A Mountain Cultural Curriculum: Telling Our Story, Christine Bellengee Morris
A Mountain Cultural Curriculum: Telling Our Story, Christine Bellengee Morris
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Jim Wayne Miller, professor of English at Western Kentucky University, declared that school children in West Virginia have more exposure to other cultures than they do to their own. His concern was that, “Lack of knowledge about the area’s history helps perpetuate negative stereotypes about the region’s mountain people” (Associated Press, 1994). If the Mountain Culture, to which many of the students belong, is not reflected in the curriculum, their identity, voice, heritage, history, and arts are censored and the Mountain Cultural youth are rendered invisible in their own state. Results from a survey of three elementary schools located in …
Black Cowboys In The American West: A Historiographical Review, David Goldstein-Shirley
Black Cowboys In The American West: A Historiographical Review, David Goldstein-Shirley
Ethnic Studies Review
Few subjects in the ethnic experience of the United States are as fraught with mythology and misinformation as black cowboys. Although absent from most classic history texts of the American West, black cowboys probably constituted about a quarter of the working cowboys in the nineteenth century, although q uantitative data to establish a number are lacking. This essay reviews the historiography of black cowboys published during the last half-century, noting how much of it is marred either by glossing over the presence of black cowboys or by credulously repeating estimates of their numbers established by earlier work. The essay speculates …
Electrophysiological Effects Of Lysoplasmenylcholine On Rabbit Ventricular Myocytes, Ray Caldwell
Electrophysiological Effects Of Lysoplasmenylcholine On Rabbit Ventricular Myocytes, Ray Caldwell
Theses and Dissertations
Myocardial ischemia activates a phospholipase A2 that targets plasmalogen phospholipids and liberates 1-0-alkenyl-Iysoplasmenylcholine (LPLC) in preference to 1-0- acyl-Iysophosphatidylcholine (LPC). Although LPC is a pro arrhythmic ischemic metabolite, the effect of LPLC on cardiac electrophysiology is unknown. At the lowest doses investigated, LPLC induced spontaneous contractions in otherwise quiescent rabbit ventricular myocytes significantly faster than LPC. Spontaneous contractions developed with median times of 16.4 (n = 64), 27.4 (n = 36), and >60 min (n = 25) during exposure to 5, 2.5, and 1 JlM LPLC compared with 38.0 (n = 48) and >60 min (n = 29) for 5 …

The Seated Cleopatra In Nineteenth Century American Sculpture, Kelly J. Gotschalk
The Seated Cleopatra In Nineteenth Century American Sculpture, Kelly J. Gotschalk
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores Cleopatra as presented in the work of three nineteenth century American sculptors: Thomas Ridgeway Gould, Edmonia Lewis and William Wetmore Story. It illuminates their work in the context of the nineteenth century and within the history of Cleopatra's image. Victorian opinions of Cleopatra's nature are exposed by examining the Egyptian Queen in essays and literature of the period, including works by Anna Jameson, Emily Dickinson, Charlotte Bronte, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Theophile Gautier. By studying the role of Cleopatra in these literary examples, the notion of some recent scholars of Cleopatra as a feminist symbol is dispelled and …

Stem Cell Factor And Kit Expression In Type I Neurofibromatosis, Kenneth Eugene Roth
Stem Cell Factor And Kit Expression In Type I Neurofibromatosis, Kenneth Eugene Roth
Theses and Dissertations
Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an inherited disease characterized by the appearance of multiple neurofibromas and an increased incidence of malignant schwannomas, both of which contain hyperproliferative Schwann cells. Our laboratory previously reported that Schwann cells produce stem cell factor (SCF), a multi potential growth factor known to be involved in mast cell migration and growth. Given the fact that mast cell numbers are increased in both neurofibromas and malignant schwannomas, we set out to evaluate a potential role for SCF in the development of NF1 lesions. First we studied the effects of high doses of recombinant SCF on mast …
Estimation Of The Ld100p When P Is Small, Daniel Bettendorf
Estimation Of The Ld100p When P Is Small, Daniel Bettendorf
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis concerns the estimation of extreme quantiles on a dose-response curve. It focuses on the Robbins-Monro and up-and-down procedures. Simulation studies run in search of the LD15 and LD30 using a variety of methods suggest that the Robbins-Monro procedure is optimal in terms of Monte Carlo MSE and bias. The up-and-down procedure's performance differs in many cases only slightly from that of the Robbins-Monro process, therefore indicating its value as a practical alternative to the Robbins-Monro process for extreme-quantile estimation.
Tumor Immunity Following Adenovirus Mediated Herpes Simplex Thymidine Kinase Gene Transfer To Experimental Rat Gliomas, Maulik Raj Shah
Tumor Immunity Following Adenovirus Mediated Herpes Simplex Thymidine Kinase Gene Transfer To Experimental Rat Gliomas, Maulik Raj Shah
Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies have determined adenovirus mediated herpes simplex thymidine kinase gene transfer (AV-TK) to be effective for the treatment of experimental gliomas. In this study we report three distinct phenomenon. First, animals with complete regression of subcutaneous tumors upon intratumoral injections of AV-TK with concomitant Ganciclovir® (GCV) administration developed tumor immunity. These animals had the ability to reject a subsequent inoculum of lethal doses of tumor cells. This tumor immunity was long standing and protective as far as 6 months from the time of initial tumor ablation. Of interest, adoptive transfer of splenocytes from AV-TK treated-tumor ablated animals to naive …
The Vine (1996-12-11)
The Vine, 1994-2008
The Vine was a successor to Reflections in Ink, published from 1994 to 2008. It transitioned from a mostly African American student perspective to a multi-cultural one.

Vcu Voice (1996-11-11)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
