Vcu Voice (1992-05-01)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Cyanonews (Vol. 8, No. 2, July 1992), Jeff Elhai

CyanoNews

CyanoNews was a newsletter that served the cyanobacteriological community from 1985 to 2003, with content provided by readers (sort of a blog before there were blogs). The newsletter reported new findings from the lab, summaries of recent meetings (often provided by graduate students and post-docs entering the field), positions sought or available, life transitions, a compendium of recent cyanobacteria-related articles, and other items of interest to those who study cyanobacteria.

[Review Of] Leslie Marmon Silko. Almanac Of The Dead, Cortland P. Auser Jan 1992

[Review Of] Leslie Marmon Silko. Almanac Of The Dead, Cortland P. Auser

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

For Leslie Marmon Silko aficionados, the "novel" may surprise them. Highly successful as a short story writer and the creator of the unusually spiritual novel Ceremony, Silko writes a tome, Dickensian in length and in the number of its dramatis personae.

[Review Of] Roy Harvey Pearce. Savagism And Civilization: A Study Of The Indian And The American Mind. Rev. Ed. Of The Savages Of America, D. C. Cole

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This classic volume on the image of the Indian in the American mind first appeared in 1953. Although both limited and incomplete, Pearce's work compelled a virtual revolution in literary and historical approaches to analysis of public view concerning the role of Indians in the American past.

[Review Of] Herman J. Viola And Carolyn Margolis, Eds. Seeds Of Change: A Quincentennial Commemoration, Cortland P. Auser

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

n this year of the quincentennial, Seeds of Change should be read by scholars, teachers, and students across the curricula and by those interested in multicultural interdisciplinary subjects of prime importance. The editors have done an outstanding job of bringing together essays by experts on the subjects related to "the massive changes since the contact of the Old and New World." One of the effects that a couple of the authors touch on and examine -- the gastronomic revolution -- was observed by German Aremiegas's America in Europe in 1975.

Sequence Specificity Of Teniposide-Induced Deletion And Insertion Mutations At The Aprt Locus Of Chinese Hamster Cells, Yi-Hong Han Jan 1992

Sequence Specificity Of Teniposide-Induced Deletion And Insertion Mutations At The Aprt Locus Of Chinese Hamster Cells, Yi-Hong Han

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies suggested that teniposide is a strong clastogen, and that the DNA breakage effect of this drug is mediated by the nuclear enzyme topoisomerase II. Ripley et al found evidence for a correspondence between sites of acridine-induced frameshift mutations in bacteriophage T4 and sites of in Vitro DNA cleavage by T4 topoisomerase II. To identify the sequence specificity of teniposide-induced deletion and insertion mutations in mammalian cells, the CHO-D422 cell line, which is hemizygous at the aprt locus, was employed in this study. Sixty-eight teniposide-induced and 42 spontaneous aprt mutants were analyzed at the DNA sequence level. Compared with …

Evidence That Nicotine Can Acutely Desensitize Central Nicotinic Cholinergic Receptors In Vivo, John Randolph James Jan 1992

Evidence That Nicotine Can Acutely Desensitize Central Nicotinic Cholinergic Receptors In Vivo, John Randolph James

Theses and Dissertations

Current concepts concerning nicotine's central nervous system (CNS) mechanism(s) of action suggest that this drug is producing its effects via an interaction at nicotiniccholinergic receptors (nAChRs) which open a membrane cation channel. Following initial opening of the channel, nicotine appears to induce a rapid desensitization of the nAChRs, closing the channel and resulting in a cessation of nicotine's effects. Research presented here will provide evidence of this secondary desensitization process in vivo by demonstrating nicotine's ability to induce acute tolerance in the discriminative stimulus (DS) paradigm. The ability of nicotine to elicit DS control of behavior was significantly reduced via …

Editorial Essay: Marginalia On Marginality And Diversity, Harold Pearse Jan 1992

Editorial Essay: Marginalia On Marginality And Diversity, Harold Pearse

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The 1992 NAEA Conference in Phoenix highlighted a series of sessions as "'A Celebration of Diversity," a kind of "'conference within a conference," Organized in response to Arizona's decision not to establish an official state holiday in honour of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, as an alternative to boycotting the convention, the forum provided art educators with an opportunity to explore how issues of diversity and marginality relate to our field. As could be expected, the relationships are diverse, involving not only racial, cultural and ethnic considerations, but also issues involving gender, disability, economics and class. Since …

Premises, Promises, And A Piece Of Pie: A Social Analysis Of Art In General Education, Tom Anderson Jan 1992

Premises, Promises, And A Piece Of Pie: A Social Analysis Of Art In General Education, Tom Anderson

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

It is argued that advocates of content-based art education and other art educators who are attempting to move art to the political center of general education are struggling against largely unrecognized social realities. The idea is developed that just as the art world occupies a marginal place in the larger society do does art education in the society's educational institutions. The roots of this marginalization are argued to be in contending; particularly the dearly held notions of creativity and originality which are at the heart of the art world, versus acquiescence and conformity which are held most dear within general …

An Art-Historical Paradigm For Investigating Native American Pictographs Of The Lower Pecos Region, Texas, John Antoine Labadie Jan 1992

An Art-Historical Paradigm For Investigating Native American Pictographs Of The Lower Pecos Region, Texas, John Antoine Labadie

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In the shadows of deep canyons in Southwest Texas and Northern Mexico, where the Pecos, Devils, and Rio Grande flow, are thousands of paintings on the walls of hundreds of rockshelters and overhangs. Archaeologists term such works "pictographic rock art." These particular pictographs were created over many centuries by Native American groups known collectively today as the Lower Pecos Region cultures.

[Review Of] Margot Edmonds And Ella E. Clark. Voices Of The Winds: Native American Legends, Cortland P. Auser Jan 1992

[Review Of] Margot Edmonds And Ella E. Clark. Voices Of The Winds: Native American Legends, Cortland P. Auser

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This anthology of Native American legends is a fine supplement to the Erdoes and Ortiz work, American Indian Myths and Legends. Whereas that work was structured around themes such as "Tales of Human Creation," "Tales of World Creation," etc., this work (while including very often the same themes) is organized regionally with tales from the Northwest, Southwest, Great Plains, Central Region, Southeast and Northeast.

[Review Of] Charles A. Eastman. Old Indian Days, Hartwig Isernhagen Jan 1992

[Review Of] Charles A. Eastman. Old Indian Days, Hartwig Isernhagen

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This book -- a major literary work by one of the more widely read early Native American authors, and an ethnographic "source" of some interest -- is now again available thanks to the University of Nebraska Press's efforts to reprint Native American classics. It comes with a very useful introduction by A. LaVonne Brown Ruoff, which establishes both historical and aesthetic contexts for Ohiyesa's stories. Ruoff provides information on the family backgrounds, the education, and the lives of both Mr. and Mrs. Eastman, gives an independent (and corrective) sketch of the 1862 Sioux uprising that forms the historical background of …

[Review Of] Elsie Clews Parsons. American Indian Life, Laurie Lisa Jan 1992

[Review Of] Elsie Clews Parsons. American Indian Life, Laurie Lisa

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In Joan Mark's introduction to the Bison edition of this classic work, she offers a good analysis of the impact of these twenty-seven fictional stories written by anthropologists and first published in 1922. Anthropology's radical change in methodology at the turn of the century -- of which Parsons and Franz Boas (twenty of these stories can be identified with Boasian anthropology) were noticeable figures in the transformation -- led Parsons to attempt to tackle the problem of the relation of the individual to the culture. Consequently, she asked her fellow anthropologists to write fictions about Native Americans in which they …

[Review Of] Kathleen Mullen Sands, Cd. Circle Of Motion: Arizona Anthology Of Contemporary American Indian Literature, Kristin Herzog

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The subtitle of this collection raises a question: Is it wise to mix various genres and also authors from very different tribes and then to limit this mixture by the arbitrary geographical borders of a state?

[Review Of] Jack Weatherford. Native Roots: How The Indians Enriched America, David M. Gradwohl Jan 1992

[Review Of] Jack Weatherford. Native Roots: How The Indians Enriched America, David M. Gradwohl

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This volume and Weatherford's penultimate book (Indian Givers: How the Indians of the Americas Transformed the World, New York: Fawcett Columbine, 1988) discuss in detail the contributions of Native American populations to the Old World and to the culture of the invaders who ultimately conquered the New World. Both books are timely in terms of the current hoopla concerning the quincentennial of Christopher Columbus's arrival on Caribbean shores. They both put the lie to the idea that acculturation is a one-way street. Native Roots additionally indicates the tenacity of many American Indian traditions in surviving centuries of attempts at forced …
