Calculations Of Scattered Light From Rigid Polymers By Shifrin And Rayleigh-Debye Approximations, M. F. Bishop Jan 1989

Calculations Of Scattered Light From Rigid Polymers By Shifrin And Rayleigh-Debye Approximations, M. F. Bishop

Physics Publications

ABSTRACT

We show that the commonly used Rayleigh-Debye method for calculating light scattering can lead to significant errors when used for describing scattering from dilute solutions of long rigid polymers, errors that can be overcome by use of the easily applied Shifrin approximation. In order to show the extent of the discrepancies between the two methods, we have performed calculations at normal incidence both for polarized and unpolarized incident light with the scattering intensity determined as a function of polarization angle and of scattering angle, assuming that the incident light is in a spectral region where the absorption of hemoglobin …

A Pilgrim's Progress And Preface, Cliff Edwards Jan 1989

A Pilgrim's Progress And Preface, Cliff Edwards

World Studies Publications

Preface and chapter one of Cliff Edward's book, Van Gogh and God.

From the preface: "My purpose in this book is to help us move in the direction that sensitive art critics have pointed out, to enter the territory that theologians have generally ignored: the creative spiritual quest of Vincent van Gogh that he expressed in both word and image. It is my conclusion, after several years of investigation, that an understanding of van Gogh from the perspective of his spiritual search is a key to the unity of the artist's life and work, casting new light on many of …

[Review Of] Marina E. Espina. Filipinos In Louisiana, William Oandasan Jan 1989

[Review Of] Marina E. Espina. Filipinos In Louisiana, William Oandasan

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Marina E. Espina's Filipinos in Louisiana is her long awaited, first collection; it is also an announcement of her book on eighteenth-century Filipino settlement in Louisiana and the United States, Manilamen in the New World. The chapters of Filipinos in Louisiana are Espina's articles in chronological order covering two decades of research, all of which were published between 1976 and 1981 in Philippine News, New Orleans Ethnic Cultures and Perspectives on Ethnicity in New Orleans. Filipinos in Louisiana opens a little-known compartment in the history of the Filipino-American community. Espina, as a professional librarian, has had access to archival resources …

[Review Of] James S. Frideres, Ed. Multiculturalism And Intergroup Relations, Hartwig Isernhagen Jan 1989

[Review Of] James S. Frideres, Ed. Multiculturalism And Intergroup Relations, Hartwig Isernhagen

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

A volume of the policy and concept of multiculturalism is particularly welcome at a moment when the issue of minority vs. majority rights is once again flaring up in academics and politics. Canada is at the center of this discussion; but comparisons with the US (and Israel) are frequently made, and the US-American situation is explored at length in two essays by Rose. Also, the editor's introduction, though dealing explicitly only with Canada, raises basic issues of the ambivalent view of ethnic difference in liberal thought that transcend national boundaries.

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

A sociologist, Thornton has written a thorough and balanced demographic account of Native American societies in what became the United States from before the arrival of Europeans to the present.

[Review Of] Eduardo Galeano. Memory Of Fire: Genesis, Kathleen Danker Jan 1989

[Review Of] Eduardo Galeano. Memory Of Fire: Genesis, Kathleen Danker

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The first volume of a trilogy by the Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano, Memory of Fire: Genesis has been called remarkable, fascinating, vivid, passionate, angry, celebratory, and triumphant. It could also be called a history of Latin America to 1700, though that gives little sense of its style or scope. In his introduction, the author describes himself as "not a historian," but as "a writer who would like to contribute to the kidnapped memory of all America, but above all of Latin America, that despised and beloved land." To do this he has created a great mosaic of stories, most of …

[Review Of] Gary Soto. Lesser Evils: Ten Quartets, Carl R. Shirley Jan 1989

[Review Of] Gary Soto. Lesser Evils: Ten Quartets, Carl R. Shirley

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This volume continues in the same vein as Small Faces, but here the poetic voice is more mature, more reflective. There are forty autobiographical essays treating many of the subjects of Faces: Soto’s wife and daughter, his pets (both present and past), friendships, recollections of his childhood and teen years, sex, and the details of his everyday life. There are also two movie reviews and an account of the writing of a review of a bad novel. The essays are grouped in fours, but they are not presented chronologically, and thus can be read in any order. Each of the …

[Review Of] Vi Hilbert, Tr. And Ed. Haboo: Native American Stories From Puget Sound, James Ruppert Jan 1989

[Review Of] Vi Hilbert, Tr. And Ed. Haboo: Native American Stories From Puget Sound, James Ruppert

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Vi Hilbert, a Skagit Indian of the Northern Lushootseed of Western Washington, has collected and edited thirty-three fine examples of Salish oral literature. As an instructor in Lushootseed Salish language and literature at the University of Washington, she has had excellent opportunities to collect material and work out a presentational form in English. This volume collects stories from the Myth Age with special emphasis on Raven, Mink and Coyote stories. These stories, largely "light and humorous," explore the actions of beings with human and animal characteristics who existed before the world was transformed into the world we see today. Hilbert …

Direct Measurement Of Translingual Epithelial Nacl And Kcl Currents During The Chorda Tympani Taste Response, G. L. Heck, K. C. Persaud, J. A. Desimone Jan 1989

Direct Measurement Of Translingual Epithelial Nacl And Kcl Currents During The Chorda Tympani Taste Response, G. L. Heck, K. C. Persaud, J. A. Desimone

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

ABSTRACT

We have measured the NaCI or KCI currents under voltage clamp across the dorsal lingual epithelium of the rat and simultaneously the response of the taste nerves. Under short-circuit conditions a NaCI stimulus evoked an inward current (first current) that coincided with excitation of the chorda tympani. This was followed by a slower inward current (second current) that matched the kinetics of taste nerve adaptation. The peak first current and the coincident neural response satisfied the same saturating NaCI concentration dependence. Both first and second currents were partially blocked by amiloride as were the phasic and tonic components of …

[Review Of] Rene Maran. Batouala, Angelo Costanzo Jan 1989

[Review Of] Rene Maran. Batouala, Angelo Costanzo

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This book is a long-neglected product of the 1920s negritude movement, in which a new kind of primi ti vis tic in terest concerning the lives of black men and women in the African Diaspora took hold in the literary words of Europe and America. Batouala was written in French by Rene Maran, an Afro-Caribbean writer living in Paris in the 1920s, who had worked for several years in what was then known as French Equatorial Africa. This edition is a reprint of a 1972 English translation that adheres to the lyrical, sensuous style of Maran's prose and that follows …

American Medical And Intellectual Reaction To African Health Issues, 1850-1960: From Racialism To Cross-Cultural Medicine, David Mcbride Jan 1989

American Medical And Intellectual Reaction To African Health Issues, 1850-1960: From Racialism To Cross-Cultural Medicine, David Mcbride

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

During recent decades, social scientists, particularly anthropologists, sociologists and medical historians, have looked increasingly at how social and cultural factors inform a society's medical community and vice-versa. As Roger Cooter recently stated, "... medicine is a social phenomenon capable of being properly studied only when treated as a part of its social, political, economic and cultural totality."[1] In America, a steady flow of medical sociologists -- most notably Henry E. Sigerist in the 1940s, Talcott Parsons in the 1950s, David Mechanic in the 1960s and 1970s, and Vern and Bonnie Bullough in the 1980s -- contributed numerous empirical studies that …

Characterization Of Steroid-17,20-Desmolase And 20Α-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase From Clostridium Scindens, Amy Elizabeth Krafft Jan 1989

Characterization Of Steroid-17,20-Desmolase And 20Α-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase From Clostridium Scindens, Amy Elizabeth Krafft

Theses and Dissertations

Clostridium scindens is an obligate anaerobe isolated from the normal intestinal flora of man. It is the only bacterium known at present to synthesize both steroid-17,20-desmolase and 20α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (ZOα-HSDH). This study was undertaken to characterize these neutral steroid transforming reactions in extracts of C. scindens; to purify and characterize the enzymes responsible for side-chain cleavage and 20α- hydroxysteroid oxidoreduction and to clone the genes encoding these enzymes with a view towards studying the mechanism of induction by steroids in a prokaryotic system. Both enzymes were found to be co-inducible in cells cultured in the presence of 17α-hydroxysteroids. In cell …

Evaluation Of The Antagonism Of Nicotine By Mecamylamine And Pempidine In The Brain, Thomas Jeffrey Martin Jan 1989

Evaluation Of The Antagonism Of Nicotine By Mecamylamine And Pempidine In The Brain, Thomas Jeffrey Martin

Theses and Dissertations

Antagonists have been crucial in the characterization of nicotine's pharmacology. Initial evidence for the existence of central nicotinic receptors was based on the fact that nicotine produced a number of behavioral effects that were antagonized by ganglionic blockers that crossed the blood-brain barrier, such as mecamylamine and pempidine. Although the mechanism of action of these compounds has been studied extensively in the periphery, little is known about their mechanisms of action in the brain. These compounds are thought to be noncompetitive antagonists due to the fact that they do not compete for agonist binding to brain homogenate in vitro. However, …

Efficiency Of The Thermal Jacket On The Delivered Temperature Of Prewarmed Crystalloid Intravenous Fluid, Danny R. Bowen

Theses and Dissertations

A quasi-experimental research design was used to determine the relationship between the flow rate and the delivered temperature of prewarmed crystalloid intravenous solutions when using the Thermal Jacket™, an insulation device designed for intravenous fluid bags, as compared to a conventional blood warming apparatus. One control and three experimental groups were used.

Fluids in Group 1 (control group), Group 2, and Group 4 were prewarmed in a microwave oven to 41.45 ± 1.05 ° C. Fluids in Group 3 were left near ambient room temperature and measured at 22.05 ± 0.45 ° C. Fluids in the control group were infused …

Immunomodulators In Senescent Mice, Kevin R. Mccormick Jan 1989

Immunomodulators In Senescent Mice, Kevin R. Mccormick

Theses and Dissertations

The suppression of the immune response in senescent animals, including humans, is not complete and may be ameliorated by specific interventions. Previous studies have suggested that the replacement of thymus factors lost with age may rejuvenate senescent immune function. Similarly, exogenous growth hormone has been reported to improve senescent immune function in certain mammals. Other studies with the immunomodulator PSK claim to restore tumor-induced immunosuppression even in aged mice. This project investigated the abilities of thymus supernatant, ovine growth hormone, and PSK to rejuvenate different

parameters of the senescent immune response.

In the first series of experiments, erythroid depleted bone …
