning.
Equilibrium dialysis (ED) was used to study protein binding. Isotonic phosphate buffer used in ED did not prevent small volume shifts. The pH of the plasma affected the protein binding of PYR although it was not significant for the comparison of binding at pH 7.4 vs. 8.0. PYR at 1000 ng/ml averaged 93.1% bound to plasma proteins. Binding to pure human albumin was 86.5% at lower levels of albumin and PYR (350 ng/ml). There …
Nosocomial Respiratory Tract Infections Associated With The Use Of Ventilatory Support Systems: Epidemiological And Bacteriological Study Of The Effect Of Changing Breathing Circuits At 24 Or 48 Hours, Virginia Archer Lamb
Theses and Dissertations
Nosocomial (hospital-acquired) pneumonia (HAP) continues to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the hospital. HAP is the third most common nosocomial infection after urinary tract and surgical wound infections. In addition, HAP is the nosocomial infection with the highest mortality rate. These infections are often difficult to treat, because most are caused by Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) that may be highly resistant to antimicrobial agents. HAPs frequently occur in intensive care patients with underlying lung and/or systemic diseases. Many patients are intubated and are on assisted ventilation. Several sources of infection associated with ventilators or respirators have been …
Vcu Today (1986-10-29)
VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
