Vcu News (2002-01-16)
VCU News, 2001-2002
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Acoustic Competition In The Gulf Toadfish Opsanus Beta: Acoustic Tagging, Robert F. Thorson, Michael L. Fine
Biology Publications
Nesting male gulf toadfish Opsanus beta produce a boatwhistle advertisement call used in male–male competition and to attract females and an agonistic grunt call. The grunt is a short-duration pulsatile call, and the boatwhistle is a complex call typically consisting of zero to three introductory grunts, a long tonal boop note, and zero to three shorter boops. The beginning of the boop note is also gruntlike. Anomalous boatwhistles contain a short-duration grunt embedded in the tonal portion of the boop or between an introductory grunt and the boop. Embedded grunts have sound-pressure levels and frequency spectra that correspond with those …

A Collaborative Pre-Practicum Apprentice Program Gives A Community College A Jump-Start In Teacher Preparation, G. F. Childers
A Collaborative Pre-Practicum Apprentice Program Gives A Community College A Jump-Start In Teacher Preparation, G. F. Childers
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
The Virginia Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers (VCEPT), funded by a grant from the Division of Undergraduate Education of the National Science Foundation, implemented the VCEPT Pre-Practicum Apprentice Program a couple of years into the grant. Groups of colleges within the Collaborative were to work together to set up an experience for pre-service teachers at their colleges which emphasized mathematics, science, and technology and which gave the pre-service teachers some in-field experience observing instruction in the local schools with lead teachers in these disciplines. Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Virginia Union University (VUU), and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community …
Distance Education And Dementia Caregivers: A Comparison Of Three Methods, Mary Colleen Corrigan
Distance Education And Dementia Caregivers: A Comparison Of Three Methods, Mary Colleen Corrigan
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the research is to examine the family experience of dementia caregiving and design an educational intervention to assist family members in the caregiving role. Stress results when a caregiver confronts environmental demands (dementia behaviors) that threaten personal well-being. The perception of threat is the process of primary stress appraisal. Caregivers evaluate coping options, a process of secondary stress appraisal. Positive secondary appraisal (view the situation as amenable to change) has the potential to trigger re-appraisal of the primary threat, and to reduce overall stress.
Education is one way to affect secondary appraisal. Adult learners benefit from progressive …

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This year's journal finds many of its authors in a reflective moment affected by the still radiating and lingering pulsating light of 9/11. The journal pays respect to the tragedy of that event and the suffering that ensued through its cover design. As caucus members, we acknowledge the magnitude of the event in the way that our lives have been affected by the many horrific images that remain forever embedded as part of America's cultural memory. Besides my own mediation on the imagery of 9/11 from a Lacanian and Deleuzean perspective ("The Last Shard Standing"), Jim Edwards in, "Tagging a …
