Vcu Today (1988-06-08)

VCU Today, 1972-1988

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Cyanonews (Vol. 4, No. 2, July 1988), Jeff Elhai Jan 1988

Cyanonews (Vol. 4, No. 2, July 1988), Jeff Elhai

CyanoNews

CyanoNews was a newsletter that served the cyanobacteriological community from 1985 to 2003, with content provided by readers (sort of a blog before there were blogs). The newsletter reported new findings from the lab, summaries of recent meetings (often provided by graduate students and post-docs entering the field), positions sought or available, life transitions, a compendium of recent cyanobacteria-related articles, and other items of interest to those who study cyanobacteria.

[Review Of] Vinson Brown. Native Americans Of The Pacific Coast, William Oandasan Jan 1988

[Review Of] Vinson Brown. Native Americans Of The Pacific Coast, William Oandasan

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In the introduction to Native Americans of the Pacific Coast, Vinson Brown presents many admirable ambitions for any scholar writing on human existence. Brown proclaims that he will attempt to make the first Americans "live" in the style of the 1500s to 1700s during the "days of old" and of "glory and independence." He then proceeds to assert that, in order to accomplish this goal, antiquated concepts used to "justify" the conquest of tribal Peoples must be "put aside." He urges us, "instead," to be inquisitive and open so that we can "see and hear" what indigenous life was like …

Art, Football And The Politics Of Recognition, Pete Helzer, Helen Liggett Jan 1988

Art, Football And The Politics Of Recognition, Pete Helzer, Helen Liggett

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Richard Brown, Professor of Art History at Pacific Lutheran University, recently published an article synoptically titled "Regionalism, a Tenacious Myth.” Most surprising was that it appeared in Signature, a low budget Northwest arts newspaper out of Seattle, Washington. The appeal of Signature is its plebeian accessibility: descriptive reviews, pragmatic advice on competitions, personality profiles, and an unpretentious gallery guide. For example, it is the perfect place to find the latest word on the Snohomish County Craft Guild. In the differentiation between theory and practice, Signature represented the voice of practice, that is, until Professor Brown's theory piece let down the …

Proliferation And Differentiation Of Mast Cell Progenitors, Daniel Lee Jarboe Jan 1988

Proliferation And Differentiation Of Mast Cell Progenitors, Daniel Lee Jarboe

Theses and Dissertations

We have identified a late, committed stage in the differentiation of the mast cell progenitor just prior to granulation. This mast cell-committed progenitor (MCCP) differs from the more primitive bone marrow mast cell progenitor in that it is able to proliferate and differentiate in the absence of interleukin-3 (IL-3) when cultured on a monolayer of embryonic skin or 3T3 fibroblasts. The MCCP can be harvested from the mesenteric lymph nodes of mice in their fourteenth day of infection with the rodent hookworm Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and can be cloned in a methylcellulose culture system by supplementing the cultures with fibroblast-conditioned medium …

Henry Cheever Pratt: Boston Portrait Studio To Nineteenth Century American Frontier, Patricia B. Revere

Theses and Dissertations

American artist Henry Cheever Pratt (1803-1880) was a member of the 1851 Mexican Boundary Commission, an expedition charged with surveying and recording the boundary between the United States and Mexico. This thesis examines the art work Pratt produced for the Commission, and addresses the issue of the omission of most of his work from the Personal Narrative of Explorations and Incidents in Texas, New Mexico, Sonora, and Chihuahua 1850-1853, the official published record of the trip.

The Interpretation Of Modern Art—What Is Possible When Dealing With The Explication Of Art, Heinrich Kupffer Jan 1988

The Interpretation Of Modern Art—What Is Possible When Dealing With The Explication Of Art, Heinrich Kupffer

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The attempt to interpret modern art comes from different approaches and moves along several lines of thought. Generally speaking, together these approaches leave no doubt that a linguistic explanation is possible and legitimate. This assumption, which forms a bridge between lord and picture, is a decisive, often uncontested problem of aesthetic logic. Spectators should watch out for the traps and fallacies. They may expect that the clear statement a work of art unambiguously makes for them, the unseemingly apparent interpretation of the work, leads back to a lack of understanding of the "real" thoughts and precise statement of the artistic …

Art Educators’ Responsibility To Cultural Diversity: Or “Where Are You Goin Wid Alla My Stuff?”, Kristen G. Congdon Jan 1988

Art Educators’ Responsibility To Cultural Diversity: Or “Where Are You Goin Wid Alla My Stuff?”, Kristen G. Congdon

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The responsibility of art educators to recognize and study the art and context of as many populations as possible is examined in this article. Examples of how artistic expressions have been borrowed, used in different contexts and otherwise removed from their original cultural context are given, and examples of ways that art teachers can help to recognize origins and the artistic functions of many cultures are suggested. By placing art in its context and studying it as it changes, students may begin to understand the artistic source, appreciate the importance of the creative context, and begin to see multi-cultural dimensions …

Understanding Popular Culture: The Uses And Abuses Of Fashion Advertising, Mary Stokrocki Jan 1988

Understanding Popular Culture: The Uses And Abuses Of Fashion Advertising, Mary Stokrocki

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Today's young people are bombarded by messages. They should be taught to evaluate what they hear, to understand how ideas are clarified or distorted, and to explore how the accuracy and reliability of an oral (visual) message can be tested (Boyer, 1983, p.92). Students are often manipulated by media messages and they are unaware of the uses and abuses of the media by advertisers. In many ways such manipulation makes students dependent on materialistic rewards, regardless of moral concern. As a remedy, Lanier (1966) advocates developing a critical consciousness, "an informed awareness of the social forces which oppress our lives." …

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

C.A. Bowers has proposed a perspective on educational theory and practice involving cultural literacy and communicative competence. Bowers' proposal addresses culture change through a critical examination of activities in the school curriculum. An overview of this perspective and its possible use in art education is presented.

The Effects Of Reading Ethnic Literature On The Attitudes Of Adolescents, Joan Wynne Sullivan Jan 1988

The Effects Of Reading Ethnic Literature On The Attitudes Of Adolescents, Joan Wynne Sullivan

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The first statement reflects one student's vision of her world and her solution to one problem in that world. Written in an essay which asked white students for their reactions to having Vietnamese in their school, the statement reveals a limited view of the world and possibly a parroting of community rhetoric. The second statement is an oral response by the same student taped during her reading of a novel which dealt with ethnic issues. Her revised perception indicating the need for a new look at other ethnic groups, rather than an expulsion of them from the country, suggests the …

Corticosteroid Effects And Senescence In Cultured Endothelium, Stephen A. Gudas Jan 1988

Corticosteroid Effects And Senescence In Cultured Endothelium, Stephen A. Gudas

Theses and Dissertations

Cultures of human umbilical vein endothelial cells were treated with heparin-corticosteroid combinations to determine effects on cellular growth. Standard proliferation assays, colony formation assays, and cytoflourometric analysis were the methods employed. Dexamethasone (DEX) and hydrocortisone (HC) were inhibitory to growth of HUVEC when EtOH was used as a solvent and fully supplemented medium (20% serum) was employed. When DMSO was the solvent, growth enhancement sometimes occurred when (DEX) was the test steroid; growth inhibition occurred with this steroid when a reduced (1%) serum component was used. Since significant inhibition of cell colony formation in response to DEX administration was observed, …

The Effect Of Man On The Landscape And The Effect Of Land On The Manscape: Or Contingent Plans For Knowing A Mountain, Taylor Scott Baldwin Jan 1988

The Effect Of Man On The Landscape And The Effect Of Land On The Manscape: Or Contingent Plans For Knowing A Mountain, Taylor Scott Baldwin

Theses and Dissertations

In my artistic practice, I emphasize personal and pan-cultural anxieties regarding civilization and the environment as an impetus for work in sculpture, video, and drawing. By locating marginal microcosmic subject matter that tellingly exhibits macrocosmic global dread, I seek to capture and distill our overwhelming eco-socio-political anxiety into a portrait of a society at a point in its history when the specter of nameless impending disaster weighs pressingly on the collective psyche. This thesis is supplementary to my work of sculpture in the Graduate School of the Arts Thesis Exhibition at the Anderson Gallery opening on April 27th, 2007. The …

Mechanisms Of Tolerance To The Effects Of Clozapine And Pimozide On A Multiple Fixed Interval 60-Second Fixed Ratio-30 Food Reinforcement Schedule In Rats, Heidi Freese Villanueva Jan 1988

Mechanisms Of Tolerance To The Effects Of Clozapine And Pimozide On A Multiple Fixed Interval 60-Second Fixed Ratio-30 Food Reinforcement Schedule In Rats, Heidi Freese Villanueva

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the behavioral and biochemical effects of two neuroleptic drugs. Clozapine (10 mg/kg), an atypical neuroleptic, and pimozide (1 mg/kg), a typical neuroleptic, were administered acutely, chronically (10 days), or in a behavioral tolerance paradigm (9 days of post-session administration followed by 10 days of presession administration) in order to assess the mechanisms of tolerance. Behavioral Effects were measured on a multiple FI 60-second FR-30 operant response schedule; HPLC was used to measure the biochemical effects of clozapine in the blood plasma, frontal cortex and striatum.

Presession administration of clozapine and pimozide both produced initial disruptions of response …

Glucocorticoid-Responsive Hepatic Cytochromes P-450 In The Rat: Multiplicity And Differential Regulation, Keith Alan Hostetler Jan 1988

Glucocorticoid-Responsive Hepatic Cytochromes P-450 In The Rat: Multiplicity And Differential Regulation, Keith Alan Hostetler

Theses and Dissertations

The multiplicity of glucocorticoid-responsive hepatic cytochromes P-450 in the rat was investigated by developing a series of monoclonal antibody probes directed against purified steroid-inducible isozymes from the rat (P-450p) and man (HLp). Two antibodies, termed 1G8 and 13-7-10, showed unique specificity for purified cytochromes P-450 upon immunoblot analyses. These antibodies were further characterized in terms of their reactivity toward proteins in liver microsomes from untreated and xenobiotic-treated rats. Three P-450p-related proteins were identified using 1G8 and 13-7-10 to monitor the expression of P-450p family subtypes. In untreated rats, members of this family exhibited sex-specific expression. Treatment with various chemicals resulted …
